Information[]
Ocean magic draws on the depths of the oceans and tides, and its power connects through rivers and lakes that flow back to it. This source is at its strongest during high tide, and deep underwater. It also strengthens during rainfall. While deserts and underground caverns do not provide ideal circumstances to cast Ocean magic, only a single drop of water is said to be needed to make use of the source. It is associated with flexibility, transformation, flow, surface-level vs depth, navigation, and awareness.[1]
Ocean magic is capable of conjuring and manipulating water, this includes the fluids in a creature's body.[2] It can also grant the ability to breathe underwater. Besides water spells, Ocean magic includes ice spells,[3] which are dynamic and forceful in nature, reaching everywhere and anywhere. It is additionally capable of spells related to marine life, such fish, kelp, and coral.[1]
An Ocean Primal Stone contains a mighty whirlpool or the tremendous pressure of the ocean floor trapped within it, able to command the tides, redirect rivers, or flood a room with water. It also enables a user to communicate with fish and grants the ability to breathe underwater.[1]
Creatures connected to the Ocean Primal, such as Tidebound Elves and Ocean Dragons, often forge strong connections to others, and can have hidden depths. Ocean mages can reflect the nature of their home: A Swamp mage and a River mage would look different, though they both connect to the same Primal Source.[4] There are currently no known Archdragons connection to the Ocean Primal. The position was previously held by Domina Profundis, prior to her death.[5]
Arcanum[]
The arcanum of the Ocean requires finding calm amongst constant change, and understanding the innate qualities of water - transformation, fluidity, and adaptability.[1] Rather than controlling the tides or fighting the currents, the true secret of the Ocean is the opposite; that you are not in control. It is about accepting that there are depths that you cannot see, that there are parts of yourself that you cannot understand, that there are things that cannot be controlled, and that you cannot control everything, no matter how hard you try.[2]
Nexus[]
The nexus of the Ocean is currently unknown.
Symbol[]
The symbol of the Ocean resembles two swirling currents in a circle. It can be seen carved into the side of the ancient lighthouses that dot Xadia's coastline. Some sailors claim to seen the symbol etched into rocky shores, indicating a hidden cove nearby.[1]
Gems[]
The magic gems connected to Ocean magic are known as Aquamarines.[6] They are identified by their aqua-blue color.[7]

- Interestingly, Villads gave Rayla some helpful advice that strongly resembles the secret of the Ocean arcanum. He told her that life is like a river; you cannot see too far ahead, you do not know where it will bend and turn, and you cannot control where it takes you.[8]
- During the search for Aaravos's Prison in the Sea of the Castout and during the fight with Claudia, Callum used two unnamed Ocean spells. The first created a spiral current around the mages feet, or the feet of another person, to help propel them through the water. The second created and offensive current that pushed the enemy back.[9]
- In the "Amor Stella Vitae" spell, the Ocean is represented by a small amount of blood as the ingredient that will create a body.[10]
