Sun Dragons are one of the six classes of dragons found in Xadia. They possess a connection to the magical energy of the Sun.
Sun Dragons are said to burn hot, and that is literally true, as they can harness the powers of the Sun, allowing them to breathe streams of fire from their mouths or store immense heat in their bodies. They are also known for their symbiotic relationship with Sunbirds.[1]
Their nature is known for being tremendously passionate, and just as the Sun itself can warm and nurture, Sun Dragons are known to be fiercely protective and loyal. But the Sun can wreak terrible destruction, and passion can turn as bitter as ash. A Sun Dragon can be as unsurpassed ally - but one must take great care to avoid making an enemy of them.[2]
Ash Dragons[]
Ash Dragons are mostly bright white and constantly shed their scales rapidly, due to the intense flames always brewing in their bellies. These dead scales will resemble black, white and gray ashes once fallen. They lay their eggs in nests built from the ashes of forest fires and they prefer to hatch their eggs before any other creature returns. They have been blamed for many forest fires, but most elves recognize their place in the natural cycle.[2]
Blueflame Dragons[]
Blueflame Dragons are long-lived, enormous dragons that use all of their lives to cultivate a single ball of flame, hot enough to vaporize anyone and anything. The only part of their body that cannot take their own magical heat is their throats, so using their fire breath is fatal to them. Due to the annihilation they leave in their wake, only one appearance of a Blueflame Dragon is known to have been recorded in detail. The Blueflame Dragon Caeruleam arrived to settle a disturbance by humans and the horrifying fireball she produced laid low the entire valley, leaving nothing but bleached white ash. Years later, not even a single blade of grass grows in the valley, now known as "Caeruleam Canyon".[2]
Coal Dragons[]
|
Coal Dragons are strange, dog-sized dragons covered in hundreds of smoldering nostrils. Ravenous for Sun Magic they dig through fires to devour the delicious coals, like pigs searching for truffles, and absorb Sun Magic from them. They are generally considered to be hideous and are sometimes mistaken for a horrible creature more frightening than a dragon.[2]
Emberdrakes[]
Emberdrakes are rare dragons who prefer to hunt in packs, these quick and lean drakes do not breathe fire, but instead summon it at the base of their paws. This allows them to scavenge more than hunt. However, the sight of a pack of dragons, one who use their paws like a sun mage uses their hands no less, is usually more than enough to send any humans or elves running.[2]
Fire Dragons[]
|
Fire Dragons are common average-sized dragons that are capable of breathing fire from their mouths. Their colorations include red, orange, gray, black, golden, and green. Parts of their bodies, notably their underbellies, are usually colored in a different shade than their main bodies.[3] Their muzzles also sport a pair of long whiskers, much like Crested Shore Drakes.[4] Fire Dragons walk on four legs and carry two large wings on their back, allowing them to take off into the skies.[5] Baby Fire Dragons are relatively vulnerable and resemble Spark Drakes, and the latter are often mistaken for the former.[2]
Lavasnarl Dragons[]
Lavasnarl Dragons are covered in bright red scales. Having smaller wings, they prefer to dash rather than fly, and are known to charge up and down mountains around the Border. Their agility keeps them safe from larger creatures and allows them to nimbly hop away from their own uncontrollable lava drool. It does not hurt their feet, of course. Though, any adventurer who comes across them should watch their step, whether the dragon be hostile or not.[2]
Magma Dragons[]
Magma Dragons are wingless dragons who like to dig, and their large shingle-like scales burn white-hot. An ancient king once tried to train a Magma Dragon to burrow under an enemy fortress. That plan ended in disaster when the dragon followed him home and turned his castle into a giant smoking pit.[2]
Smoke Winged Dragons[]
Smoke Winged Dragons have billows of smoke flowing from their wings and are happiest near a huge fire, where they can blend in with the thick cloud of black smoke. They've also learned shroud themselves in white smoke to blend in with the clouds. If they switch between black and white quickly enough, they can create all the shades of gray in-between.[2]
Smolder Wyrms[]
Smolder Wyrms appear blurry due to the extreme high heat they radiate from their bodies. Smolder Wyrms do not need to breathe fire, because everything that gets into their close vicinity bursts into flames. They have best many proud dragon hunters. Thankfully they move rather slowly and are not hostile if left alone.[2]
Spark Drakes[]
Spark Drakes are small, chubby dragons often mistaken for baby Fire Dragons. They can loudly belch a shower of massive sparks, which is likely to case more collateral fire damage than a relatively vulnerable baby Fire Dragon might cause. Adult Spark Drakes are delighted by the resulting shriek and fleeing of a foolish adventurer.[2]
Unnamed Sun Dragons[]
|
These unnamed Sun Dragons are enormous and powerful dragons that have six horns resembling rays of sunlight. They have magnificent golden scales and red wings. As they grow older, their golden scales dull and become more bronze. They can unleash massive blasts of extremely destructive flames from their mouths, the breaks in the scales on the front of their neck glowing orange as they did so. After using their fire breath, they need a few minutes to recharge before they can use it again, with the cracks in the neck scales lighting up again one at a time from the chest up as the recharge progresses. They also have a perfect sense of smell that could even identify if someone is being honest or deceitful.[6]
