The Great Bookery is the fortieth episode of The Dragon Prince. It is the fourth chapter of the fifth book, "Ocean".
As Callum scours Lux Aurea's library for lore of the Startouch Elves, Amaya clears the air with Rayla. Karim meets a powerful potential ally.
Plot[]
Callum and Rayla ride through the desolate streets of the Lux Aurea with Bait, Stella, Amaya, Gren, and Kazi by their side. Amaya and Gren explain that the corruption of the Sunforge had infected any living creature remaining in the city and twisted them into bloodthirsty monsters. Janai's previous attempt of reclaiming Lux Aurea failed due to the corrupted creatures' massive numbers. The corrupted creatures also despise daylight and tend to wait until sundown to emerge, which gives the group around five hours to complete their mission. Kazi leads the group into the Great Bookery and briefly reminisce their days as a university student who would use the book drop as their secret reading place. Callum, Kazi, Bait, and Stella sprint towards the section dedicated to Startouch Elves on the upper level while Rayla, Amaya, and Gren remain on the first floor.
Karim and Pharos trek through the desert until they find a flock of Sunbirds circling above a large cave. The pair venture into the cave where they find a slumbering Sol Regem. The Archdragon of the Sun senses the Sunfire Elves' presence and wakes up before he orders them to leave.
As Callum and Kazi search for potential clues about Startouch Elf weaknesses, Amaya apologizes to Rayla about their first yet hostile meeting at the Banther Lodge due to her initial perspective on elves, which then changed after befriending and falling in love with Janai. Rayla swiftly forgives Amaya before the latter vows to kill the Moonshadow Elf if she ever hurt Callum again.
Karim kneels and introduces himself to Sol Regem before he informs the Archdragon about humanity's return to Xadia after 1000 years. The banished prince believes that the presence of humans is causing Sunfire Elves to lose their cultural identity before he conjures a hovering fireball and beseeches Sol Regem to reclaim his rightful place as the King of the Dragons.
Callum, Bait, and Stella are reading several books and scrolls when Kazi comes across a poem called "The Death of the Immortal" that describes the demise of the Startouch Elf Laurelion. Rayla confesses to Amaya and Gren that she left Callum in order to protect him so that she could be strong alone. Amaya tells that Rayla she used to have a similar mindset after Sarai died until she realized that she felt lonely. But after meeting Janai, Amaya learns that true strength is found through trust and sharing burdens with loved ones. Rayla is touched and inspired by Amaya's words before she gives the general a warm hug.
Upon listening to Karim's plea about reclaiming the power he lost, Sol Regem begins to display and boast his deteriorated body with bitter sarcasm. The former Dragon King reveals that he was already losing hope before he lost his sight and extinguishes Karim's fireball after he forlornly proclaimed that the sun will never rise again for him. Sol Regem chooses to return to his slumber and orders the dejected Karim and Pharos to leave for the last time.
Callum and Kazi discover through "The Death of the Immortal" poem that Startouch Elves can be slain with a magical sword known as the Nova Blade. Stella sneakily places a scroll through her portal when Rayla decides to talk to Callum in private about her parents and Runaan who had been trapped inside Viren's enchanted coins. Callum promises to help Rayla's family since he came across a spell that can restore bodies to separated spirits. Amaya and Gren alert everyone that the sun is setting, which prompts Callum to rush back to the scroll where he found the spell.
Pharos despairs in the failure of beseeching Sol Regem, but Karim regains hope when he believes that they can restore the Archdragon to his former glory by healing his blindness.
Gren and Kazi decide to ride back to the Sunfire Elf camp first on the Shadowpaw while Rayla and Amaya stay behind to retrieve Callum from the Great Bookery as the sun finally sets on Lux Aurea. Callum is frustrated about Amaya carrying him from the book that holds the spell that can save Rayla's family, but is delighted that Stella is able to bring the page along after she ripped it off. Callum tells Rayla that the spell he needs require Quasar Diamonds, which are currently in the Star Scraper alongside the Nova Blade. The group is horrified to find a corrupted Banther feasting on the horses and decides to head for the second exit. Callum accidentally nudges some books to fall to the floor, and the noise quickly attracts more corrupted Banthers into entering the library. Despite Callum's magic, Rayla's arrows, and Amaya's sword, more and more corrupted Banthers appear and surround the group. Just as all hope seems lost, Zubeia crashes through the library's skylight before she starts killing the corrupted Banthers with her immense strength and her lightning powers. Ezran, Zym, Soren, and Corvus motivate Callum's group to climb on Zubeia before noticing Bait being surrounded by several corrupted Banthers. Amaya succeeds in grabbing and tossing bait to Soren before she chooses to stay behind to distract corrupted Banthers. Team Zym encourages Amaya to come with them until her shouting "Go!" convinces the heroes to leave without her. Zubeia climbs out of the Great Bookery when one corrupted Banther manages to bite her left flank. Corvus swings down and shoves the corrupted Banther off before he falls to the floor and injures himself near the book drop. Amaya immediately rushes to Corvus's side to protect him as more corrupted Banthers close in on them. With certain death seemingly approaching, Corvus tells Amaya that it has been the greatest honor to serve under her. As Amaya prepares to make her last stand, she remembers what Kazi said about the book drop and uses it to shelter herself and Corvus from the corrupted Banthers. Team Zym is relieved to learn that Amaya and Corvus will survive the night as Zubeia flies them to the Storm Spire.
