Team Zym is the name used to refer to Callum and his companions during their journey to restore peace to the Human Kingdoms and Xadia, and to stop the Archmage Aaravos from returning to the world. The team was named after Azymondias's nickname, "Zym", and was originally composed of Callum, Ezran, Rayla, and Bait. They were later joined by Azymondias, Soren, Stella, Corvus, Sneezles, Hat, Jellybug, Aanya, Pyrrah, Terry, Aaron and Sam, as well as a few temporary members who supported them on their journey.

History
The egg is discovered unharmed
Team Zym first formed after Rayla had infiltrated the castle of Katolis on a mission to assassinate both King Harrow and Prince Ezran in an act of revenge for the murder of the Dragon King Avizandum that was executed by the leaders of Katolis. While in the castle, she chased Callum, then later also Ezran and Bait, into a hidden chamber within the castle dungeon, where the four of them discovered the unharmed egg of the Dragon Prince which had previously been believed to have been destroyed by humankind.[1] Knowing that the egg could serve as an olive branch to re-establish peace between the Human Kingdoms and Xadia, the four of them decided to group up after having failed to convince Rayla's leader, Runaan, to acknowledge the egg and stop the assassination attempt on the princes' father.[3]
After leaving the castle, Team Zym made it their life's mission to return the egg of the Dragon Prince to its mother, the Dragon Queen Zubeia. They traveled to the Banther Lodge to acquire a cube that Callum believed could help them in their journey. While retrieving the cube, Team Zym ran into the princes' aunt Amaya, her translator Gren, and the Standing Battalion, though they were able to not reveal their intentions. Following a brief battle, Team Zym managed to escape into a nearby river, unaware that Amaya had sent her best tracker Corvus to tail them from afar.[4]
Team Zym continued their journey to Xadia following their encounter with a leviathan that forced them to abandon their boat.[5] Rayla was ambushed by Corvus and got into a brief scuffle with him that went unnoticed by Callum and Ezran. Despite emerging victorious, Rayla grew anxious about Corvus's return and chose to lead Team Zym up a snowy mountain. However, Bait unintentionally triggered an avalanche and forced all of them to land on a frozen lake. As the ice cracked, Rayla accidentally dropped the egg into the freezing water, forcing Ezran to dive in to retrieve it. Although Ezran was successful, they noticed the egg's light was fading.[6]
Team Zym decided to enter a nearby town to see if someone could help them in healing the egg. They met a doctor who informed them about a miracle involving a girl named Ellis and her pet wolf Ava. Ellis revealed that Ava's missing leg was restored by a "miracle healer" living in the Cursed Caldera, which motivated Team Zym to venture there.[7] With Ellis and Ava as their guides, Team Zym trekked to the Cursed Caldera and worked together in taking down a giant worm-like monster.[8] Upon meeting the "miracle healer", they discovered that she was actually a Moonshadow Elf mage named Lujanne, who created illusions to protect the Moon Nexus. Lujanne revealed that they must hatch the egg of the Dragon Prince in order to save it, but the lack of storms would make it impossible. Upon learning this information, Callum chose to destroy his Sky Primal Stone to release the storm contained inside it, successfully hatching Azymondias out from the egg. Azymondias, who was given the nickname "Zym", sensed Rayla's constricting binding and tore it off her hand, allowing the group to celebrate as wisps sent by Claudia locate their whereabouts.[9]
Lujanne allowed Team Zym to stay at the Moon Nexus for several days before Soren and Claudia arrived to secretly bring Azymondias back to their father Viren.[10] After Claudia revealed Harrow's death to Callum, he became worried on how Ezran would take the news.[11] Rayla's growing suspicion on Soren and Claudia prompted her to create a plan with Team Zym to expose their true intentions. When Soren and Claudia attempted to bring Callum, Ezran, and Zym back to Katolis, Ellis used a moonstone to reveal the illusions that Team Zym had set up as they flew away on the back of Lujanne's Moon Phoenix Phoe-Phoe. Corvus arrived just in time to distract Soren and Claudia, allowing Team Zym to escape into the night.[12]
Phoe-Phoe carried Team Zym through the sky until she was forced to return to the Moon Nexus to restore her strength. Team Zym needed to cross a vast bay in order to get to Xadia, so they hired the blind captain of the ship The Ruthless named Villads and his pet parrot Berto to help them.[13] As they sailed across the bay, Callum chose to read the letter that Harrow gave him on the day before his death.[14] Upon reaching the other side of the bay, Team Zym noticed the shadow of Pyrrah the Fire Dragon gliding across the clouds.[15]
Team Zym was preparing to cross the Border and enter Xadia when they witnessed Pyrrah attacking a nearby town. After Claudia shot Pyrrah down with a ballista imbued with dark magic, Team Zym chose to protect the downed dragon. When there was no other option left, Callum resorted into performing dark magic to free Pyrrah from her bonds. The confrontation, however, rendered Callum unconscious and Soren paralyzed.[16] Team Zym then took Callum into their cave as Corvus arrived and revealed Harrow's death to Ezran. Overwhelmed with grief, Ezran chose to take a walk in the forest alone with Corvus following him long afterward, leaving Rayla, Bait, and Zym to watch over Callum.[17] Callum eventually recovered from his dark magic-induced fever after understanding the arcanum of the Sky, which allowed him to perform Sky magic without any assistance. Ezran soon returned to the group and chose to return to Katolis with Bait and Corvus so that he could take his rightful place as king, which left Rayla and Callum to bring Zym back to Zubeia on their own. While crossing the treacherous Moonstone Path, Ezran sensed Zym's distress and gave the dragonling a telepathic encouragement to fly and help Rayla and Callum cross into Xadia safely.[18]
Shortly after entering Xadia, Rayla, Callum, and Zym found their path blocked by Sol Regem, a blind Archdragon of the Sun and the former King of the Dragons who held a deep grudge against humanity and dark magic. Despite their attempts to reason with him, Sol Regem decided to kill Team Zym upon sensing remnants of dark magic in Callum's body. Rayla and Callum managed to trap Sol Regem under an arch, allowing them and Zym to continue their journey.[19] Team Zym soon trekked through the Moonshadow Forest, with Callum being astonished that his cube reacted to everything around it.[20] As Rayla took Callum and Zym to her home in the Silvergrove, she was horrified that she had been ghosted by the other Moonshadow Elves for abandoning her mission. However, Runaan's husband Ethari was able to understand Rayla's dilemma and summoned his Shadowpaw and Runaan's Moonstrider to get her, Callum, and Zym to the Storm Spire since Zubeia was dying from her grief.[21]
As Team Zym continued to ride through the Moonshadow Forest, they were intercepted by a Skywing Elf named Nyx who offered to help them in crossing the Midnight Desert with her Ambler. Rayla reluctantly accepted Nyx's aid and they wandered through the Midnight Desert until they had reached an oasis. While Callum and Rayla argued about their beliefs and feelings for one another, Nyx used the opportunity to take Zym to the Storm Spire herself.[22] Upon learning Nyx's con and witnessing Runaan's Moonstrider being bitten by a Soulfang Serpent, Callum and Rayla mounted Ethari's Shadowpaw and pursued Nyx after the sun came up. They eventually caught up to Nyx when Zym chose to electrocute the Skywing Elf and forced them to crash into the sand. Soulfang Serpents soon surround the injured Nyx as Callum and Rayla chose to bring her back to her Ambler. Realizing that they had fallen for one another, Callum and Rayla shared a passionate kiss as the Ambler resumed its march through the Midnight Desert.[23] Team Zym eventually reached the end of the Midnight Desert and journeyed to the base of the Storm Spire where the petrified corpse of Avizandum stood. They were immediately reunited with Ezran and Bait who arrived on Phoe-Phoe after Viren instigated a coup and usurped Katolis's throne with the aid of Kasef and Saleer. The exhausted Phoe-Phoe perished after exerting herself and left a "ghost feather" behind for Team Zym so that she could begin her cycle of rebirth.[24]
Team Zym was climbing the Storm Spire when they came across a gate with an elven writing that warned them to "Prepare to draw your last breath". The thin air surrounding the Storm Spire started to take its toll on the group when Pyrrah helped them in performing a breathing spell that restored their strength. By nightfall, Team Zym was at the entrance of the Storm Spire where they were greeted by the Skywing Elf mage Ibis.[25] Ibis revealed to them that Zubeia had not awakened from her slumber for 10 days and Team Zym was in distraught that they could not wake her up. By the next day, Soren arrived at the Storm Spire and warned everyone that Viren intended to lay siege on the Storm Spire with his enhanced army following their successful attack on the Sunfire Elf capital Lux Aurea. After listening to Soren's speech about Viren's evil and learning that Rayla's parents, Tiadrin and Lain, fought to the end to protect Zym's egg, Team Zym chose to make their stand in the Storm Spire. They were soon joined by Amaya, Janai, and the other Sunfire Elves who wished to protect Zubeia. Ezran then flew off with Pyrrah and Ibis to call for more help.[26] While Rayla and Bait stayed inside to guard Zym and Zubeia, Callum, Soren, Amaya, and Sunfire Elves held their ground against Viren's soldiers as Ezran, Pyrrah, and Ibis returned with a pack of Fire Dragons. However, Viren's army was slowly overwhelming the defenders when Queen Aanya arrived with reinforcements from Katolis and Duren. However, the battle was merely a distraction for Viren to sneak into the Storm Spire. When Rayla tackled Viren off the Storm Spire, Callum dove down and successfully conjured wings to rescue Rayla, leaving Viren to fall to his death. Team Zym and their allies regrouped inside the Storm Spire to witness Zubeia awakening from her sleep and reunite with Zym.[27]
Team Zym and their allies gather as Zubeia reunites with Azymondias
Following the battle, Team Zym partially separated after Zym returned to live with his mother at the Storm Spire and would instead pay visits to Katolis.[28] During this time, Rayla stayed at Katolis for an unknown amount of time. The remaining members of Team Zym, now including Soren, departed to the Moon Nexus shortly before Callum's birthday, where they witnessed the rebirth of Phoe-Phoe. As Rayla was still haunted by losing her family without closure, and not knowing whether Viren had truly perished, she eventually left her friends behind on the day of Callum's birthday to take off on a journey to find answers for her pained mind.[29]
Over the two years that followed, each member of Team Zym followed their own goals and underwent personal growth. Exactly two years later (2 AZ), Rayla made a sudden return on the night of Callum's birthday, bringing along Stella.[30] Despite failing to reconnect with Callum,[31] she was embraced as a returning team member by Ezran,[32] who invited her to come along when Team Zym set out on their next journey. After witnessing the dying message of Ibis, which warned them of the return of the "Fallen Star", the team set out to travel to the Storm Spire to find out about the history and current circumstances surrounding their new enemy: Aaravos.[33]
Zubeia informed Team Zym about Aaravos's history before arriving at the Storm Spire and mourned Ibis's death. They then used Avizandum's Looking Glass to meet Aaravos for the first time, and the Startouch Elf temporarily possessed Callum to announce his impending return before shattering the mirror.[33] After holding a funeral for Ibis, Team Zym deduced that Claudia was the one who intended to free Aaravos from his prison and journeyed to Umber Tor to meet Rex Igneous, the Archdragon of the Earth who possessed the knowledge on the prison's location. However, Zubeia forbade Zym on their journey due to the danger Rex posed to him. When they arrived at Umber Tor, they were shocked to find a landslide obstructing the main entrance, which forced them to take the secret entrance in the Drakewood. Zubeia then returned to the Storm Spire to wait for Team Zym's return. As Team Zym trekked through the Drakewood, Soren got himself captured by Earthblood Elves for helping a dragon he would name Squeaky.[34] While looking for Soren, the group was reunited with Zym who had snuck out the Storm Spire. They then befriended a young Earthblood Elf named N'than who gladly became their guide in their journey into Umber Tor.[35]
With N'than's help, Team Zym was able to survive the perils of Umber Tor and enter the lair of Rex Igneous.[36] After learning that Rex and Avizandum were rivals, Rayla used a Moon Opal to disguise Zym as a dog. The group then encountered Rex Igneous and offered them gifts that were meaningful to them, but Rex was unimpressed since he had grown bored of tributes that had little to no use for him. However, he was impressed by Barius's brown sludge tart and allowed Team Zym to state their cause. When Team Zym revealed that they were looking for Aaravos's prison, Rex refused to help them and was angered that they had brought Avizandum and Zubeia's son with them. Rex was soon shocked to learn that Avizandum was killed and revealed that he was given a map to Aaravos's prison. Claudia soon arrived in the lair with her group and used a sleeping spell that put most of Team Zym to sleep.[37]
As Claudia and her Earthblood Elf boyfriend Terry acquired the map from Rex Igneous, Zym and the captured Soren wake Rayla up. Rayla decided to use her blade to stab Rex and awaken him in a fit of rage that broke the sleeping spell on everyone else. Realizing that Viren was alive, Rayla and Stella left their friends to hunt him down. Angered by what happened, Rex viewed everyone as his enemies and chased Team Zym out from Umber Tor. While Rayla held Terry hostage, Claudia offered to trade him with the coined souls of Runaan, Tiadrin, and Lain. Rayla was forced to let Terry go, only to tearfully discover that the coins were illusions. However, Terry called Claudia's cruelty out, which convinced the young mage to give Rayla the real coins that contained her family. When Rex Igneous prepared to kill Team Zym at the entrance of Umber Tor, Zubeia arrived and intimidated Rex into retreating back to his lair. Rayla and Stella soon emerged from the rubbles and shared an embrace with Callum and the rest of the group.[38]
After the escape from Umber Tor, Team Zym split up into two groups: Callum, Rayla, Bait, and Stella returned to Katolis with the hopes of learning more about Aaravos in the library of Katolis, while Ezran, Zym, Soren, Corvus, and Zubeia met with Domina Profundis, the Archdragon of the Ocean who possessed the knowledge on the prison's true nature.[39] Callum's group eventually decided to journey to the Great Bookery of Lux Aurea that housed the books and scrolls dedicated to Startouch Elves[40] as Ezran's group beseeched the dragons of Xadia to help them in locating Claudia and her group.[41]
Callum's group was then accompanied by Amaya, Gren, and Kazi during their mission in the Great Bookery, who helped them discover the existence of the Nova Blade, a sword that possessed the power to kill Startouch Elves. When corrupted Banthers began to swarm the Great Bookery, Zubeia rescued and reunited Team Zym while Corvus, Amaya, Gren, and Kazi returned to the Sunfire Elf camp.[42] Following a discussion of their next move, Zubeia agreed to help Team Zym in visiting Akiyu, the Tidebound Elf Archmage who helped in building Aaravos's prison. Zubeia decided to return to the Storm Spire to regain her strength and kept most of Team Zym in the dark about the wound she sustained in the Great Bookery. After Akiyu revealed that Aaravos's prison was located in the middle of the Sea of the Castout, Team Zym waited for Zubeia to pick them up.[43] Upon realizing that Zubeia could not rendezvous with them, Rayla opted to take Team Zym to Scumport, an island town ruled by the Tidebound Elf Finnegrin, that could provide them a ship to sail to the Sea of the Castout. It was at Scumport where Team Zym reunited with Villads, Berto, and Nyx, who agreed to help them in their journey after rescuing Sneezles, Hat, and Jellybug, three baby Glow Toads that were in the possession of Finnegrin.[44]
Team Zym sailed to the Sea of the Castout aboard The Ruthless before they were pursued and captured by the vengeful Finnegrin on Sea Legs.[45] Finnegrin attempted to persuade Team Zym in helping him in his war against Domina Profundis, but he resorted into killing them when they refused to cooperate. However, Soren managed to convince Elmer, Finnegrin's bodyguard, to not follow someone so cruel and controlling. Elmer then tossed Finnegrin into the mouth of the leviathan they lured in before he freed Team Zym from their bonds as they reached the Sea of the Castout.[46] Using the knowledge that they gained from Domina Profundis and Akiyu, Team Zym was able to locate and secure Aaravos's prison after they defeated Claudia in a fearsome underwater battle.[47]
After retrieving Aaravos's prison, Team Zym returned to Katolis and debated on what must be done with it. At the same time, Zym became concerned about Zubeia's whereabouts. The team agreed to split into three groups: Callum, Rayla, Stella, and Sneezles head to the Star Scraper where they could learn more about Startouch Elves from the Celestial Elves. Zym, Soren, Hat, Corvus, and Pyrrah flew to the Storm Spire to learn what happened to Zubeia. Ezran, Bait, and Jellybug remained in Katolis to protect the decoy prison Barius created.[48] Zym's group returned to Katolis after learning that the Earthblood Elf mage Mukho and the Mushpals were protecting and caring for the weakened Zubeia on Fungi Lane.[49] Callum's group journeyed across the Frozen Sea after sending their Shadowpaw back to the Silvergrove and Ethari, while Ezran's group imprisoned Viren in the dungeon after he returned to Katolis.[50]
While Zym's group reunite with Ezran's group in Katolis, Callum's group reach the Star Scraper, where the Celestial Elves believe that they are the Chosen Two prophesied to return the moonless nights by ending an Ice Behemoth's blizzards that started since the death of Luna Tenebris, the Archdragon of the Moon and the former Queen of the Dragons. Callum's group also learned that killing Aaravos was deemed impossible due to the Startouch Elves' immortal nature.[51] Callum's group then head out to defeat the Ice Behemoth before learning that the creature was actually Esmeray, Luna Tenebris's loyal and beloved companion who inadvertently created blizzards near the Star Scraper while mourning on moonless nights. Rayla helped Esmeray move on, ending the blizzards and returning the moonless nights to the Celestial Elves, who gifted them the Corona of the Heavens, which held the three Quasar Diamonds that they needed to free Rayla's family.[52] The Celestial Elves agreed to keep Aaravos's prison safe in the Star Scraper before helping Callum in cleansing the dark magic within him through the "Star-Truth" ritual, which helped rekindle his romance with Rayla. However, Callum's group was unaware that they accidentally brought the decoy prison instead of the real one.[53]
Callum's group flew to the Moon Nexus to begin their new quest of freeing Rayla's family while Ezran, Bait, Zym, and Corvus journeyed to the Sunfire Elf camp to attend Amaya and Janai's wedding. However, the celebration was put to a halt when Janai's banished brother, Karim, decided to attack with his followers. Ezran attempted to parley for peace with Karim before realizing that the latter intended to unleash Sol Regem on Janai's army. Zym, Corvus, and Aanya helped Ezran escape as Janai and Amaya led their army into battle against Karim's followers. Despite the victory against Karim, Aaravos has possessed Pharos's body and manipulated Sol Regem into attacking Katolis instead.[54] Soren ordered the evacuation of Hat, Jellybug, and the citizens of Katolis before freeing Viren so he could cast a grievous spell that would shield the people from Sol Regem's fire, at the cost of his own life. Meanwhile, Callum's group arrived at the Moon Nexus where Lujanne discovered that one of the Quasar Diamonds is a disguised normal purple rock. This meant that Callum and Rayla could only free two of the three souls trapped in Viren's coins.[55] Callum and Rayla chose to free Runaan, allowing Tiadrin and Lain to pass on peacefully. Callum and Ezran were devastated when they learned about Sol Regem's attack on Katolis.[56]
Team Zym reunited in Katolis following Sol Regem's attack, where they learned about the Archdragon's actions and demise. A furious Ezran recognized Runaan as his father's killer and had the Moonshadow Elf arrested, which started to create tension within Team Zym.[57] Ezran then led Team Zym and the people of Katolis in creating a temporary headquarters at the Banther Lodge. However, Team Zym grew divided over what must be done about Runaan. Callum, Stella, and Sneezles chose to help Rayla free Runaan before fleeing the Banther Lodge.[58] Ezran intended to capture Callum for high treason, but chose to prioritize his people's safety after listening to Aanya's advice. Aanya gave Team Zym large quantities of Fire Rubies to Team Zym so they could protect Katolis from future threats.[59]
Meanwhile, Callum, Rayla, Runaan, Stella, and Sneezles arrived at the Silvergrove, where they reunited with Ethari and convinced Lyrennus, the Keeper of the Well of the Forgotten, to invoke the "Ritual of the New Moon" to reverse Rayla's banishment.[60] Meanwhile, Terry chooses to leave Claudia behind and warn Ezran and Team Zym about Aaravos's plan to create an Eternal Night by inverting the Moon Nexus to unleash countless restless spirits from the In-Between and using Lux Aurea's corrupted Sun Orb to destroy the Sun. He also introduced them to Aaron and Sam, two Shimmercrow chicks that he started to care for after Aaravos killed their mother. At the same time, the former Celestial Elf Astrid flew to the Silvergrove to warn Callum, Rayla, Stella, and Sneezles about Aaravos's liberation.[61] Soren, Terry, and Aanya head for the Moon Nexus to enlist Allen and Lujanne's help by having Lujanne disguising herself as Lissa, Soren and Claudia's long-lost mother, in an attempt to stop Claudia from fulfilling Aaravos's plan. Claudia saw through the illusion and wounded Lujanne before she and Aaravos successfully inverted the Moon Nexus to unleash hordes of restless spirits. Aanya destroyed Aaravos's mortal vessel, prompting Aaravos to shed his island disguise in the Valley of the Graves. This allowed Ezran, Bait, Zym, and Corvus to lead an ambush on Aaravos using ballista bolts equipped with Fire Rubies and chains.[62]
After Aaravos was captured, Team Zym decided to recruit the remaining Archdragons (Zubeia, Rex Igneous, and Domina Profundis) to help them end the Eternal Night. They also planned to gain help from the Sunfire Elves and Akiyu to destroy the corrupted Sun Orb and create a new magical pearl to imprison Aaravos. However, Aaravos ordered Claudia to kill Akiyu, which forced Callum to try imprison Aaravos in one of Viren's coins. Aaravos divulged to Ezran about the Nova Blade and how it became lost following the death of the Orphan Queen before the restless spirits freed him from his chains.[63] Most of Team Zym along with their allies traveled to Lux Aurea to battle Aaravos, only to find the Startouch Elf having already killed Karim, using the corrupted Sun Orb to create a staff that ushered in an Eternal Night, and summoning Avizandum's restless spirit to kill Rex Igneous. The horrified Zubeia begged Avizandum to remember his true self, only to find the latter continuing to serve as Aaravos's mindless puppet. Team Zym and their allies regrouped to battle the restless spirits so they could clear a path for Callum so he could imprison Aaravos. Callum also told Runaan to kill him so he would not become Aaravos's new vessel. Meanwhile, Ezran, Bait, Zym, and Aanya discovered that the Nova Blade was disguised as part of the Orphan Queen's statue and planned to use it against Aaravos.[64] Ezran and Zym flew to Lux Aurea to join the ensuing battle, not knowing that using the sword would only send Aaravos back to the heavens for seven years and nineteen days and create a massive explosion that will destroy everything around Lux Aurea. Zubeia reminded Avizandum about his love for their son, causing the former Dragon King to break free from Aaravos's control and prevent Callum from casting the dark magic spell. Soren and Corvus pursued Claudia through a portal leading to the Storm Spire, where Claudia chose to spare them before flying away. Avizandum and Zubeia chose to sacrifice themselves by tackling and lifting Aaravos to the sky before destroying the Startouch Elf's staff to end the Eternal Night. Domina Profundis then used her body to shield Team Zym and their allies as Avizandum and Zubeia destroyed Aaravos's physical body. Callum and Ezran reconciled as Team Zym and their allies honored the Archdragons' sacrifice and discovered Zym's new ability to speak. Team Zym and their allies then prepared for Aaravos's eventual return and started to construction of Evrkynd, a city near the border where people of all races could live in harmony. Team Zym also learned from Runaan that King Harrow survived the night of his assassination after Viren used his two-headed Soulfang Serpent to switch the king's soul with that of his pet Xadian Songbird Pip. This prompted Soren, Corvus, Terry, and Pyrrah to embark on a new quest to find King Harrow, while the rest of Team Zym remain in the Banther Lodge.[2]
Trivia
- Team Zym's name was officially used in the Netflix descriptions of the show's episodes and in the show's merchandise. It has not yet been used in the show itself.
- Team Zym is often unofficially referred to as the "Dragang" by fans, using a combination of the words "dragon" and "gang". This name is a nod to the popular "Gaang" fan-nickname describing Team Avatar from "Avatar: The Last Airbender". Although this name is not considered canon or official, Soren jokingly refers to his team as "Dragang" in "The Great Gates" when telling Zubeia how happy he is to be considered part of the good guys.
