The Queen's Soul is a side story published through the official website of The Dragon Prince. It revolves around Janai and Karim, who participate in a sacred Sunfire Elf tradition as they reflect on the life and death of their beloved sister, Khessa. It is part of a short story series called "Reflections".[1]
Summary[]

Prince Karim of Lux Aurea waits for his sister Queen Janai in her royal tent, where the two are supposed to light a candle for their late sister Queen Khessa. Said candle is meant to burn through the night and guide her dead soul back to the Sun. However, Janai has been avoiding this moment, distracting herself with training sessions, causing her to arrive late. When told that she is too late, she reminds her brother that they are both too late as their sister had died weeks ago and that her soul is already lost. Karim manages to motivate Janai to begin with the ritual regardless of her negative emotions.
After painting each other's faces, they hum a melody as they kneel before the Soul Candle, lighting the candle through a flame sparking from Karim's fingertips. Watching the candle burn, they remember their sister's life and death. They tell Khessa that she was the guiding light of Lux Aurea, and that she was their family's warmth which will be dearly missed. However, as it appears Karim only cares about Janai's future as the new ruler of their city, Janai emphasizes that she is here to honor her sister, and she would do so through a dance.
Using two pairs of cymbals, the two perform a dance while humming the notes of the "Prominence Promenade", followed by singing Khessa's favorite anthems and melodies. They spend the rest of the night telling stories over the candlelight, honoring their sister one last time. When the sun rises, Karim reassures Janai once more that their sister had returned to the sun, before they depart to get breakfast.
Trivia[]
- The story confirms Karim to be the younger brother of Janai and Khessa, thus also making him a descendant of the late Aditi.
- Yellow plumerias, Khessa's favorite flower, is also the favorite flower of the story's writer Kris James.[2]
