The Frozen Ship is the forty-eighth episode of The Dragon Prince. It is the third chapter of the sixth book, "Stars".

On their journey to the Star Scraper, Rayla and Callum spend a chilly night at an unusual campsite. Terry offers Claudia some comfort.

Plot[]

Callum has a nightmare of him using dark magic to free himself from Finnegrin's cabin by transforming his bonds into snakes. Rayla gasps as Aaravos stands with the corrupted Callum.

Stella wakes Callum and Sneezles up from their sleep before Rayla tells them that they have reached the Frozen Sea. They dismount their Shadowpaw so they can cross the frozen landscape without bearing too much weight on the ice. During their crossing, the ice starts to crack and causes the Shadowpaw to fall into the cold water. The Shadowpaw thrashes and inadvertently causes the group's supply to fall underwater as Callum and Rayla try to pull it out. Then the reins snap and the Shadowpaw sinks to the bottom, prompting Callum to cast "Mons Aqueous" to bring it back to the surface. The relieved Rayla hugs and comforts the Shadowpaw before she tells it to return to the Silvergrove and Ethari so it will not be in peril again. Rayla, Callum, Stella, and Sneezles then stand together as they watch the Shadowpaw's departure.

At the shores of the Sea of the Castout, Terry is sitting on a log and laying sticks out on the sand. He then turns around upon hearing a rustling sound from the forest behind him. With nothing of interest to be seen, Terry continues to lay sticks on the sand.

Back at the Frozen Sea, Callum, Rayla, Stella, and Sneezles resume their journey to the Star Scraper when they come across black ice, which is smoother and slipperier than regular ice. Rayla believes there is nothing to worry about before she begins to slip chaotically. Fortunately, Callum catches her before she can fall on the snow. Callum and Rayla gaze at each other and are about to lean in when Sneezles interrupts them by sneezing on Rayla's face. Rayla sarcastically thanks Sneezles before she and Callum link arms as they tread across the black ice together.

Meanwhile, at the Sea of the Castout, Terry uses his powers to lash some of the sticks together when an exhausted Claudia returns to him. Terry catches Claudia before she slumps to the ground.

Callum, Rayla, Stella, and Sneezles continue their trek across the Frozen Sea before approaching the shipwrecked Ray of Illumination. Callum offers to search the ship after losing their supplies, but Rayla tells him and Sneezles to stay outside so she and Stella can use their speed and agility to handle the ship's instability. Callum draws a picture of the Ray of Illumination in his sketchbook as he talks to Sneezles about the ship's inability to move, thus calling it the "Frozen Ship". Rayla and Stella explore the ship's interiors before entering the captain's cabin. Rayla opens a drawer and discovers a diary she is rather hesitant to open before Stella encourages her to do so since it might hold secrets of an untold danger. Rayla initially reads the diary with a male voice narrating before learning that it was written by a woman named Esmerelda Skall, the captain of the Ray of Illumination.

The sun is setting on the Sea of the Castout as Terry helps Claudia take a bath in the water. He uses a sponge to solemnly and gently sweep and scrub away the bruises, scars, and dirt on Claudia's body.

Inside the captain's cabin of the Ray of Illumination, Rayla lights a lamp as she continues to read Esmerelda's diary. Stella hugs the weeping Rayla as latter learns that Esmerelda spent her final days regretting of not being with her beloved ex-fiancée Conrad. Callum and Sneezles decide to enter the ship due to the growing cold and upon hearing Rayla's crying. Callum is dumbfound to discover Rayla has been reading instead of searching for supplies. Rayla assures Callum that everything is fine before agreeing that they must spend the night inside the Ray of Illumination despite its unstable nature.

Terry eventually finishes bathing Claudia and uses a wooden comb to brush her hair. He soon struggles to pull the comb out from Claudia's tangled locks until she offers him her knife so he can cut her long hair. Terry almost reluctantly accepts Claudia's knife before he uses it to cut her hair to a bob.

Inside Esmerelda's cabin, Callum plans to use a pile of loose planks as his blanket, which he refers to as a "planket". Rayla suggests to use the spell-blocking blanket wrapped around Aaravos's prison to keep warm, but Callum refuses due to his fear of Aaravos controlling him again. Callum awkwardly declines Rayla's offer in sharing her blanket before they gaze upon the starry skies. Callum starts to remember the poem his birth father Damian wrote before his passing. Rayla listens to Callum informing her about Damian living with a terrible breathing sickness his whole life and that it made him appreciate every breath and every moment, and that Sarai said he was the strongest person she ever knew. Rayla then thanks Callum for sharing the memories of his father with him before falling asleep. Sometime later, Rayla wakes up upon hearing Callum's shiver and witnessing him hugging himself tightly. Callum assures Rayla he is okay and brushes the cold aside, but she decides to share her blanket with him anyway. Stella and Sneezles can feel the tension between Callum and Rayla and agree to bring the pair closer together. Sneezles sneezes on Rayla's face to make her face Callum while Stella drags Callum's hand onto Rayla. Callum and Rayla soon wake up, relishing in their closeness before leaning in for a kiss. However, Callum pulls back and sits up before he solemnly reveals that he did dark magic again.

Claudia smiles at her new haircut as Terry presents her the wooden prosthetic leg he has been working on before attaching it to her left knee. Terry helps Claudia in standing up and watches with pride as her gait improves. Claudia and Terry share a heartwarming hug before sharing a passionate kiss under the starry skies.

Callum confesses to Rayla that he did dark magic to rescue her from Finnegrin and because he would do anything for her. Rayla advises Callum to do the right thing if he ever has to choose between her and the greater good. Callum accidentally steps through a rotten floorboard, causing the Ray of Illumination to tilt and the lamp in the cabin to shatter and set the ship ablaze. Callum, Rayla, Stella, and Sneezles decide to escape the burning ship, with Callum casting "Sagitta Venti" to blast a hole in the side of the ship. The group escapes before realizing that they left Aaravos's prison behind. Rayla rushes back into the flames with Callum, Stella, and Sneezles waiting outside anxiously. Rayla succeeds in dodging and weaving through the fire and heads for the exit with the prison as Callum pulls her out from the sinking ship. The group witnesses the Ray of Illumination collapsing into the icy water before Callum recalls Rayla advice about never sacrificing the greater good for one person no matter who it is before he promises her to kill him if Aaravos ever controls him again. Rayla begrudgingly promises Callum before they, Stella, and Sneezles resume their journey to the Star Scraper.

In the Katolis castle, Ezran is reading a book in his chambers during a stormy night when Opeli and the guards alert him of a ranting madman on the bridge. Ezran and Opeli walk to the bridge to find the humbled Viren demanding to see the king. Upon seeing Ezran, Viren bows before him and humbly proclaims to be his humble servant. When Viren confesses that he did not return to beg for mercy, Ezran commands the guards to arrest the former High Mage and confiscate the relic staff.

Trivia[]

  • As well as the setting of the episode, the episode's title is also a reference to the state of Callum and Rayla's relationship, which had been left in limbo since Rayla left to search for Viren and had yet to fully rekindle since her return to Callum's life.
  • Aaron Ehasz and Justin Richmond posted clues to this episode's title on Twitter by showing a poem about Esmerelda Skall and her journey through The Human Kingdoms and pictures of a frozen ship.[1]
  • As the Ray of Illumination burns and sinks to the bottom of the Frozen Sea, the flames damage its nameplate until it only shows "Rayllum", which is the portmanteau couple name of Rayla and Callum.
    • Callum's monologue about how sad it is that the ship is not going anywhere is a tongue in cheek reference to how fans thought that his and Rayla's relationship had been stagnant for the last few seasons.
