The episode begins in the rain with Rayla helping a weak Callum walk up a mountain. Bait walks in front of them, Ezran and Zym follow them closely
Rayla Come on. We've gotta keep moving. We're so close to the border. We could be in Xadia in just a few hours.
Ezran I know we're close, Rayla, but Callum's not doing well.
Rayla That's his own fault for messing with dark magic.
Callum Mmm-hmm. Yes, you're right. We must move onward. [He falls and Rayla and Ezran help him up.] I'm okay. I just need to rest my eyes while we walk.
He closes his eyes which are covered in dark circles. Ezran looks worried at Rayla.
Scene Change
In the clearing, Claudia kneels besides Soren.
Soren I don't feel anything.
Claudia Can you feel it when I do this?
Soren No, what are you doing?
Claudia I'm pinching you, Soren.
Soren Well, that's just rude.
Claudia Hold on. I'll have you back on your feet in no time. [She grabs a flower from her bag and rips off the petals and puts them on Soren's eyes. She grabs a vial of green liquid.] And the last step has just a tad of grasshopper goop. [She pours it into her hand with some of the petals.]
Soren Oh, do we really have to... [He gags on the goop Claudia puts in his mouth.]
Claudia sprinkles a blue powder onto Soren's body and begins chanting.
Claudia Sbmil eseht ot efil gnirb. (Bring life to these limbs.)
As she raises her hands, the powder glows and swirls around. She conjures blue energy on her hand. As it turns purple the petals on Soren's eyes evaporate. He sees the powder fade away.
Soren Well, that was super pretty, but I still can't move.
Claudia You can't? But that should have... Hold on. I must have something. [She empties her bag and inspects its content.] Ugh, that's all I have for healing. [She turns to three soldiers] Well, don't just stand there! Help me get him back to town. We need to find a doctor.
Claudia and the soldiers pick Soren up.
Scene Change
Ezran follows Rayla as she helps a drooping Callum into the cliffside cave. She lays him down resting his head on a bag.
Callum I'm so uncomfortable.
Rayla Uncomfortable with your choice to use dark magic, perhaps?
Ezran Rayla! [He adjusts Callum's head.] Is that any better?
Closing in on Callum's purple eyelids.
Callum So uncomfortable. [His voice echoing] I'm so uncomfortable!
In a dream sequence, Callum wakes up on a giant pile of large keys without the purple eyelids. He grabs a few keys in his hand and looks at them closely. As he drops them back on the pile, a red glow emanates from underneath.
Callum [Gasps.] Something's down there.
He trusts his hand into the keys and moves it around. He pulls out the Key of Aaravos, it's bottom side glowing red. Slowly turning the cube seeing its glowing side, he finds himself looking at a caduceus like rune which adorns Claudia's dark magic spell book. He shuts his eyes
Callum No!
He hurls the cube ahead. A cloaked figure with its back to Callum catches the cube without looking. Callum stares at the figure standing ahead.
Scene Change
At Katolis Castle, Opeli stands with other Council members in the throne room. The doors open and Marcos walkes in, he stops respectfully before Opeli.
Marcos We've searched everywhere. Lord Viren is nowhere to be found.
Opeli Keep looking. And when you do find him, be ready for anything. Do not underestimate him.
Marcos nods.
Scene Change
In his secret chamber, Viren is standing in front of the Magic Mirror with the magical caterpillar on his ear. Viren stares at a hooded Aaravos in the mirror.
Viren Who are you?
Aaravos My name would mean nothing to you.
Viren [Sighs.] Where are you?
Aaravos I don't know.
Viren Don't lie to me.
Aaravos I'm not lying. I never lie.
Viren [Sighs.] I found this mirror in the lair of the Dragon King. This mirror meant something to him. You meant something to him.
Aaravos Perhaps. Tell me what you need, and I will help you.
Viren I need your name.
Bowing his head slightly Aaravos takes off his hood, revealing two long horns rising from his white hair.
Aaravos Aaravos.
Smiling smugly, Viren pulls the caterpillar off his ear, it's tiny legs wriggle as he drops it in a glass jar. Closing the jar with a cork in places it on a table and heads off. Aaravos watches him leave with a faint smile.
Scene Change
Sitting on the pile of keys, Callum stares at the cloaked figure and stands and slides down. He slowly approaches the figure. With his brow furrowed, Callum stops behind the figure who holds the glowing cube against its chest.
Callum Who are you?
In the cave, Callum squirms with his forehead covered in sweat. Ezran dabs his forehead.
Callum Who... who are you?
Rayla He's delirious.
Ezran It's getting worse.
As a few rocks tumble outside the cave, Rayla signals Ezran to keep quiet then unfirls her swords.
Rayla Who's there? Show yourself, or I'll greet you with my pointy friends.
Corvus faces her wielding his chain attached hook he furrows his eyes.
Rayla You.
As he looks to the side. As he sees Ezran he gasps and lowers his weapon.
Corvus I'm not here to fight. My name is Corvus. Your Aunt Amaya sent me.
As Corvus raises his hands, Rayla looks at Ezran who gives her a nod. She lowers her blades and lets Corvus walk past her, keeping an eye on him. Corvus bows in front of Ezran, with one hand on his chest.
Corvus I am here to serve the king. King Ezran.
Gazing at Ezran, his eyes go wide.
Scene Change

In the village, smoke rises from a few buildings inside the walls. Claudia is sitting in a corner of the hospital building, looking at Soren who is covered in bandages. A nurse walks away from his bed and closes the curtains around it, then she approaches Claudia.

Claudia Well? How long will it take for him to get better?
Female nurse He's not going to get better.
Claudia What?
Female nurse He won't die. He's lucky to have survived a direct attack from a dragon. But he's never going to walk again.
Claudia gapes at her then steps away crossing her arms as she looks off worried.
Female nurse I haven't told him yet.
Claudia Don't. I'll tell him. He should hear it from me.
Scene Change
At the cave, Ezran looks at Corvus.
Ezran But I'm not the king. I'm just a prince. My dad is... Wait. That's not what you're saying. He isn't...
Rayla steps toward Ezran but he back away.
Ezran -No! No, no, no!
Rayla Ezran, it's going to be okay.
Ezran You knew? I'm an idiot! I should have figured it out. When we met you, you had two of those assassiny ribbony things, but one of them came off that night.
Rayla That's right. That must have been when he fell.
Ezran "Fell"?
Rayla Yes.
Ezran "Fell"? He didn't fall, Rayla. He didn't trip and land on the ground. He got killed!
Rayla looks away, tears streaming down her face.
Ezran [gasps.] Callum... does he know yet?
Rayla He knows.
Ezran I'm going for a walk.
Corvus I can't let you go alone.
Ezran If I am the king, then you have to let me go.
Rayla You're not my king. But you are my friend, and I'm coming with you.
Ezran [sighs.] Rayla, please. Just let me go be alone. Please.
Ezran walks away from the cave. Bait groans and Zym yips, then leaps past Bait and starts to follow Ezran. Bait gently bites Zym's tail to hold him back. They stare sadly after Ezran, who wipes his tears are he walks away.
Scene Change
In Katolis castle, Viren strolls down the hallway, then he ducks behind a entryway as two guards walk past. Later he enters the castles vast sunlit library where a woman sits at a desk immersed in a book. Viren walks past a shelf looking at the covers. He grabs a scroll and two books from the shelves. Later he places a stack of books and scrolls on a desk and flips through a tome.
Viren Let's see here. Aaravos... Aaravos... Aaravos! There!
The words on the page start dissolving.
Viren What? What's going on here?
He grabs another book and opens it.
Viren Aaravos.
The name of the elf together with the other words and picture dissolve again. Viren opens a scroll and the same happens again. All pages of the books and scrolls turn completely black as the ink spreads over them.
Viren What's happening?
Librarian Shh! You're in a library.
Viren -Yes, I'm quite aware I'm in a.
Librarian Shh!
Scene Change
In his dream, Callum frowns from behind the cloaked figure. The figure turns and walk toward him with the cube in hand. The figure pulls down his hood revealing him to be Callum as well. Callum's gaw drops.
Cloaked Callum Callum, don't be frightened.
Callum I'm not, I'm just...
Both Callum's ... confused.
Cloaked Callum Of course you are. You tried dark magic for the first time. No one expects that to be easy.
Callum But that's the thing. It was easy. Too easy. Even though I know it's wrong.
Cloaked Callum But is it really so wrong?
Callum Yes.
Cloaked Callum Is it, though?
Callum Yes.
Cloaked Callum Is it?
Callum Yes! [His voice echoing]
Cloaked Callum Callum, look at me. You're looking at yourself. -You need to accept your destiny.
Callum I can't do that.
Cloaked Callum You're a human. You weren't born with an Arcanum to do primal magic, but you were born to do magic. The kind of magic humans can do. You can have unlimited power.
All sides of the cube turn into the red dark magic rune.
Cloaked Callum And you can choose what to do with that power! You can make a real difference in the world. All you need to do now is accept it. Your destiny is already written.
Scene Change
In the hospital, Soren gazes of sorrowfully, his bare chest covered in bandages and two splints fixing his head in place. Claudia stops by the curtains. Collecting herself she walks over to the bed and gently touches Soren's shoulder, then sits down.
Claudia Hey, Sor-Sor. All the people in town are talking about you. About how you faced the dragon and saved the town. Everyone's calling you a hero.
Soren Saved them from a problem I caused, maybe. Is that what heroes do?
Claudia turns away briefly.
Claudia So I... I talked to the doctor. And I guess they did some tests...
Soren I already know.
Claudia What?
Soren I can't move. I can't walk. And it's not going to get better.
Soren looks out the window and sees two children walk by and laugh.
Soren You know what? It's for the best. I'm glad I can't move.
Claudia What are you talking about? Soren, why would you say that?
Soren Before we left, Dad gave me a secret mission.
Claudia He did?
Soren I was confused, and I didn't want to do it, but... I do want Dad to love me and be proud of me.
Claudia wipes Soren's tears.
Claudia He is proud of you, no matter what.
Soren Dad is so smart, so I figured there must be a good reason.
Claudia Soren, what did Dad ask you to do?
Soren Kill the princes.
Claudia Kill them? [She scoffs] No. No. No, that can't be right. You must have misunderstood.
Soren Now I can't do anything terrible, because... now I can't do anything.
Scene Change
In Callum's dream, the cloaked version of himself offers him the cube.
Cloaked Callum Accept your destiny.
Callum hesitantly reaches for the cube, the dark magic runes still glowing red.
Harrow Callum.
Harrow sits chained to his throne.
Harrow You are free. You are free from both the past and the future. Nothing is written in stone. Fate is a lie. You are free!
The cloaked Callum raises the cube.
Cloaked Callum Look inside yourself, Callum. This is your destiny. You can't deny it.
Callum reaches of the cube again. His eyes growing wide as his fingers approach it. Glancing up, Callum sees his doubles face flicker for an instant, adopting an evil visage with gray skin and black eyes. Callum withdraws his hand frowning.
Callum No! I get to choose who I want to be.
Cloaked Callum Your destiny is already written!
Callum No! Destiny is a book you write yourself!
The cloaked Callum lowers his head and the red glow fades from the dark magic runes on the cube. He drops the cube and it falls through a swirling red vortex that vanishes. Callum watches purple cracks spread on his cloaked doubles body. Light bursts out of the cracks and the double crumbles into pieces. Callum and Harrow look on as a sudden gust of wind blows the debris away.
Callum [exhales heavily] That was horrifying.
Callum looks over at Harrow.
Harrow It's your dream, kid.
Harrow's throne slides away.
At the cave, Bait, Zym and Rayla sit beside the sleeping Callum while Corvus paces around restlessly.
Corvus The king is missing.
Rayla He's not missing. He just went for a walk.
Corvus And he hasn't returned, and we don't know where he is.
Rayla Right...
Corvus That is the definition of missing!
Rayla Yeah. Yeah, you're right. He's missing.
Corvus You shouldn't have let him go. We need to find him.
Rayla Aren't you a tracker? Isn't this your whole job?
Corvus Yes. I shall bring the king back safely. You have my word.
He bows to Rayla then dashes away.
Rayla Ooh, I have his word.
Bait [grunts]
Scene Change.
Claudia paces besides Soren's bed.
Soren It's okay, Clauds. I'm relieved, actually. I'm... I'm free to do what I want, with no expectations from Dad or... or anyone.
Claudia So, what are you gonna do with this newfound... freedom?
Soren I've been thinking about that for the last ten minutes, and I've decided I'm going to reinvent myself. I'm gonna be a poet, Claudia!
Claudia [laughs] You're not joking?
Soren I'm going to be a poet, and people will come hear my poems. They'll come visit me, and we'll drink some kind of... soothing tea. And then... and then, I'll say my latest poems to them.
Claudia [sighs] Soren, are you sure?
Soren I already have my first poem. It's a haiku. Just, uh, tell me when you're ready.
Claudia [sighs] Um... okay. Ready.
Soren [inhales deeply] Dragon smash boy. Say the good words now. They light the hearts of other people.
Claudia counts on her fingers
Soren Do you like it? I'm inspiring, right?
Claudia No, Soren, no. That was a terrible poem. And it... it's not even a haiku! Oh... I can't leave you like this. There has to be something.
Opening a cabinet, she picks two liquid filled vials and throws them away. She pulls out a large jar and peeks into it then smashes it on the ground. She upturns the cabinet and darts to another one while Soren's gaze follows her. As she trows more items the nurse arrives together with a man.
Female nurse You need to calm down.
Claudia No, I don't. You need to... calm up! You need to help him!
Female nurse This is a hospital. Miss, we're going to have to assist you out of here.
Claudia He can't be like this. He can't even count syllables!
They drag her away and throw her out, raising her head from the ground, she blows a lock of hair from her forehead.
Scene Change
Looking over ocean waves, Callum strolls along a dark shore. He looks around with strong wind buffening his hair and clothes. Captain Villads appears beside him.
Villads Ahoy, Callum! I hear ye be needing a boat.
Callum glances around curiously.
Callum Am I be needing a boat?
Villads You am! For yer voyage! Into yer own heart and mind.
They stand on the Ruthless sailing on the ocean.
Callum Let's hope the weather be nice there.
Later lightning flashes in the sky and it starts to rain. Callum clutches a railing on the rocking ship
Callum [Screams]
Villads steers the ship.
Villads [laughing maniacally] Hoist the mainsail!
Callum What? I don't know how to hoist any sails.
Villads It's yer journey. You be the sail, and I'll hoist ye! Find the wind, boy! Be like a wing!
Villads hoids Callum up by his arms, who turns into the main sail of the Ruthless. Callum glances down and sees his body billowing in the wind. Berto flies overhead.
Berto I have questions. [squawk]
Scene Change
Corvus walks through a forest peering around. He examines a broken twig on a bush, then rubs his fingers together. His eyes widen as he spots a set of footprints on the ground. He sees them leading into a open area.
Corvus You're making this easy for me, young King!
Corvus smiles and follows the footprints which abruptly end at a set of large tracks running adjacent to them. Corvus crouches and touches one of the new prints.
Corvus Oh, no. This can't be happening.
Scene Change
In Katolis castle, Viren walks down a dark passage. He barges into the room with the magic mirror and faces it.
Viren What's going on? Every time I found a mention of you in an ancient scroll or tome, the entire passage disappeared as soon as I looked! [sighs] What game are you playing?
Aaravos glances up from a book and notices him. Setting the book aside he steps up to the mirror. With a smile he brushes his ear then gestures at Viren's jar holding the magical caterpillar. Rolling his eyes, Viren picks up the jar and opens it. He takes out the caterpillar and sets it on his ear.
Viren Ugh! [sighs] Why should I trust you?
Aaravos You shouldn't... yet.
Scene Change
On the cliffside, Corvus shuffles towards the cave, his head bowed. Swallowing hard, he takes a few more steps and stops, looking at Rayla who regards Callum worriedly. Corvus clears his throat and Rayla looks at him and walks over.
Rayla What's wrong? What happened? Did you lose his trail?
Corvus No. It's worse than that.
Rayla What do you mean?
Corvus King Ezran's trail ends very clearly, very badly. His footprints are replaced by banther tracks. The king's been eaten by a banther!
Rayla [She gasps, then laughs] Great job. You've lost the King of Katolis.
Corvus This isn't funny. Why are you laughing?
Rayla [sighs] Your king happens to be a very special boy. He can talk to animals. So if there are banther tracks, it means Ezran caught a ride on the banther, not in the banther. [laughs]
As she heads off, Corvus spreads his hand quizzically.
Scene Change
Claudia ambles through the town.
Claudia Okay, Claudia, calm down. Everything's going to be okay. Just... say your calming mantra. [sighs] There is no synonym for cinnamon. There is no synonym for cinnamon. There is no synonym for cinnamon. There is no synonym for cinnamon. There is no... [gasps]
She startles as a box falls at the mouth of an ally. She peers into the dark street. A creature can be heared growling. A pair of yellow eyes open in the shadows as a giant black banther steps toward her snarling. Backing away, Claudia looks up and sees Ezran sitting on the back of the banther.
Claudia Erzan?
Ezran Hi, Claudia.
Scene Change
At the cave, Callum squirms in his sleep. Rayla glares at him.
Rayla You messed with something you shouldn't have messed with, and now you're paying the price.
Callum Help! Help.
Rayla You'll get through this.
Callum [groans]
Rayla You big dumb human.
She wipes his face and gazes at him in concern.
In his dream, the Ruthless rocks violently on the stormy sea as Callum stumbles along its deck. He grabs the wildly spinning steering wheel and holds it steady as the ships sails over roiling waters. As lightning flashes in the sky the view rises further up and stormy clouds become enclosed in the Primal stone. Callum stands with the primal stone in his hand looking at it. Then he smashes the primal stone and the view feezes. The scene reverses and the view pushes into the primal stone where floating remains of the Ruthless floating in the sea. Callum holds on to a barrel. He looks up to see Villads also floating holding onto a wooden box.
Villads Your conscience is a messy place, boyo!
Berto [caws]
A giant Berto swoops down and picks Villads out of the water.
Villads [laughs] Villads out!
Berto I'm huge!
Staring after the bird, Callum loses his grip on the barrel and sinks into the water. Trailing bubbles, he gazes at the surface of the ocean as he recedes into it's dark dept. He releases his breath and goes still as he sinks his eyes closed. In the cave he frowns and convulses in his sleep.
Callum [gasps]
Rayla Callum? Are you okay? Callum!
In the dream, Callum sinks into the murky depth.
Fades to credits.
