The episode opens with distant a view of Katolis Castle, then lowers towards the forest to show Runaan and Callisto crouching on the branch of a tree, gazing upon the castle.
Runaan They'll be on the lookout for us now.
Callisto Five of us won't be enough. We need all six.
Runaan We will be stronger as five.
Callisto looks back down to the assassin camp, where the remaining elves tend to their weapons to prepare them for their mission. Rayla examines her blade with an unsure expression, then turns towards Andromeda, who is currently pouring poison over her own knife. Because Andromeda glares back at Rayla, she decides to address Skor instead, who is sharpening his sword on top of a rock.
Rayla Hey, could I borrow your sharpening thingie?
Skor Whetstone.
Rayla Yeah, that.
Skor No.
Rayla turns away from the group and leaves her head hanging when Runaan and Callisto jump off the tree and approach her.
Runaan Come with me.
Rayla furrows her eyebrows in worry and puts away her blade, then follows Runaan with a sense of shame in her body language and expression.
Scene Change
Back in Katolis castle, Callum leans against the door to Ezran's room he had previously stormed off through.
Callum Ezran, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said what I said. I'm sure everything's going to be fine. Come on, later you can call me a jerkface, and I'll do the crazy jerkface dance for you. [Gestures in a silly fashion while grinning widely] It is a dance of stupitude and sorry-ness. [Slumps over his shoulders when his cheer up attempt does not work] Okay, well, I'm going to go grab some books for our trip. We don't have much time, so I'll be back to help you pack in a few.
Callum checks the door one more time as he turns away from it, then fixes his bag on his shoulder and leaves the room.
Scene Change
Back inside the forest, Runaan walks in front of Rayla.
Runaan I thought you could do it, Rayla, but I was wrong.
Rayla [Puts her hand on her chest with a pleading expression] You're not wrong. I can do it.
Runaan I know you've never taken before. I brought you because you're talented. Maybe the fastest and strongest of any of us. But it takes more than that. There's an instinct. A moment of truth. And in that moment, you hesitate. [Stops and turns around to Rayla with an angry look]
Rayla [Returns the angry look] I won't hesitate again.
Runaan You will. I see now that you're still just a child. Your heart isn't hard enough to do whatever it takes.
Rayla I messed up. I know I did. [Shakes her head] Because I let that human go, we're all in danger. But that's why you have to let me make it right.
Runaan No, it's too late for that.
Rayla [Tenses up] I bound myself, my heart for-- [Puts her hands on her blades, about to pull them out when she is stopped]
Runaan You'll be unbound when the job is done. Your role now is to stay out of the way. [Points to a nearby rock] You will wait here, quietly.
Rayla sits down with a grumpy look on her face.
Runaan If we're not back by sunrise, go home.
Runaan walks away and Rayla leaves her head hanging, then looks up at the castle of Katolis and the rocks surrounding it. She thinks for a while, then makes a decision.
Rayla I can fix this.
Rayla gets up and runs off, jumping off a couple of stones as she heads towards the castle
Scene Change
Callum enters the castles library where he passes two statues before approaching a book shelf. He pulls out a book called "Lost Secrets of Xadia", which he places onto the floor and begins reading it with a smile. Suddenly the pages begin turning on their own, leaving Callum shocked and he stumbles backward.
Callum [Gasps] How in the...
Claudia [Giggling as she comes out from behind a shelf, carrying a Primal Stone. She draws a rune into the air and whispers] Aspiro.
The drawn rune summons a gust of wind that slams the book against another bookshelf. Claudia continues to giggle while she approaches Callum, who then stands back up on his feet.
Callum I thought the book was haunted or something.
Claudia [Giggles] You should have seen the look on your face. It was completely adorable.
Callum [Speaks at the same time as Claudia] Ridiculous. [Pauses] Did you just say adorable?
Claudia Did I?
Callum [Blushes and clears throat] It's so amazing that you can do things like that.
Claudia Nah, it's just a simple wind breath rune. [Lifts her Primal Stone and draws a smaller scaled rune again] Aspiro. [Blows a small gust of wind into Callum's face] Can you smell the peanut butter?
Callum Oh, yeah. Is that part of the spell?
Claudia Nope, it's just what I had for lunch.
Both [Laughing]
Claudia [Holds up the Primal Stone] See this? It's a primal stone. It uses magical energy from one of the six primal sources. Look. [Hands it to Callum]
Callum [Takes the stone and examines it in awe] Wow. What's inside?
Claudia It's a storm, a real storm. Captured from the top of Mount Kalik.
Callum That's incredible. You're so lucky you get to learn magic.
Claudia Well, you get to learn sword-fighting.
Callum I'd switch places in a second.
Claudia gasps, then taps her nose and wags her finger at Callum, then runs off without a word. She turns left, then corrects herself and dashes to the right instead. Callum taps his nose the same way she did, then slumps over his shoulders.
Callum I do not understand girls.
Scene Change
In a tower of the castle, King Harrow gazes out of a window, when Viren approaches him.
Viren My king, we have not been able to find the elves. Sundown is only an hour away. Soren and the others have returned to bolster your defenses.
Harrow It won't be enough. I've accepted that tonight, I may pay the price for our mistakes.
Viren [Places a hand on Harrow's shoulder] Harrow, don't give up just yet. Claudia and I are still searching for a creative solution.
Harrow [In a serious tone] Call it what it is...dark magic.
Viren [Backs away in shock] Yes.
Harrow I've spent years going along with these "creative solutions", and where has it gotten me?
Viren I don't understand.
Harrow I know you don't. Leave me.
Viren leaves the room and closes the door behind him, when suddenly Claudia rushes towards him, exclaiming excitedly while tapping her nose and pointing back and forth between herself and her father.
Viren Okay, what is that, with the nose, the finger? Not everyone speaks Claudia, Claudia.
Claudia It means, I've got something. [Smiles confidently]
Scene Change
Callum knocks on Ezran's door again.
Callum Ezran, we need to get going. It's almost sundown. [Raises an eyebrow in worry] Ez? [Places his bag down and opens the pet door to check Ezran's room, finding it to be empty] Oh, no.
Soldier Prince Callum.
Callum [Hits his head] Ow! Uh... [Chuckles, holding his head] Of course we're both here. Why wouldn't we be?
Soldier Right. Well, the king wants to see you alone, Prince Callum.
Callum Oh, perfect. But he could have seen both of us if he wanted to. [Picks up his bag and leaves]
Soldier [Rolls his eyes]
Scene Change
Rayla jumps through the tree tops and stops when she runs into two guards conversing.
Male guard Yesterday, I had two eggs for breakfast and I was starving. Today, I had four eggs and I'm stuffed. [Pats belly] So, tomorrow--
Female guard Three eggs, I get it. We don't need to talk.
Male guard [Disappointed] I was going to say two eggs and one sausage.
Rayla narrows her eyes and continues her way through the trees, then hides behind a tree when two more patrolling guards pass. When she reaches the river, she shuts her eyes for a moment, then inhales sharply to gather the courage to try her luck on climbing the wall. She pulls out her knives and jumps over rocks in the water, then slams her blades into the rock surface of the cliff. Using this method, she ascends further.
Scene Change
Callum [Opens the door to the throne room and peeks in] You wanted to see me?
Harrow turns around to face him and Callum walks up to his stepfather, then drops his bag on the ground and looks down sadly.
Harrow Prince Callum.
Callum [Bows] My king.
Harrow No, I... Please. [Steps closer and gestures Callum to raise his head]
Callum Okay. [Raises his head]
Harrow Callum, I know I'm not your birth father, but I want you to know that... [Inhales deeply] This isn't easy. So, the most important things, I've written down. [Pulls out a sealed letter and hands it to Callum]
Callum [Takes the letter] A letter? [Examines the seal]
Harrow You'll understand in time. I want you to break the seal when... [Sighs] Well, you know when.
Callum When you've been killed.
Harrow [Puts hands on his shoulders] War is full of uncertaincies.
Callum Why can't you do something about it? Can't you just make peace with them?
Harrow It's not that simple.
Callum [Pushes him away] It seems pretty simple to me. You don't want to die. I'm sure the elves and dragons don't want to die. So, everyone agrees.
Harrow There are centuries of history. Generations of wrongs and crimes. On both sides. I am responsible for some of those wrongs. I have done terrible things. I thought they were necessary. Now, I don't know. But I do know I will pay the price for the choices I made.
Callum There has to be a way to make it right.
Harrow It's too late. What is done cannot be undone.
Callum But you're the king. You can do anything.
Harrow [Sighs and chuckles] The great illusion of childhood is that adults have all the power and freedom. But the truth is the opposite. A child is freer than a king.
Callum [Looks down at the letter and clenches it in his fist] I'm going to give this back to you this weekend, okay? I'm not going to have to open this.
Harrow Take care of your brother. [Turns his back to him]
Callum prepares to walk away and grabs his bag, when Harrow approaches him once more. When Callum turns around, the two embrace each other and hold each other for a while as tears fill the corners of their eyes; one last goodbye.
Scene Change
Rayla reaches the top of the cliff and slumps over the castle wall, panting in exhaustion. She manages to pull herself onto the wall floor with a grunt and allows herself to gasp for air on the ground, before pushing herself back up. She gazes over the forest with a determined look on her face.
Rayla You're wrong about me. [Puts blades away] I can do this. I will do this. [Puts on her hood and proceeds into the castle]
Scene Change
Callum passes through the hallway when he notices movement in the corner of his eyes. This movement is Rayla, who sneaks her way through the castle.
Callum Ez, is that you? [Turns to enter the hallway where he notices the movement and calls out] Hello?
Callum continues through the hallway as Rayla emerges from behind a knight's armor, then silently follows him, readying her blades. As she nears him, Callum stops and smiles, expecting Ezran.
Callum You know you can't sneak up on me. [Turns around and exclaims in fear upon seeing Rayla]
Rayla takes down her hood and steps closer to Callum, a determined expression on her face.
Callum [Stammering] Uh, uh, you're not who I thought you... [Points in fear] You're one of those, with the pointy...
Rayla [Smiling] Oh, you don't like my ears?
Callum [Stuttering] No. I mean, yeah. Yes, I do, I guess. I mean... I meant the pointy swords. [Flinches as Rayla pulls her swords out again]
Rayla [Points her sword at Callum] That's far enough. I'm looking for someone.
Callum Oh. Uh, did you check back there? [Points to the side]
When Rayla glances over to where he had pointed, Callum takes the opportunity to grab a nearby drape and pulls it on top of Rayla. He then runs off, screaming and panting heavily, stumbling on his way. Rayla cuts the drapes open with a twirl of her blades, then rushes after Callum. He tries to block her path by pushing over a knight's armor, but Rayla jumps against the wall, leaping over it. As she threatens to catch up to him, Callum makes his way outside, where he runs past two soldiers.
Callum She's right behind me. [Points back towards Rayla]
The soldiers ready their swords, but after a twirl of her blades, Rayla manages to dodge any advances by leaping over them, then forces them to the ground by sweeping their legs with the bent part of her weapons. She smiles proudly.
Callum Hey, you swept the leg!
Rayla What?
Callum [Stuttering] Uh, uh, nothing.
Callum awkwardly steps away, then continues running, followed by Rayla. The chase heads into the tower stairway.
Callum [Pushes open a door and calls out in panic] Lord Viren! Claudia! Anyone! [Grunts as he is pushed over by Rayla, then stumbles into a nearby table and loses Harrow's letter as his bag drops to the ground. Holds his head as turns to look at Rayla]
Rayla [Steps in after him] You don't have to die. [Approaches him slowly] There are only two targets tonight.
Callum Wait, two? What do you mean?
Rayla I'm here for the king. And I'm also here for his son, Prince Ezran.
Callum [Widens eyes in shock] You can't. That's not fair. Why would you hurt someone who's done nothing wrong?
Rayla Humans cut down the King of the Dragons, and destroyed his only egg, the Dragon Prince. [Points her blade at Callum's throat] Justice will not be denied.
Callum [Looks down sadly] I see. [Looks back up with a serious expression] Well, then, you've found me. I am Prince Ezran.
Scene Change
King Harrow is being equipped with armor for the upcoming fight by his guards, when the door opens and Viren walks in, carrying a mysterious yellow basket.
Harrow Not a great day for a picnic, Viren.
Viren On that, we agree. [Walks up to Harrow] Moonshadow Elves are dangerous, elite fighters. Under a full moon, they become nearly invisible, and they can penetrate any defense. Nothing in the five kingdoms can stop them.
Harrow I know this.
Viren They will find you, and they will kill you.
Harrow Not helping, Viren.
Viren But it doesn't have to be you. In the black sands of the Midnight Desert dwells a mysterious snake called a Soulfang Serpent. [Holds the basket forward, in which hissing can be heard] The Soulfang has an unusual diet. Its bite drains and consumes the spirit of its prey. On our last journey into Xadia, I acquired a rather unique specimen. [Opens the basket and lifts the snake with his staff, revealing it to have two heads] Two heads, two bites, two souls held at once. And through magic, I can switch your spirit with another. The Moonshadow Elves will find the king's body, but your spirit will survive.
Harrow gazes at him with a serious expression.
Scene Change
Rayla [Steps closer toward Callum] I have to do this. I'm sorry. I don't want to, but I have to.
Callum Why? You know this is wrong.
Rayla An assassin doesn't decide right and wrong, only life and death.
Callum That's very clever, but come on, really? How does this solve anything?
Rayla This is justice. Humans attacked us unprovoked.
Callum So it's okay for you to do the same thing?
Rayla Well, no. It's not the same thing, because we're attacking you provoked.
Callum Then it's a cycle. You hurt me, someone will get revenge against the elves. It won't end.
Ezran [Whispers] Callum.
Rayla and Callum both turn their heads to look at a portrait of a woman with sheep on the wall.
Ezran Psst, Callum.
Callum Shh, go away.
Ezran I found something.
Rayla Are you talking to that painting?
Callum [Chuckles nervously] Uh, why would I do that? 'Cause it's not a good time.
Ezran You mean, because you're with a girl?
Rayla steps toward the painting and opens the path behind it, revealing Ezran and Bait.
Ezran Uh... Jelly tart? [Offers her a jelly tart]
Callum Kid, get out of here.
Ezran Callum, what's going on?
Rayla Callum? I thought you were Prince Ezran. You lied to me.
Callum Okay, how is that worse than trying to kill someone?
Ezran [Chomps and swallows his jelly tart, then holds Bait up to Rayla] Have you met Bait? Say hello to my little friend.
Ezran closes his eyes and Baits emits a blinding glow, which forces Rayla to shield her eyes with her hands, distracting her briefly.
Ezran Callum, follow me. I have to show you something.
Callum picks up his bag and the two disappear into the passage behind the painting. While closing the painting, Ezran's hand leaves behind a jelly stain. Rayla meanwhile tries to adjust her eyes back to the light.
Scene Change
The courtyard shows a soldier patrolling, before the focus is brought back onto the castle tower.
Harrow No. I won't hide in the body of another, while someone else dies paying the price for my decisions.
Viren Two hundred men and women are ready to fall protecting you tonight, but you won't let one soldier sacrifice their life for you?
Harrow It's not the same. I would rather die a king, than live as a coward.
Viren Ah. So, that's what this is really about.
Harrow What are you talking about?
Viren Pride.
Harrow No, I already told you the problem. [Turns around, visibly irritated] It's dark magic.
Viren Yes, it is. It's clever. It's brilliant. It's practical. It will save your life and many, many others.
Harrow It's a shortcut. We may not pay now, but we will pay the blood price eventually. What do you think got us here? Dark magic!
Viren [Scoffs] You're acting stubborn and ungrateful.
Harrow Should I be grateful that you destroyed that dragon's egg? Thank you for starting this unwinnable war? Thank you for angering the dragons and the elves so much that tonight they are here for my life?
Viren Destroying that egg saved our kingdom. Maybe all of humanity.
Harrow [Shouting] It was an egg!
Viren [Raising his voice as well] And it would have become the most powerful creature in the world!
Harrow turns away wordlessly and walks to a nearby chest, on which he sits down and brings his hand to his face, exhaling in frustration.
Viren What is done cannot be undone. I am offering you a path forward. Your discomfort is understandable. You don't feel right trading your life for another's. But know this, every one of these men and women would gladly trade their life to save yours. [Gestures to the nearby guards, who exchange concerned looks]
Harrow [Drops his hand as he has a thought] Would you, Viren?
Viren I... [Sighs]
Harrow [Angrily] Get out.
Viren takes his basket and bows before the king before he readies to leave.
Scene Change
Callum and Ezran rush through the dungeon corridors in panic, panting heavily, while Ezran carries Bait.
Rayla [Calling out] You're only making this worse.
Callum Worse how?
Ezran This way.
Ezran runs to the left, followed by Callum, when they run into a dead end.
Callum We're trapped. What do we do now?
Ezran [Approaches the wall, then turns to Callum with a smile] Time for a puzzle. [Turns back and begins pressing against the stone wall] Rock, rock, stone, rock, stone, stone. Rock, stone, rock, stone, stone...
Callum [Watching him observantly] Wait, what's the difference between the rocks and the stones?
Ezran [Clenches fist in frustration and turns around] Ugh! You made me do stone instead of rock. [Returns to pressing the stones] Rock, rock, stone, rock, stone, stone, rock, stone, rock.
Callum [Clenches teeth in panic and gets fidgety as he looks back at the corridor] Uh...
Ezran smiles proudly and turns to look at the floor behind them, while a secret door opens, leading into a secret room via a spiral staircase. The brothers stumble back and wait until the passage has fully formed.
Callum Wow.
The trio makes their way down the stairs and end up in Viren's secret castle chambers, where Ezran pulls a lever to close the passage behind them. They watch the stairs pull away while they bring some distance between themselves and the entrance.
Ezran [Gestures victoriously] Yes!
Callum You're sure she won't be able to follow us?
Ezran No way. It took me over a month to figure out that combination.
The trio flinches as the door rumbles and appears to reopen, and watch as Rayla descends into the room on top of the stairway.
Ezran But how did you...
Rayla I just pressed all the stones with the jelly handprints.
Ezran facepalms, leaving a jelly handprint on his forehead. Rayla steps closer, letting her eyes wander through the room, discovering the bodies of animals inside strange jars.
Rayla What is this place? Runaan is right. There's nothing in humans worth sparing. [Points her blade at the boys, who back away in fear] Time's up. Humans destroyed the egg of the Dragon Prince. There must be justice.
Callum [Stands in front of Ezran protectively] You'll have to get through me.
Rayla [Swings her blade] Really? [Begins to approach them]
Ezran Wait. [Nudges his head towards a corner] You need to see something.
Rayla [Points her blade again] I'm not falling for that flashing frog trick again.
Bait [Grunts and glows red]
Ezran He's a glow toad. But there's no trick this time. Please, look. [Points towards a cloaked object]
Rayla [Hesitates for a moment] Fine. You uncover it. Slowly.
Ezran [Gestures in defense] I can hear something inside, something alive.
Ezran pulls down the sheet of the object, revealing the shimmering egg of the Dragon Prince.
Rayla [Gasps] It... It can't be.
Callum The egg....it wasn't destroyed.
The three gaze upon the egg together.
Fades to credits.
