The Titan and the King is the sixty-first episode of The Dragon Prince. It is the seventh chapter of the seventh book, "Dark".

While Callum and his friends race to stop Aaravos from bringing about Eternal Night, the trapped Startouch Elf gives Ezran a grim history lesson.

Plot[]

Callum sent a Shadowhawk to the Valley of the Graves to tell Ezran about Aaravos's liberation and his plan to prevent the Eternal Night from happening and to stop the Startouch Elf once and for all. Callum, Rayla, Stella, Sneezles, Astrid, Runaan, and Ethari embark on a mission to recruit Tidebound Elf Archmage Akiyu, Amaya, Janai, and the remaining Archdragons (Zubeia, Rex Igneous, and Domina Profundis) to confront and imprison Aaravos again. Callum says that he, Sneezles, and Runaan are journeying to tide pools to meet with Akiyu, Rayla and Stella will use the Siren Stone to summon Domina Profundis, Ethari will head for Umber Tor to meet with Rex Igneous, and asks Ezran to get Zubeia when she recovers from her illness. Pyrrah soon arrive at the Valley of Graves after bringing Soren, Terry, Aanya, and Hat from the Moon Nexus, and Ezran informs Callum's plan to them. Ezran allows Corvus in accompanying Soren, Terry, Pyrrah, and Hat to Fungi Lane to get Zubeia while he, Aanya, Azymondias, and Bait stay in the Valley of the Graves to keep an eye on the chained Aaravos. Ezran then stands on Sol Regem's skeleton to speak with Aaravos, who claims to be honored by the young king's visit. However, Ezran corrects Aaravos by saying that he has come to judge the Startouch Elf for his countless crimes. Aaravos then states that he is innocent.

At the Sunfire Elf camp, Astrid starts asking every human and Sunfire Elf she sees if they are Amaya before finally meeting her and Gren. Amaya and Gren take Astrid to the royal tent to meet with Janai and Kazi, and the Skywing Elf informs them about Aaravos's intention to use Lux Aurea's corrupted Sun Orb to destroy the Sun. Astrid, Amaya, and Gren ask Janai if their armies can fight Aaravos, but Janai clarifies that no army in the world can stand a chance against a Startouch titan. However, they can stop Aaravos by destroying the Sun Orb using a complex and dangerous spell that can only be performed it by the most powerful Sun mage: Karim. The imprisoned Karim refuses to cast the spell when they visit him since he believes that the Sun Orb can still be restored. However, he complies to perform the spell when Janai convinces him that only he can save the Sun herself.

Ethari arrives at Umber Tor to find Terbium and Chert cleaning up the boulders around Umber Tor's Great Gates before asking them to seek an audience with Rex Igneous. Terbium and Chert refuses to grant Ethari entrance and fib about Rex being absent from Umber Tor. However, Ethari can see Rex Igneous peering behind the Great Gates and decides to lure the Archdragon out by bringing up the Moonberry Surprise, a delicious treat that has never left the Silvergrove before. This prompts the intrigued Rex to burst out of the Great Gates to ask what Ethari is requesting, and the Moonshadow Elf encourages him to try the Moonberry Surprise first.

Ezran refuses to believe that Aaravos is innocent, but Aaravos says that it is the truth. Aaravos says that he is Ezran's greatest ally since he was the one who killed Sol Regem after the Archdragon burned Katolis to the ground. Ezran states that he already found allies in the dragons and the elves of Xadia who are also victims to the Startouch Elf's evil. However, Aaravos says that dragons and elves make poor allies since he spent centuries watching them enforcing their order that kept humans degraded and oppressed as lesser beings. Aaravos agreed that he betrayed the dragons and the elves by sharing the gift of magic to humans before he asks if his compassion towards humanity is proof of his innocence. Aaravos goes on about how the dragons and the elves killed his daughter Leola after she kindly shared magic with humans and that he carried on her work so humanity can have the power to throw off Xadia's yoke. Ezran asserts that Aaravos corrupted humans by teaching them dark magic, but Aaravos argues that he saw dark magic as compromise instead of corruption. Aaravos says that it is the nature of children to think that the world must be one way or another and that maturity allows everyone to realize that most of life is lived in the space between. Aaravos elaborates that he helped humanity mature so they could be free and that it was worth some compromise. Aaravos then praises Ezran for being a kind, courageous, and wise leader at such a young age before declaring that a new era of humanity is dawning in Xadia and that they can work together in turning a potential tragedy into a triumph. Aaravos encourages Ezran to compromise and move past his childish hesitation so they can help each other.

Soren, Corvus, Terry, and Hat meet with Mukho, Gus, and the Mushpals in Fungi Lane, and the Earthblood Elf mage says that Zubeia's healing is not complete that the magic inside her body can slowly corrupt her into a monster of pure darkness. However, Mukho defuses the tension by saying that Zubeia is fine as long as she returns to Fungi Lane in a week or two.

Ezran tells Aaravos that he will lead the world to a new era without compromising with the Startouch Elf. Ezran then states that Aaravos spent so long seeing the world through a lens of hate that he cannot see any other way to get what he want. However, Aaravos corrects Ezran by saying that humanity can only be seen clearly through the lens of history before deciding to reveal the secret story of Ezran's lineage. 3000 years ago, the Archdragon Shiruakh and the Startouch Elf Laurelion battled each other, and Shiruakh delivered the fatal bite that destroyed Laurelion's physical form at the cost of her life. One of Shiruakh's great fangs was then forged into the Nova Blade, a magical sword that can end a Startouch Elf's mortal existence. The Nova Blade eventually came to Ezran's ancestor: a young woman who played a key role in Aaravos's first defeat. Ezran's ancestor could have used the Nova Blade to destroy Aaravos's body, but she chose to spare him instead by imprisoning him. When Ezran's ancestor died, she took the Nova Blade's secret to her grave, causing it to be lost to history. Ezran chooses to follow in his ancestor's footsteps by having Aaravos imprisoned again and permanently. Aaravos then asks if he will be imprisoned by Callum.

Callum, Sneezles, and Runaan arrive at the tide pools and are shocked to see it destroyed and all of its inhabitants killed. Callum asks if a storm passed through the tide pools, but Runaan states that nothing in nature can cause such a devastation and believes that is in attack. Runaan scoops some water from the tide pools, and discovers that they are warm because they have been boiled. The horrified Callum realizes that Akiyu is in danger and rushes to her grotto with Runaan to help her.

The sun starts to set in Katolis as Ezran warns Aaravos to not talk about Callum. Aaravos claims that he and Callum share a mutual understanding about the need for compromise and that Callum will soon embrace dark magic to save the ones he love. Ezran asks Aaravos if he has seen it written in the stars, and Aaravos says that he has seen it written in Callum's eyes. Ezran accuses Aaravos for lying, but Aaravos replies that he never lies and that Ezran already knows deep down that Callum will walk the dark road before offering Ezran the chance to join his brother so they can embrace the darkness together. Ezran decides to walk away before Aaravos reminds him that he lingered long enough for the sun to set, allowing hordes of restless spirits to attack the Valley of the Graves.

Callum, Sneezles, and Runaan arrive at Akiyu's grotto, only to be devastated to find that the Tidebound Elf has been murdered. Runaan senses that they are not alone, and Callum soon calls Claudia to come out. Claudia reveals herself and is about to knock Callum out with a boulder, but Runaan shoves Callum out of the way and takes the hit. Callum and Claudia duel by casting various spells to counter each other's attacks. Claudia is about to suffocate Callum when Runaan regains consciousness and aims his bow at Claudia as he demands her to throw the relic staff away. Claudia complies and uses the last scale of Shiruakh to cover herself in an armor of dragon scales before breathing fire to cover her escape. Callum blames himself for his inability to stop Claudia from killing Akiyu, but Runaan advises Callum to not blame himself before asking if there is any other mage who can create another prison to contain Aaravos. The despaired Callum says there is no one else when he sees his corrupted reflection and the relic staff in the water. This gives Callum a different idea to defeat Aaravos before he retrieves the relic staff and asks Runaan to do him a favor.

Ezran, Zym, Bait, Aanya, and the Katolian soldiers continue to battle and prevents the hordes of restless spirits from freeing Aaravos. Just then, a Magma Titan spirit arrives and tears through the ballistae and chains, forcing Ezran and his allies to retreat. The liberated Aaravos reminds Ezran that he never lies before assuring the restless spirits to rejoice in the darkness because they will soon no longer have to fear the dawn.

Ziard arrives at Thunderfall in the middle of a thunderstorm and uses Aaravos's Moon staff to resurrect the petrified Avizandum. Following the spell's completion, Ziard refers to Avizandum as "Your Majesty" as the Dragon King opens his eyes and roars back to life.
