Staffs are powerful magical artifacts of Xadia that allow mages to harness the power of a Primal Source, usually through the use of Primal Stones or magic gems. An exception is the relic staff, an elven-crafted[1] relic with a Quasar Diamond that is used to harness the power of dark magic instead.[2]

Information[]

Staffs are usually wielded by mages and can be used to cast spells of various Primal Sources depending on which type of catalyst they are equipped with. A catalyst can either be a Primal Stone, a magic gem,[3] or a piece of a Primal Source, such as an active flame.[4] They are forged from different materials and vary in shape and size, which are often inspired by the respective Primal Source they draw their power from. Their catalyst is often found mounted into the center of a staff's headpiece, as well as sometimes embedded into other parts of a staff, such as its handle.[3] They are also frequently used by royalty. If affected by dark magic, a staff may be used to cast a corrupted version of the staff's magic instead.[5] Unlike rune mages, anyone who wields a staff appears capable of making use of their primal energy.[6]

Kinds[]

Moon Staffs[]

Moon staffs harness the power of the Moon and can be used to cast Moon magic, including illusion spells. A Moonshadow Elf mage wielded a Moon staff crafted from moonsilver, and its shape represents a jagged crescent moon that holds a small, turquoise Moon Primal Stone in its center.[7] They can also appear as dark purple staffs with a centerpiece formed from three crescent moons.[8]

Sky Staffs[]

Sky staffs harness the power of the Sky and can be used to cast Sky magic, including air, ice, and lightning-based spells. The master mage Ibis carried a dark blue metallic Sky staff embedded with a blue Sky Primal Stone in the center, which was circled by a pair of jagged metal plates resembling the wings of a bird. After his death, this staff was passed down to Callum.[9]

Sun Staffs[]

Sun staffs harness the power of the Sun and can be used to cast Sun magic, including fire-based and light-based spells. Their shapes and materials vary heavily. The Sun staff of a past Sunfire Elf mage of Lux Aurea,[7] as well as the staff of Pharos that was formerly owned by Aditi, appear as crafted from gold and resemble the horns of Sol Regem, similar to the city's overall architecture. Both of these staffs are equipped with yellow Sun Primal Stones in their center, and are decorated with red bands. Alternatively, a Sun staff may be formed from wood and hold an active flame serving as its core.[4]

Earth Staffs[]

Earth staffs harness the power of the Earth and can be used to cast Earth magic, including rock-based and plant-based spells. They can appear as twisted branches that hold a gray Earth Primal Stone in their center.[10]

Ocean Staffs[]

Ocean staffs harness the power of the Ocean and can be used to cast Ocean magic, including water-based and ice-based spells. They can appear as rods resembling corals that hold an Ocean Primal Stone in their center, an orb of water that holds flowing water.[11] Additionally, they can also appear as long staffs decorated with barnacles that lack an Ocean Primal Stone.[12]

Star Staffs[]

The existence and the appearance of Star staffs are currently unknown.
