Tales of Xadia is a tabletop roleplay game released on March 29, 2022.[1] A newsletter for subscription is available at the official Tales of Xadia website.[2] The game features several canon story lines set between Book Three and Book Four that tie directly into the events of the series. The website offers purchases for a purely digital handbook, or a bundle including both a physical and digital copy of the game.[3]

Information

Tales of Xadia is a tabletop roleplaying game using the award-winning Cortex platform. Players will take on the role of characters they create to bring their own epic quests to life with friends, using character sheets and a dice pool mechanic to enhance their story. The experience consists of the core roleplaying game, a digital companion and toolset, a community content creation and sharing platform, and an organized play program that will give fans the opportunity to participate in a connected, living story with other players around the world that will directly tie in with the action of the show.[3]

Playable Characters

Players may create their own characters or make use of twelve pre-existing Player Character sheets provided by the handbook. Premade Player Character race choices include elves connected to the Primal Sources of magic or members of the Human Kingdoms.[3]

  • Babukar: A Sunfire Elf mage and brother of Bineta, who often joins her on the battlefield. He is not only a skilled mage, but also a master interrogator, and thus serves as a secret weapon behind the scenes.[4]
  • Bineta: A Sunfire Elf knight and sister of Babukar, who has a knack for fighting on any battlefield, even if it results in scars.[5]
  • Diyan: A member of Durenian freefolk who fought alongside Vinaya in Queen Aanya's army. During an era of peace, he hopes to be able to travel to visit Katolis with his friend, like their ancestors.[6]
  • Draylenn: A Moonshadow Elf rune mage and and keeper of Xadian wildlife, who is greatly worried about wordly disturbances affecting her furry friends. To achieve peace for her home, the Hollow Wood, she is willing to seek aid from neighboring Sunfire Elves and even humans.[7]
  • Easgann: A Skywing Elf rogue hoping to make a name for himself by working as a vigilante from the shadows, now considering to abandon his loner lifestyle in order to help others.[8]
  • Eljaal: A Moonshadow Elf assassin who traveled to Del Bar to assassinate a human target, who was unable to fulfill their mission due to an intervention of fate. Knowing their fellow elves may not accept their failure, they are now wandering human lands in hopes to find a new purpose or way to return home.[9]
  • Hestia: An Earthblood Elf rune mage with Vitiligo who makes use of crystals in her magic. She travels with her companion Chlormeleon, Petal.
  • Ponmalar: An Evenerian archer who deserted their nation's military following Queen Fareeda's death. They grew weary on how frequent their former superiors risked the lives of their expatriates and chose to aid those who value life, rather than endure the chaos of conquests.[10]
  • Pyrda: A Skywing Elf rune mage with a passion for experiencing Primal Sources and collecting artifacts, who aspires to become known as a guardian of knowledge. She is a friend of Easgann.[11]
  • Routhna: A Neolandian warrior who likes bragging about her conquests on the battlefield. She is eager to become an ally to friends she can trust beyond her homeland.[12]
  • Tressal: A teenage Neolandian dark mage with a salty and snarky attitude. He starts to question the isolationist beliefs he has been taught as he grows fond of unfamiliar Xadian cultures.[13]
  • Vinaya: A Durenian noble and friend to Diyan and Winda. She specializes in seeing through century-old grudges others may refuse to drop, having her friends encourage her to use her expertise to better the world.[14]
  • Winda: A Del Barian Hinterlander who abandoned her homeland to explore the wilderness following King Florian's death. During her journey, she became friends with Diyan and Vinaya of Duren.[15]

Campaigns

Campaigns, officially referred to as "Tales", are provided stories included within Tales of Xadia that include many different characters, settings, and paths to take. They always include a set of catalysts, as well as side characters that can be included in a story. There are currently three campaigns available, including "Lost Oasis", "The Gloaming Glade", and "The Corrupted Core". A fourth tale named "Sunfire Chronicle" is currently in production.

Fables

Fables are short one-shots told in a single session using the Tales of Xadia handbook. They include characters, locations, and optional scene prompts to guide narrators.[17] There are a total of four fables, including "The Bountiful Bluff", "The Library Heist", and "The Lawless Leviathan", and a fable inspired by Season 4.

Trivia

  • The game's rule system, Cortex, has produced award-winning games in the universes of Marvel, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Supernatural, and more.[18]
  • A continuity error occurred inside the newsletter of the game, in which Draylenn's introduction refers to the Hollow Wood as a city, while her official character sheet describes it to be a village.
  • The game's rules primer was included within 7 nominations for the ENNIE tabletop awards 2021[19], and was a Silver Winner in the "Best Family Game / Product" category.[20]
  • The game's handbook makes the errors of setting the boundaries that only humans from the Human Kingdoms may be dark mages, and that a dark mage cannot be a mage connected to an Arcanum, despite elves being able to cast the dark arts as well.[21]. As elves primarily live in Xadia and are generally able to connect to an Arcanum through practice,[22] these limitations directly contradict existing lore.
