Unicorns were a species of compassionate and gentle magical beings that were once native to Xadia and were connected to the Star Primal. Unicorns were considered rare before they were said to have gone extinct at the hands of humanity, who hunted them to extinction in order to empower their dark magic spells.

Appearance

Unicorns were horse-like creatures that sported a long, slim, and twisted horn on their forehead.

Information

Unicorns were known as the most selfless beings of Xadia, compassionate enough to pity the state of the humans inside Elarion when they faced starvation and poverty. They believed that humans did not deserve to suffer, as they had not chosen to be born without magic. Although the elves warned them that their kindness may not be reciprocated, the unicorns could not ignore their compassion that ran deeply, refusing to be convinced that humans could be dangerous. In order to help the suffering humans, the unicorn Leola bestowed them with the knowledge of magic and gifted a few wise humans with powerful orbs called Primal Stones, which contained magical energy. Leola also taught them Ancient Draconic, the language of the dragons, and the runes necessary to release the stones' magic, which would allow them to cast spells.

However, the actions of the unicorns would eventually lead to their demise, as selfish dark mages tried to hunt their kind to better understand their powerful magic. Although their stellar magic and their devious cunning made them almost impossible to hunt, dark mages eventually hunted the unicorns until they became extinct, seeking their horns as a component for their spells.

A rare subspecies of the unicorn was the Pearl Unicorn.

Unicorns were able to create Primal Stones for humanity, which contain vast energy from the Primal Sources of Xadia. They could also teach Ancient Draconic, magical runes, as well as spells to other individuals.

Trivia

• Viren claimed that, after his own long unsuccessful search, Claudia had managed to capture a unicorn and brought him its very rare horn. Said horn was used in Viren's spell to enchant Sarai's spear with dark magic so that Harrow could slay Avizandum. A further comment by writer Devon Giehl emphasized that, although Claudia had interacted with a unicorn and acquired its horn, the direct circumstances are purposefully kept a mystery. She also implied that the scene portrayed in early concept art may no longer apply to the final canon if given the chance to revisit it, describing it as "a version that is maybe true", due to the changes made to the story after the sketches were drawn during early development.
• Unicorn horns were considered the most valuable and sought-after prize to dark mages.
• Unicorns were one of the first additions planned for the first novel. Originally, they were supposed to rival the dragons, as they supported the humans while the dragons allied with the elves. The creators may go into depth about their story in Book Six: Stars.
• Kpp'Ar developed an obsession with unicorns before he was trapped inside an enchanted coin by his former pupil Viren, which was proven by the numerous unicorn imageries and decorations inside his Puzzle House.
• The head of a unicorn appears on Ezran's backpack button.
