Unfinished Business is the fifty-eighth episode of The Dragon Prince. It is the fourth chapter of the seventh book, "Dark".

After an emotional reunion, Rayla undergoes a ritual to reverse her banishment. Terry has a heartbreaking realization about Claudia.

Plot[]

Rayla, Callum, Runaan, Stella, and Sneezles are in the Moonshadow Forest as they perform the dancing ritual that will allow them to enter the Silvergrove. Rayla encourages Runaan to go meet Ethari first since she has not revealed her banishment to him yet. As Runaan runs off, Callum comforts Rayla since she does not have the heart to tell him. Meanwhile, Ethari is crafting weapons in his workshop when Runaan enters. Ethari initially dismisses Runaan as a hallucination and a phantom that does not want him to move on. But upon feeling Runaan's touch, Ethari realizes that he is not dreaming. Runaan and Ethari share a romantic kiss and a hug, for Runaan finally kept his promise of reuniting and returning home.

In the Garden of Innocence, Terry abruptly wakes up as Claudia greets and informs him that the winged sphere has not returned to them. Aaravos then arrives and asks Terry to show him where he found the Shimmercrow feathers in the Katolian forest. Terry agrees as he leads Aaravos out of the Garden of Innocence, prompting Claudia to wait alone for a little while.

Outside the Silvergrove, Callum puts on Earthblood Elf disguises for him and Sneezles. However, Rayla wants to leave since she is a ghost who was banished for abandoning the other Moonshadow Elf assassins and cannot return to the Silvergrove. Rayla also does not want to burden Runaan and Ethari with her mistakes, and that her home is wherever Callum is. Callum and Rayla share a kiss as Runaan and Ethari return to them, with Runaan asking her why she did not tell him about her banishment. Rayla says she does not want to ruin the moment, but Runaan and Ethari assure her that they are her family no matter what and will set things right for her.

Terry guides Aaravos to a place where Shimmercrow feathers litter the ground before asking what they are looking for. Aaravos explains that while the Moon Primal Stone holds all the magic they need, they need a special key to access the In-Between. They soon spot a female Shimmercrow holding two worms in her beak for her two chicks before Aaravos reveals that the lost souls trapped in the In-Between have unfinished business in the world of the living. Aaravos then causes the Shimmercrow to fall to the ground before approaching her. Terry intends to stop Aaravos using vines, only for Aaravos to effortlessly disintegrate them. Aaravos picks up the Shimmercrow and puts her in a sack while revealing that she only thinks of her chicks and how she will try to return to them as she slowly dies of asphyxiation with unfinished business.

Runaan and Ethari summon Lyrennus, the Keeper of the Well of the Forgotten, to invoke the "Ritual of the New Moon" to reverse Rayla's banishment. Lyrennus is surprised to find Runaan alive and frowns that Rayla has returned. Lyrennus decides to lead the group to the Well of the Forgotten, which is hidden within a massive tree hollow. Runaan and Ethari volunteer to bind their fate with Rayla's, and despite knowing they will be banished as well if Rayla fails the ritual, they do not wish to be separated again. Lyrennus allows Rayla, Runaan, and Ethari to enter the cave, but forbids Callum, Stella, and Sneezles since they are outsiders.

Terry angrily calls Aaravos out for telling half-truths and let others fill in the rest, causing them to lie to themselves and fall for the Startouch Elf's deception and manipulation. As Terry prepares to tell Claudia, but Aaravos states it will not matter since he is her new father and she has become his new daughter. Aaravos reveals to Terry that Claudia has been hiding some things to protect him from the ugly truth, such as how Terry's true heart allows him to be the only one who can see the map to the Garden of Innocence and that the garden itself is a graveyard where unicorns came to die and rest forever. The heartbroken Terry realizes that Claudia has been using him as a means to an end. Aaravos takes no pleasure in Terry's pain before elaborating how the true heart is a gift of childhood and that everyone have innocent eyes to experience the world's beauty in a simple way for a few years. Aaravos then commends the weeping Terry how he was lucky for holding such innocent wonder longer than most. The devastated Terry runs back to the Garden of Innocence to confront Claudia as Aaravos telepathically explains to Terry about how he has seen generations of humans and elves accept the darkness that lurks beside the light, for there are only shades of gray instead of black and white, and everyone must carry complexity, with Karim, Janai, Ezran, and Soren being the examples. Aaravos also reveals to Terry that there is beauty in such burden, and although Terry's heart will be slightly heavier, there will be no more half-truths, for Aaravos and Claudia will do what must be done, however dangerous, however vile.

Rayla stands in the Well of the Forgotten as Lyrennus talks about how everyone can be reborn from darkness like the Moon. But for Rayla to achieve the rebirth, she must prove herself worthy of forgiveness and absolution by facing the five elves she wronged. Lyrennus then conjures a miniature moon that breaks into five glowing petals. Four of the petals land in the water and summon the spirits of Ram, Skor, Callisto, and Andromeda. Rayla recites how assassins do not take lives lightly, and the four elves' lives were taken during their mission. She then reveals that the four elves' sacrifices were not in vain before she faces them one by one. Rayla tells Callisto, who pledged his breath for freedom, that they have freed themselves from an awful and pointless war. Rayla then tells Andromeda, who pledged her eyes for truth, that they have found a truth that changed the world. Rayla then tells Skor, who pledged his strength for honor, that humans and elves have finally begun to treat each other for honor again. Rayla finally tells Ram, who pledged his blood for justice, that although King Harrow was killed to pay for Avizandum's death, a life for a life is not justice before asking how much suffering is enough to pay for the mistakes that have been made. Rayla says she does not have the answer, so she apologizes to the four elves and vowing to carry all of them with her forever. The spirits of Ram, Skor, Callisto, and Andromeda dissipate before their petals float into Rayla's hands to form a blossom. Rayla then turns to Runaan, whom she believes is the fifth elf she wronged. Runaan hugs and advises Rayla that she only needs to forgive herself. Runaan then notices that the ritual is not finished and asks Lyrennus why it is not completed. The furious Lyrennus reveals that he is the fifth elf Rayla wronged, since she left his Ram to die as he conjures an illusion of his beloved and bloodied son. The terrified Rayla flees from the Well of the Forgotten as the angry Lyrennus proclaims that he will never forgive her.

Claudia tries to apologize to Terry for not telling him everything by saying that she has done many terrible things for good reasons before asking how their current situation is different. Terry argues to Claudia on how she did not trust him for making his own choice and used her, which is something she had never done before. Terry goes on how that it is not how to treat loved ones or any other person and says that he cannot be himself anymore if he lets her treat him that way. Claudia proclaims that Terry has always been himself, but Terry argues about how Aaravos declared that the revelation would change him before saying he prefers to love the person he has always been. Terry finally states that he is not the person whom Claudia fell in love with if he let himself change to someone he does not like. The tearful Claudia realizes that she and Terry are breaking up.

Callum, Stella, and Sneezles comfort the sobbing Rayla outside the Well of the Forgotten. Rayla says it is her fault that Ram is dead, but Callum tells her that she did both the hard and the right thing. Rayla wishes to beg and grovel before Lyrennus and say anything he wants to hear. However, Runaan and Ethari encourage Rayla to not betray herself and not to carry Lyrennus's pain for him, for her suffering will not mend his wounds, and that they will always be a family regardless of what happens. Rayla then returns to the Well of the Forgotten to empathize with Lyrennus's grief. She confesses that she was wrong for leaving Ram to die before explaining that punishments only create more pain instead of peace and will never bring him back. Rayla intends to honor Lyrennus choice of remaining a ghost and not completing the Ritual of the New Moon. Lyrennus is moved by Rayla's words and choose to forgive her by giving her the last petal, allowing her to complete the ritual and be welcomed back to the Silvergrove. Lyrennus then calmly tells Rayla that her family is waiting for her. Rayla joyfully embraces Runaan and Ethari for she has finally returned to her home. Callum asks if he should join the hug but does not want to invade privacy, only for Rayla to pull him, Stella, and Sneezles into the embrace.

Aaravos returns to the Garden of Innocence to find Claudia alone and Terry nowhere in sight. Claudia reveals that Terry has left them for discovering the truth. She then goes on about how she knew Terry would leave once he finds out, although Terry also said that he would always love her no matter what. Claudia says that Terry had to leave for himself and because he has unfinished business. Just then, the winged sphere returns to the Garden of Innocence and lands in Claudia's hands before its wings vanish and complete its transformation into a Moon Primal Stone. Claudia asks Aaravos if what they are doing will be worth it. Aaravos only looks at her and the Primal Stone silently.

Terry kneels in front of two Shimmercrow chicks in the Katolian forest before apologizing about their deceased mother and promising to take care of them as he carries their nest with him.

Trivia[]

  • Devon Giehl, one of the episode's writers, mentioned in interviews that Rayla's ritual draws from indigenous and spiritual traditions of reconciliation, where symbolic acts help restore someone's place in a community.[1]
  • Though not explicitly explained in the episode, Terry's connection to the In-Between and his ability to see the blank map is tied to latent star primal sensitivity—something only hinted at in Season 6 when he reacts to Aaravos's magic.[1]
  • Animators revealed that the sword reflection shot-where Ethari sees Runaan - was one of the most complex visual effects in the season. It involved layering multiple lighting passes to get the moonlight and metal gleam just right.[1]
  • The moment Ethari sees Runaan in the blade's reflection mirrors the scene in "Echoes of Thunder" where Runaan polishes his blade before the assassination mission. It is a visual echo meant to show how far they have come—and how much has changed.[1]
  • Voice actor Benjamin Callins added emotional ad-libs during Terry's confrontation with Claudia that were not in the original script. The team kept them because they added raw vulnerability to Terry's realization.[1]
  • Lyrennus, the Moonshadow mage who oversees Rayla's ritual, has horn markings that subtly match Ram's—his son who died during the assassination mission. It is a quiet design choice that reinforces his grief without needing dialogue.[1]
