History[]
Soren was born to Viren and Lissa inside Katolis on January 19th. Two years later, his little sister Claudia was born. Soren was born a sickly boy and his father would spend time with him learning a breathing technique that soothed the pain while his mother stayed by his bedside.[1] At one point during his childhood, Soren was struck with a life-threatening condition that nearly led to his death, but was saved by his father through the use of dark magic.[2] However, this act led to his parents separating when he and Claudia were young, and their parents asked them both to choose who to stay with. Soren chose to stay with Viren, and although Claudia did not want to make such a choice, Lissa told her to be with her brother. While Lissa returned to her own family in Del Bar, Soren and Claudia remained in Katolis and were raised by Viren. Unlike his father and sister, Soren did not take to practicing dark magic, but still entered servitude to the king by becoming a member of the Crownguard.
When Soren was ten years old, he witnessed an eight-year-old Claudia performing her first dark magic spell, using a Shadowlife Candle to temporarily resurrect her favorite stray cat Biscuit. Soren told Claudia to not practice dark magic without their father's supervision, but Claudia scoffed at the idea with the belief that anything is possible with dark magic.[3]

Rise Again[]
A ten-year-old Soren catches Claudia attempting to perform her first dark magic spell in an attic without Viren's supervision. Claudia is successful in performing a resurrection spell that resurrected Barius's deceased pet cat Biscuit and ignores Soren's scolding about going behind their father's back. Soren's words does not provoke Claudia since she believes that he does not understand dark magic and its seemingly limitless possibilities.
Puzzle House[]
Soren is training in the courtyard of Katolis's castle when Claudia persuades him to sneak inside Kpp'Ar's Puzzle House during the night so that they can discover the surprise that he was making for them. Although hesitant at first, Soren decides to join Claudia since Crownguard knights never refuse an adventure.
By nightfall, Soren and Claudia sneak out of the castle and journey to the interior of Kpp'Ar's Puzzle House. Soren becomes exasperated by the Puzzle House's myriad of puzzles, riddles, and traps, though he slowly embraces the thrill and the danger of the adventure, especially after discovering the carousel that Kpp'Ar had built for him and Claudia. When they come across a Stone Giant chained in the basement, the terrified Soren and Claudia decide to flee back to the castle.
Soren continues to train the castle courtyard when Claudia asks him to return to the Puzzle House with her. Soren refuses to go due to the potential danger that the Stone Giant poses and makes Claudia promise to never return to the Puzzle House.
Book One - Moon[]
Echoes of Thunder[]
Soren greets Callum in a courtyard in Katolis, holding a wooden sword. He tells him that today they are going to focus on the art of something. Callum cuts him off, exclaiming "Art!", saying that they are finally going to study something he is good at. Soren narrows his eyes and Callum promises to not interrupt again. Soren continues that the art of defense is critical in sword-fighting. He talks to Callum about parrying, bopping him on the head, and asks him if he is ready. Callum takes the sword and says that he is not. Soren nevertheless begins a mock battle with him. He knocks him to the ground repeatedly, telling him that he is dead. He says that he is terrible. Soren agrees but tells him that he still must practice because it is expected of a prince or a step-prince. Callum asks him what he is on about, but is distracted as his sister Claudia walks by. She sees her walking towards a tree and starts to point out to Soren that she is going to walk directly into it (her head is in a book), but Soren shushes him. He, however, shouts before she can walk into it. Soren tells him that he is no fun. Callum asks if they can try the parrying again, saying that he thinks he can do it now.
Soren pulls out his wooden sword and they have another go. Although he seems to fight a little harder, he pulls a spinning move that results in Soren stepping on his sword. Soren asks him what the move was and he admits he does not know. He says that the was trying to "sweep the leg" and Soren tells him that it is not a thing in sword-fighting. He looks over at Claudia, telling Callum that he sees what is going on. He tells him he will help, suggesting that this time he will come at him. Callum does and he puts on a play-act, saying that he has been stabbed by the stab-prince. He falls down, calling him "Lord Stabbington." Claudia tells Callum that it is nice work, that Soren deserves it. Opeli arrives, telling Callum that King Harrow wants to meet with him. Soren tells Opeli that Callum did not really stab him.
Later, Soren and Claudia meet with their father, Viren. He tells them that they have unwanted visitors from Xadia. Soren asks if they are minstrels. Claudia whispers that they are assassins, and he tells her that he knows, asking if she thinks he is an idiot. Viren tells them that they've set up a secret camp and orders Soren to lead an attack. He wonders how he can do this if the camp is secret and Viren presents him with an Archangel Lunaris, a giant moon moth, which can track the assassins, who are Moon Primal creatures. Soren asks what will happen if he cannot find them and Viren replies that they might be on the brink of changing times. Soren asks if he means that they will kill the king and Viren shushes him, seeing Callum below. He warns Soren to practice discretion, lest he causes a panic.
As Soren takes off on the mission, Callum approaches, telling him that he is coming too. Soren points out that the armor he is wearing is ceremonial - three times as heavy, but only half as strong. Callum tells him that he does not care and he is coming. Soren argues that he is just a kid. Callum tells him that Harrow is his father and their king, so it is his duty to help him. Soren points out that Harrow is, in fact, his stepfather. He tosses an apple at Callum, which bonks against his shield and knocks him down. He tells him that he was supposed to catch it and rides off, leaving Callum dirtied in the mud on the ground.
As his formation enters the forest, Soren holds up the chest with the moon moth and releases it. It flies off quickly and he orders the group after it, deeper into the woods. They try to track the moth but find nothing because the elf leader uses a spell, "Mystica-Arbora", to hide their presence. Soren discovers only the moth and comments that to the surprise of no one, a magic moth is just as worthless as a regular moth. He releases it, saying that they will have to wait for the elves to come to them. He and his forces get back on their horses and ride off.
Moonrise[]
Soren stands outside the throne room for Harrow and presents him with a sword. Harrow sheathes it as his side and walks out with Soren, followed by several guards, into a courtyard. They climb up a tower, into Harrow's chambers.
Later that evening, Viren approaches Soren as he stands outside the doors and Soren asks him what is in the basket he is carrying if it is a bigger moth. Viren replies that it is something that will protect the king when their swords have failed. Soren comments that "they" can hear him, referring to the other guards, and one of the guards tells him that Viren does indeed know. Viren tells him that he is prepared to do anything to protect the king and that he hopes Soren will understand.
Callum approaches, seeking an audience with Harrow. Soren tells him to slow down, again referring to him as the "Step-Prince." He tells him that the king is busy trying to not die. Callum tells him that he is not stopping him and tries to step past him, only for Viren to exit the doors. He listens as Callum chastises Viren for having stolen the egg of the Dragon Prince, but when Viren orders him to grab Callum, he points out that he is the prince. "Do it!" Viren shouts, but while two of the guards step forward to seize Callum, he remains standing in place.
Soren watches as Viren mocks Callum, but when the torches go out, he shouts "They are here!" referring to the elven assassins that have come for King Harrow. He places a hand on Callum's shoulder to stop him from bolting but then takes in his armor the first arrow shot by the assassins. He pulls it out and tosses it aside, then draws out his sword, shouting for everyone to defend the doors. Though several of the guards are quickly overwhelmed, he proves a capable fighter in the fray. Despite this, he is unable to prevent one of the elves from winning free and killing King Harrow. He holds his sword before the elf leader Runaan, who tells him to finish things. He says that it is his pleasure and swings his sword back, but Claudia stops him, saying that they can find more practical uses for the elf. She orders him tied up.
Bloodthirsty[]
Soren yawns as he walks alongside Claudia on the funeral march for King Harrow. Claudia tells him to keep his head and he apologizes, saying that it was a long night. She pours some liquid into a beaker and tells him to drink it, saying that she calls it "hot brown morning potion." He takes it and sniffs, then drinks. He laughs happily, telling her that it is good.
That evening, Soren stands before his father as he prepares for his coronation as king in place of Harrow. He tells him that it is crown time, or "Crown Hour," or "crown o'clock." Unamused, Viren tells him "that will be all" and walks away from him.
An Empty Throne[]
Soren stands alongside Viren when General Amaya departs to return to protect the Breach and hears her message, delivered through Gren, that she expects to be notified when the princes, Callum and Ezran, are found and safe. He bows alongside Viren. As soon as Amaya is away and out of earshot, Soren tells Gren that he has bad news. There's been a change of plans. Gren asks what he is talking about and Viren clarifies that he has decided that Gren is off the rescue mission and that Soren will lead it. Soren nods at this, but Gren complains that Amaya was specific that he was to lead it. Viren suggests that there was a misunderstand and tells Soren to set up a meeting for Commander Gren and him to discuss his concerns, somewhere quiet, around 9:00. He walks off, leaving the two standing together.
Through the Ice[]
Soren meets Viren at the top of a castle tower and tells him that he loves having meetings there, that climbing all of the stairs gives him a nice leg workout. Viren tells him that there are important things to discuss and he should try and focus. He speaks of Soren and Claudia's mission to search for the princes. He tells him that there's nuance to the situation, that he is to return with the terrible news that the princes have perished. He gets up from the stretches he was doing, saying that his head was upside-down and he thinks he got mixed up. He asks Viren to say it again. Viren tells him that he is to return with the news that the princes have died.
Soren asks him to hold up, asking if returning with that news would mean that they've failed. Viren tells him that things have come to a tipping point. He continues that if things go the right way, humans could return to Xadia and take back the magical lands that are rightfully theirs, but a child king will lead them into weak choices. Soren tells Viren that he does not understand what he is supposed to do if they find the princes alive and Viren tells him that he will know the right thing to do. He tells Viren that he does not know if he can do that, and Viren replies that deadly accidents every day. He tells Soren not to tell anyone about this, even Claudia. He walks away and Soren frowns as he tells him that it will be a burden to take the throne, one that will someday belong to him.
Soren sits on a bench outside, eating from two large piles of jelly tarts. Claudia approaches, calling him Sor-bear and asking him what is wrong. When he does not reply, she ruffles his hair. He asks her if their father said anything strange to her. She admits that he did, asking if he had said anything strange to him. He looks shifty, but says that it was just a "standard Dad chat." He asks her what he said to her that was strange, and looking up at a squirrel eating a walnut, she replies that Viren had said that walnuts are his favorite fruit, which is crazy. Soren agrees since they are not even a fruit. He chuckles at her joke about Viren's favorite vegetable being ice cream and she asks if he is ready for their mission. He says that he guesses he is. She tells him she is sure he will not die on the mission, confusing him. He eats another jelly tart.
The Dagger and the Wolf[]
Soren and Claudia thunder up on horses in front of the Banther Lodge, accompanied by a pack of three hounds. Soren whistles for them to come to him, telling Claudia that they are the best tracking hounds in Katolis. With just one sniff, they can follow someone for miles. He snaps his fingers and holds up a dirty shirt, which he describes as "the Step-Prince's training shirt." Claudia points out how dirty it is and Soren chuckles, saying that Callum spends most of his training falling in the mud and describing him as "the misstep-prince." Claudia looks dubious a the joke. He explains it, but she tells him the joke was clear. The hounds sniff at the shirt and take off. Claudia and Soren mount up and race after, but quickly stop at the edge of a stream. Soren frowns as the hounds whimper. Claudia calls it a good try.
As Claudia sits brooding at the edge of a bridge, Soren asks her what they are going to do. She demands that he be quiet, as she is trying to think. He paces, telling her that every moment they sit there, the princes get further away. She tells him that she knows a tracking spell, but needs something from the princes to accomplish it. He shows her the shirt and she tells him that it has to be something more personal. He asks if she means underwear, but she calls this gross. She suggests spit or toenails and he shouts that they do not have time to search the whole lodge for that. She tells him that she does not see him doing anything helpful and he rages that he has to do this or else he does not know what their father will do to him. He says that he is already failing at step one, never mind... and Claudia asks him what he means. She stares at him, but then he sees something fluttering, attached to a tree. He pulls an arrow out of a tree, asking if elf hair will do what she needs. She calls it perfect, that they will find the princes wherever they find the elven assassin.
Soren asks Claudia what they are doing as she searches through some bushes. She tells him that she needs only one more thing for the tracking spell. "Special rocks? Magic twig?" he asks. She finds a crack leading to a cave and tells him to follow. He races up to the crack but then asks if she is kidding. He edges through, complaining about being so muscular. As they crawl through the narrow cave, he gripes that this is why he hates magic. It always involves something creepy. They reach an opening and Claudia extinguishes the light from her hand, apparently to aid in her search. Soren shouts that he cannot see a thing and Claudia shushes him. He asks if it will help her to see better if he is quiet. She tells him to let his eyes adjust. He does so and sees a glowing. They follow the glow and find a magical forest. She asks him if he still thinks magic is creepy and gross. She fills a jar with several glowing wisps and he asks what else they need for the spell. She tells him they are all set, that all they need to do now is climb to the summit of Mount Kalik, the tallest mountain in Katolis. He frowns in irritation.
Wonderstorm[]
Soren and Claudia arrive at the edge of Mount Kalik as Soren quips that she might say it is the "Ka-tallest." She chuckles, telling him that he is a genius. He asks "Really?" and she replies "Why not?" She scoops up some soil and asks what it is. He says that he does not know and asks her what. She replies that it is "the Ka-shortest mountain." She chuckles at her own joke and he grimaces, saying that now he is not sure she even got the original joke. He rides forward, and she catches up. As she does so, he asks if she does have everything that she needs for her spell. She agrees that she does and he tells her that he just does not want to get all the way to the top of the mountain then have her suddenly remember that she needs something else.
As they continue their march, Soren comments that while he knows it is late, something is invigorating about climbing a mountain at midnight. The moonlight, the clouds, and the fresh night air. He breathes it in and starts coughing, then comments about Claudia's horse about having released some gas. Claudia tells him that it was not the horse. He tells her he is both disgusted and impressed.
They reach the summit, Soren bracing himself against the wind and the cold. He asks Claudia if she could have done this someplace warmer. She tells him that she cannot, but if he likes, she can use the rare components to conjure a magical blanket for him instead of using them to locate the princes. She sarcastically comments that he would be insanely comfortable and he agrees that he will suffer. He stands frowning as she casts the spell.
Book Two - Sky[]
A Secret and a Spark[]
Soren covers his ears as Claudia plays her ocarina, which lures the elf Rayla in a sleepy daze. Rayla collapses before them and Claudia tells him to "do it." He draws his sword and raises it to strike.
Half Moon Lies[]
Soren steps forward, but seeing Rayla's sleeping form, he hesitates. Claudia tells him to go on, asking what he is waiting for. He tells her that he has never attacked someone who's sleeping before, that it does not seem sporting. Claudia asks if he wants her to wake the elf and he nods. She asks him just how long she needs to be awake for it to be sporting, perhaps ten or five seconds. He replies one and she agrees that she will do it on three. She gets to count two before Rayla springs up and kicks him. Claudia asks how she resisted the sleep spell and she shows that she was poking her finger with a rose, keeping her awake. She draws her knives and Soren flails his sword in response. She asks him if they are going to fight, or if it is a talent show. He stops twirling and she comes at him. He scoffs and presses an attack of his own. His sword gets stuck in a tree and she comes at him fast, but he kicks her away. He leaps, but she rolls aside.
The battle continues until Soren and Claudia force her into a mud puddle. Claudia then uses dark magic to burn her blades and Soren points his sword at her, asking if she has any last words. She asks him if "hot mud" counts as a word. He asks what she means and she kicks the steaming mud into his face. He raises his sword, but just then, Callum approaches, telling him to stop. He stands between Rayla and Soren, telling them they are not enemies. They shout in complaint. He starts to introduce Rayla and Soren complains that she is an elf. Callum describes her as a good elf, saying that he and Ezran went with her by choice. He suggests they let it rest until morning and Soren agrees "Whatever." He groans in unison with Rayla as Claudia flirts with Callum.
That morning, Soren tells Claudia that he has figured out what is going on, why the princes have gotten chummy with the elf. She pours some brown liquid, telling him not to talk to her until she has had her hot brown morning potion. She drinks and sighs then tell him to go on. He replies that she must have bitten the and now they have Moonshadow Madness. Claudia is dubious, but he insists that it is a thing. She asks where he heard about it and replies "Camp." She cracks up giggling. He says that they need to do something, that their father gave them a mission. She agrees that it was to bring the princes home. "Right," he says, "unless a terrible accident occurs, accidentally." He then glosses over it, saying that his point is that they should stuff them in sacks. Claudia points out that they are friends and they should at least try persuasion first, use their words and not their muscles. Soren agrees that they should butter them up.
They have a meal outside, Claudia serving pancakes. Soren eats from his pancake, while Claudia works on buttering up the group. She says that they should come back home with the egg and Soren comments that eggs would go great with the pancakes. He looks slightly stunned when Ezran presents the Dragon Prince Azymondias but quickly goes back to eating his pancake. He considers his knife, which has butter on it and reflects on his suggestion of buttering up the princes. He tells them that they really do need to come home because the king really misses them. He eats the butter off the knife.
He heads inside a structure with Claudia, asking if she caught the intense look he got from the elf. He says that he thinks she is into him. Claudia tells him that Rayla is not into him, but rather onto him. She knows that their dad is dead and that he lied about it. She says that they are friends and it is wrong. He points out that she squashes innocent creatures to make magic pancakes. He continues that she tried it her way by using words and that it is perhaps time for his way, which is "punching and stuff." She asks for one more day to convince Callum to leave with them. She says she is going to rely on something stronger than muscles and he asks if she means some kind of magic muscles. "Trust," she replies.
While Claudia works on Callum, he stands watching Ezran, Bait, and Zym playing with their new friends Ellis and Ava. He talks to himself, saying that there's no way he can hurt a kid. He turns to walk away, then puts his hand to his chin, suggesting to himself that perhaps if there's an accident because he is doing something dangerous and stupid, then that is on him. He walks back and greets the group, saying that he has an idea for something super-fun, but which could be dangerous. They ask what it is.
Soren nails a peg to a tree, attached to a zip line, on which Callum and Zym are mounted. He tells Ezran that he calls it the "Slidey-Sling Go-Fast Rope." Ezran agrees that it is a good name. He looks at the peg, asking Soren if he is sure it is going to hold, saying that Zym is nervous. He tells him that he will show him it is fine and uses his sheathed sword to glide down the line. He laughs excitedly, reaching Ellis, Ava, and Bait at the end. He shouts that it was the best. Ezran and Zym ride the line and when Ezran complains that Zym never opened his wings, Soren suggests that he go again and this time, go first.
Soren sets Ezran up for another run, watching the peg, which seems a little loose. He sends Ezran on his way and Rayla leaps in front of him, asking what he is thinking about. He replies that he is not thinking about anything and asks what she is thinking about. She replies that she is thinking he should go next. She tells him to go ahead unless for some reason he thinks it is not safe. He crosses his arm, saying that it is perfectly safe, but he is going to double-check the peg. He uses his sword to hammer the peg in much tighter and tells her that it is safe. He again uses his sword to ride the line and Rayla gives it a poke with her sword for good measure, jolting him.
He paces in a room with Claudia, asking her if she is doing something different with her hair. He tells her that they need to stay focused on getting the princes to leave with them. He wants to make sure that she is still on the mission. She points out that he built a zip line and he replies that he took no joy in it.
Smoke and Mirrors[]
Claudia enters the room where she and Soren are staying and Soren asks if she had fun on her little date. She sobs and he asks what Callum did to her. She replies that Callum would never hurt her and he sheathes his sword. He asks why she is all "weep-ridden," reaching for her. She slaps her hand away, telling him that it is not an emotion. He asks if she is okay and she tells him that she will be fine. He tells her that he is always there for her, to punch someone or whatever else she needs. She tells him she knows and he reminds her that they still need to bring the princes back with them. He asks her to tell him that her relationship will not get in the way of what they came to do. She assures him that it will not.
Callum tells Soren and Claudia that he and the others are leaving, that taking the Dragon Prince back to Xadia is the most important thing they will ever do. Soren asks him if he is sure, saying that his dad will be really disappointed. Callum is unimpressed, having learned earlier that King Harrow, is in fact, dead. Claudia slaps Soren, asking him what is wrong with him. He tells her to do what she wants and stalks off. He runs into a flock of moths and shouts at them, slashing with his sword.
Soren and Claudia stand out in a field with Ellis and Ava, Soren doing some stretches. Rayla and Lujanne, the guardian of the Moon Nexus, approach. Lujanne tells them that it will be lonely without them. Callum and Ezran arrive and Rayla says it is time to hit the road. Soren agrees "Time to go to the magical land and do whatever." They set off, Claudia and Soren following at a bit of a distance. Soren asks Claudia is ready to do this "the Soren way." She agrees that there's no other way. He tells her that he will give the signal when it is time to strike. She asks what that is and he tells her that it is him attacking the elf. He throws shadow-punches and she groans. Rayla turns, saying that she is going to get some berries, and Soren comes up behind as she is picking some.
She is fully aware of him and rolls away as he slashes with his sword. She pulls out her knives, stating mockingly "Oh no, it is a trap." Soren agrees that it is. She says she thought that they were friends, and he tells her "Sorry, but no." He says that he is just a nice guy and sometimes people get the wrong idea. She replies that he does not speak sarcasm very well. He agrees that he does not and rushes her.
Claudia does her bit, but when neither Callum nor Ezran shows any response after she captures them, she shouts to Soren that something is wrong, that it is all a trick. Rayla, crouching up a tree, tells him mockingly that it is not. He considers and then realizes, pointing... "Sarcasm!" She agrees that he is right and he points his sword, asking what she did. She replies that she cannot wait for the look on his big, stupid face when he sees. She calls for Ellis to show them and Ellis arrives with Ava and uses Ava's moonstone collar to reveal that the captured Callum and Ezran are nothing more than illusions. Claudia shouts to Soren about the illusions before she tells him what "illusions" means. He charges at Ellis and Ava, but they race away. He demands to know where the real princes are and Callum and Ezran appear in a flash, riding on Phoe-Phoe the Moon Phoenix. They pick up Rayla from the tree and Soren shouts that they are getting away. Claudia uses dark magic to try to bring them to the ground but is stopped by the arrival of a Katolian soldier, Corvus, attacking her with a chain. She asks what he is doing and he shouts that he is protecting them from her. Soren gives him a blow to the back of the head, knocking him down. He tells him he has made a big mistake, but the group still manages to escape.
Soren calls Corvus a traitor, telling him he knows he is going to pay for this. He tells Soren that General Amaya sent him to protect the princes of Katolis, which Soren just tried to kidnap. Soren asks for everyone who votes that Corvus is a traitor to raise their hand. He raises his own and Claudia, unamused, raises hers also. Soren tells Corvus that it is two against one and gags him with a piece of rope. Claudia asks Soren what they are going to do - that they betrayed their friends and it was all for nothing. He tells that it was not all for nothing, pointing to a bag in which something is squirming inside. "The dragon!" exclaims Claudia, saying that they still have the dragon. Soren opens the bag, only to find more moths. He shouts that he hates the moon.
Fire and Fury[]
Soren and Claudia pull up on horseback outside a town. Soren comments that once they are in town, they can ditch Corvus in jail and be done with him. He turns back to look at Corvus, who is tied up behind his horse. Claudia notes that they are far off Callum and Ezran's trail, asking if he thinks they can catch up with them. Soren says that they of course can. Corvus suggests that he could help them with the tracking if they untied him. Soren turns and tells him "no", drawing him close and saying that if he untied him, he'd just try to escape, again. Corvus protests that he will not this time. He promises that it will be different. He holds out his hands. Soren seems to consider it, but Claudia insists no. Soren tells him "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me." He tries to continue it by saying that if he fools him three times, the shame comes back to him. Corvus tells him that it is not how it goes. "Shame on you," replies Soren and pulls him forward. He and Claudia march into the town.
They enter and Soren addresses a crowd, saying that they are looking for a town jail. He says that they have a horrible traitor to lockup for standard traitor stuff. The crowd mutters, seemingly ignoring him and he demands their attention as a member of the Crownguard. Claudia tells him that something is weird and he agrees that nobody is listening to him. She asks him what he is talking about and one of the villagers points at a dragon circling in the sky above. The dragon swoops down low and one of the villagers tells Soren that it is the third night in a row it is flown over them. Soren asks why they have not shot it down yet, indicating some ballistae and asking what they are for. Another of the villagers points out that it has not attacked them. Soren replies that it is the enemy and he is taking command as a member of the Crownguard. He ascends to the ballista. Corvus tells him to hold on, that the dragon is not attacking, only trying to intimidate them. Soren replies that he will show it that humans will not be intimidated. He rushes to fire and Corvus begs him to not start a fight he cannot finish. Soren ignores him and lets loose an arrow. The dragon evades it and it strikes a tower instead, destroying it. The dragon ascends into a cloud and Soren turns and laughs, saying that he scared it off and their dragon problem is solved. The dragon roars terribly and descends from the cloud.
Soren cowers, then orders everyone to get down as the dragon blasts the ballista tower and then sweeps fire throughout the town. He orders the soldiers that have joined him to not just stand around and instead get to the ballistae. He orders everyone to fair as the dragon circles back again. The dragon evades all the shots and envelops the tower with fire. Soren barely manages to escape. Then, he draws his sword and aims it at Corvus. Corvus and Claudia, shocked, ask what he is doing, but to their surprise, he slashes the sword to cut not Corvus, but the ropes binding his arms. Corvus tells him he does not understand. Soren tells him that the people of the village need help and to get as many of them as possible to safety. Corvus gets up and nods, telling Soren not to get himself killed. He descends the tower as the dragon goes on another attack. Soren tells Claudia that he thinks he messed up and he does not know how to stop it. Claudia tells him that she has an idea. She can use the eye of a griffin to cast a spell that will enchant a ballista bolt to never miss its target. He asks who carries a griffin eyeball around with them. She suggests that he thank her for being prepared. He grudgingly thanks her. She casts her spell of dark magic and Soren exclaims when her bolt seems to miss. The bolt, however, comes back around and downs the dragon.
That morning, Soren leads a group to the downed dragon. Claudia tells Soren that she always thought it would be him that took down a dragon and not her. She comments that it was one of his life's goals to slay a dragon. She says that it is funny because she does not really care about it and yet she did. Soren dismounts from his horse, saying that he thinks it is dead, but they cannot be too sure. He orders the soldiers to secure the dragon and one of them steps forward with a chain. The dragon is thoroughly chained up and Claudia comments that there are so many things they could do with it. She asks Soren what their father might think if they brought this dragon home instead of the Dragon Prince. He says that it is something, but it weighs about a million tons. He asks how they will move it and she suggests "in pieces."
Rayla comes to try to rescue the dragon, cutting away the ropes binding it when Soren notices her presence. She groans about having to face him again. He comments "A dead dragon and a dead elf all in one day." He says that everything is coming up to him and attacks. He and his forces surround her. She manages to win free and tries to sever the dragon's chains, but to no effect. Soren tells her that the thing about chains is that they are made of metal, which is hard to cut. She tells him she is not backing down and Claudia tells Soren to try not to kill her because she can lead them to Ezran and Callum. Callum then enters the scene, saying that she does not have to. He uses a dark magic spell to turn the dragon's chains into serpents. Rayla nudges the dragon, telling it to get up, but Soren points his sword at her. He tells her that she did everything she could to save a monster that torched a town of innocent people. It did not matter, because she freed a dead dragon. Just then, the dragon opens its eyes, very much alive. It rears up and Soren winces. He then stands before it and points his sword. It roars at him ferociously and he charges forward. He breaks off one its spikes and it roars in a rage, then bats him with its tail, sending him flying away. He falls, unmoving, against a rock. The dragon moves in, but hearing Zym whimpering, turns away. It then flies away. Claudia approaches Zym and Ezran, telling them that the little dragon is coming with her, but Soren shouts for her. He begs her to help him. She rushes to him, telling him that she is there. She begs him to get up, but she tells her that he cannot move.
The Book of Destiny[]
On the rainy battlefield, Claudia crouches over Soren, who tells her that he does not feel anything. She asks if he can feel it when she does "this," pinching him, and he calls it rude. She tells him she will have him back on his feet in time and places the petals from two purple flowers over his eyes, followed by grasshopper goop. He grumbles at this, but she casts a dark magic spell. The spell does not seem to have any effect. She is shocked at this and rummages through her supplies, but find nothing else that could heal him. She orders the soldiers to help him get back to town so they can find a doctor.
Soren is placed in a hospital room, heavily bandaged. The doctor does not tell him the truth, that he will likely never walk again. Claudia comes to visit him, telling him that all the people in town are talking about him, about how he faced the dragon and saved the town. Soren replies that he saved them from a problem he caused, asking if that is what heroes do. She starts talking with him about her conversation with his doctor, but he cuts her off, saying that he already knows. He cannot move, he cannot walk, and it is not going to get better. He tells her that it is for the best and he is glad of it. She asks why he would say that and he tells her that Viren gave him a secret mission. He tells her that he was confused and did not want to do it, but he did want their father to love him and be proud of him. He sobs and Claudia tells him that Viren is proud of him, no matter what. Soren continues that he figured there must be a good reason for the mission. Claudia asks him to explain what Viren told him to do and he tells her that it was to kill the princes. She tells him he must have misunderstood. He tells her that he cannot do anything terrible now because he cannot do anything.
Soren tells Claudia that he is relieved, that he is now free to do what he wants. He says he is going to reinvent himself as a poet. She laughs raucously at this, then realizes that he is not joking. He continues that he will be a poet and people will come to hear his poems. They will visit and drink soothing tea. She asks if he is sure and he tells her that he already has his first poem: a haiku. He recites it: "Dragon smash boy. Say the good words now. They light the hearts of other people." She calls it a terrible poem, and not even a haiku. She rushes to check the cabinets, saying that there must be something she can do for him. He watches as she flies into a rage, smashing medical supplies, and is tossed out of the hospital.
Breathe[]
Soren sneezes when an insect lands on his nose, disturbing one of the hospital workers and a bluebird that has flown into his room.
Claudia enters Soren's room with a wild arm and purple eyes, her arms outstretched and crackling with dark magic. He asks what she is doing and she casts a spell which arcs lightning through his body. He screams in pain as he is raised into the air. Claudia gives out and collapses, sending them both falling. Soren quickly realizes that he can move his toes. He says that he forgot how much he loved wiggling them. The doctors rush out as he continues that he can feel everything. He can even feel the pain of his broken ribs. He stares at Claudia, asking if she is okay. She tells him that all that matters is that he is going to be better.
They leave the hospital, Soren walking with a clutch and helping Claudia to walk. He tells her that they both failed in their secret missions. He wonders what Viren will say. She tells him that they are both alive and that is the important thing. She tells him that they are not coming back empty-handed, showing him the horn that he cut off the dragon. He agrees that maybe Viren will not be mad with the magic he can get from the horn. "Failed missions, mad Dad. But dragon horn means magic. Maybe Dad not mad!" Claudia knocks him down, saying it was amazing, realizing that he just came up with a haiku.
Book Three - Sun[]
The Crown[]
In the throne room of Katolis Castle, Soren and Claudia are brought before Ezran, who has taken his place as king. They are both chained up, as Viren has been imprisoned for treason. Opeli says that she thinks they were involved in the conspiracy. While Claudia tries to argue for their cause, he sits, head lowered and eyes closed. She begs him to help and tell them that they did not do anything wrong. He lifts his head but then lowers it again. Opeli tells Ezran to lock them away, but Ezran asks to let them rest while he decides. The two are then led away from the throne room.
Claudia and Soren sit in a room, having been given bread, while Claudia rants, asking how long they are going to be kept like this. Soren replies that they at least have bread. He asks if they will still give them bread in the dungeon and Claudia tells him that they will not go in the dungeon, that they did not do anything wrong. Soren tells her that Viren wanted him to kill the princes and that means they are guilty. Or, at least, he is. Claudia tells him that he is not. She feels there's no way that Viren would have told him to do that. He lowers his head, saying that it does not matter. Their father is in prison and everyone is telling Ezran that they are guilty. Claudia replies that Ezran thinks for himself and will do the right thing. She asks him why he is stacking his bread and he calls it a "bread sandwich." He munches into it happily and she groans.
Soren and Claudia are brought back before Ezran to face his judgment. Ezran states that he does not want to be the kind of king that keeps fighting battles of the past. He orders Soren and Claudia to be set free, saying that they will not pay for their father's mistakes. Soren looks surprised but pleased as he is unchained.
Ghost[]
Soren and Claudia visit Viren in the dungeon. He tells them that he is glad to see them safe. While Claudia talks with Viren, Soren stands to the side of her, frowning. He is shocked when Viren shouts that it does not matter that he could have died, so long as Claudia kept the dragon from falling into Xadia's hands. Seeing his son's reaction, Viren composes himself, saying that he does not mean to be cruel, but they must be ready to sacrifice. He tells them that everything he asks of them is for the future of humanity, and Claudia asks if this is why he told Soren to kill the princes. Soren looks at her, surprised that she seems ready to believe him.
Claudia demands that Viren give her an answer as to why he told Soren to kill the princes. The Aaravos caterpillar that has been whispering into Viren's ear warns him that if he tells the truth, he will lose her and that he will need her soon. Soren stands, waiting for Viren's response and looks sheepish as Viren laughs him, asking if that was really what he thought. He calls Soren easily confused and Soren tells him to wait. He says that he knows he is not the smartest, but he knows what Viren said. Viren asks what he remembers and he says that Viren told him to return with the news that the princes died, that "accidents happen all the time." Viren tells him that he was merely preparing him for the worst, that tragedy might have already befallen Ezran and Callum. Soren turns away, shouting that Viren had said that he'd know to do the right thing. Viren replies that he had said to "do the right thing" and somehow Soren heard "kill the princes." He calls it disappointing, even for Soren. Soren begs Claudia to believe him, but she tells him only that she believes he heard it, but he made a mistake. they are just lucky he messed up the mission he thought he had. He turns and walks away slowly, Claudia following.
Heroes and Masterminds[]
Soren stands in the throne room with Claudia and witnesses as Viren crowns himself King of Katolis. He also witnesses as Corvus and Opeli flee the room, then catches up to them and stands before them, sword drawn, blocking their path. A bit later, he pays a visit to the dungeon cell where Ezran and Bait are locked up in place of Viren. He unlocks the cell and tells Ezran that he is there to help and get Ezran out of there. As they walk out of the dungeon, Ezran asks why he is doing this. Soren explains that Ezran's father was a good king and it was his job as a member of the Crownguard to make sure that nothing happened to him. He did everything he could to protect Harrow when the Moonshadow Elves came, but it was not enough. He does not want to fail Ezran also. Hearing this, Ezran thanks him.
They emerge from a well, and Soren tells Ezran that they are going to watch to walk across the bridge without anyone seeing them. He says he brought a disguise and pulls out a sack from a cart filled with hay. Ezran looks inside and points out that there are no clothes in it. Soren tells him that if he climbs in, he will be disguised as stuff in a sack. Ezran suggests that he just hide in the hay instead and Soren can pull the cart. Soren puts his hands on his hips, seemingly dubious. However, he ends up crossing the bridge, doing some bad acting, shouting that horses need hay and he is bringing it to them. He shouts that "Hungry horses need hay!" and one of the villagers apologizes, begging him to stop yelling at him. He tells the villager he is not mad. He is stopped by a guard, who points out the hay is glowing. Soren asks him what he is getting at, and the other guard with him replies that it is nothing, that it is actually pretty neat. Soren agrees that "hay's the best" and finishes crossing.
The group arrives at the forest at the edge of Katolis. There, Soren sets down the cart and tells "everybody" to come on out. Corvus, Opeli, and the baker Barius emerge from some bushes. Ezran comments that he cannot believe that they all worked together to save him and Corvus credits Soren as the "mastermind." Soren likes the sound of this, calling himself "Sor-ine the Mastermind." He kneels before Ezran, telling him that he has to go, or his father will know that something is up. He tells Ezran that the others will take him to the rendezvous point. Ezran thanks him, calling him the best Crownguard a king could ask for. Bait hops up onto Soren's knee as Ezran hugs him. He scratches Bait is back and Bait turns a pleasant orange color. He leaves with the cart, smiling at Soren. Back at the castle, he sends a letter to Lujanne, which she relates to Corvus as having been sent by the "strapping young idiot" - "Dear Moon Lady..."
Thunderfall[]
Soren, now pretending to be allied with his father, marches at his father's side, Claudia on the other side and a huge mass of troops winding behind them. He draws up alongside his father and sees the caterpillar Aaravos perched on his ear. He moves to swat it, but Viren grabs his hand. He asks if Viren does not want him to smoosh it and Viren tells him not to smoosh it, to think of it as his animal familiar. Soren asks if he is saying that he has adopted a little bug-pal. Viren winces and agrees "Yes, Soren. He is my little bug-pal." Soren frowns and draws back, saying that he is going to ride with Claudia for a while.
Kasef, the prince of Neolandia, draws up beside Soren. Soren introduces himself, saying that he does not think he caught Kasef's name. Kasef gives it and Soren asks if he detects a little accent, saying that Kasef must be from "Noodleoodlia." Kasef groans and pronounces the name of his kingdom exaggeratedly. Soren agrees it is exactly what he said. Kasef stares at him, unamused, and then draws forward, leaving Soren to grin at his back like an idiot. Later, Kasef asks Claudia if her father is talking to himself. Overhearing, Soren pulls up beside Claudia, stating Viren is not talking to himself, but rather to his little bug-pal. Kasef responds with utter confusion.
Hearts of Cinder[]
Soren continues to ride behind Viren as the forces continue their march to Xadia and look troubled as he again sees Viren speaking with his "little bug-pal." He pulls up beside Viren and tells him that he has a question. Now that they are in Xadia, or "New Katolis," he wants to know what the plan is. Viren tells him that he does not need to concern himself with the plan. Soren asks if he has a plan, and Viren replies that his plan will be revealed at the appropriate time. Soren tells him that he is a member of the Crownguard and the leaders should at least know what is going on. Viren looks irritated and shouts that it is enough. He tells him that if he wants to lead, he needs to learn how to follow, and to follow he should start by shutting his mouth. He suggests that Soren looks to Prince Kasef for an example. Viren pulls ahead. Soren looks to Prince Kasef but does not like what he sees. He gripes that Kasef thinks he is so great, with his quietness, rugged battle stance, and horse with kind eyes. Kasef pulls away, leaving Soren to brood.
After an excursion to Lux Aurea, home of the Sunfire Elves, Viren returns with stolen magic that he says will inoculate the forces against the fire of the elves and dragons. He declares that his own beloved son, Soren, will be the first to change. He tells Soren to step forward and extends his hand, but Soren tells him he does not want to do it. Viren demands that he step forward, but he tells him he is afraid. Kasef shouts he is ready, so Soren watches as Kasef is transformed into a monstrous beast with claws and the fire of the Sunfire Elves running through his skin. Shocked, he flees. Claudia chases after him. He tells her that he cannot stay there anymore. He says that she has seen what is going on, what Kasef and their father turned into. She tells Soren that Viren might just be doing what needs to be done. He tells her that she is changing too, but it is not too late. He begs her to come with him. She pleads for him not to do this to her, to not make her choose again. He frowns and says that it is okay. He bids her goodbye. She shouts as he walks away, but he turns and leaves, resolved.
Dragonguard[]
Soren rides at a breakneck pace to the Storm Spire that is the home of the Dragon Queen, Zubeia, nearly falling off from lack of sleep. Upon arrival at the base of the Storm Spire, he dismounts, thanking the horse for getting him so far. He tosses off the horse's bridle, telling him that he is free and suggesting that he start a new life in Xadia. He suggests that the horse might meet a nice unicorn. He slaps the horse on its rump to send it on its way, then flexes and faces the Storm Spire, telling it to prepare to be dominated. He rushes forward, ready to scale the mountain. Not long after, he is grunting and panting. He asks himself what all the workouts were for. He collapses to the ground, muttering that he perhaps should not have done this in armor. Pyrrah, the dragon that the downed in the Katolian village appears before him. He asks if she came to finish him off and the dragon growls with Ezran riding on her back. Soren blinks his eyes, then passes out.
Pyrrah picks Soren up and carries him up to the peak of the Storm Spire. Ezran shouts for Callum and Rayla to come help. They ask what Soren is doing there, but Ezran tells him to stop asking questions and help. Callum realizes what he means and casts "Ventus Spiralis" so that Soren can breathe the mountain's rarified air. Soren comes to, stands up, and asks if this is the afterlife. Callum tells him that it is still just "the life" - he is alive. Rayla asks what he is doing there. He takes some deep breaths, then tells them that they are all doomed.
They gather inside the cave. Soren drinks some hot beverage and then tells them that his father, Lord Viren, is coming. He has rallied the armies of four kingdoms and stolen a horrible power from the Sunfire Elves to transform the armies. Now the soldiers are stronger and angrier, with big claws. He describes it as an army of darkness that is coming to get the Dragon Prince. He slurps his drink noisily and then comments that he did use the word "doomed."
As the group conferences on whether they should fight Viren's forces or flee to protect Zym, Soren asks to speak. Rayla sighs, but nods. He tells them that he has known Viren longer than anyone there because he is his dad. He says that it took him a long time to understand who Viren really is. It was hard to see, also, because he looked up to him. Hearing him talk, one believes that he is a good person and that everything he does it protect his family, his home, or all of humanity. Soren continues that someone who wants you to do horrible things and convinces you that they are good is a villain. His father is a villain who will only get more powerful. They could run for a while and be safe, but he will never give up. Their only chance is to fight him there, all together. Hearing his speech, Rayla comes up to him and says that she was wrong. He is more than just a big, dumb lump. Soren crosses his arms and agrees "maybe a little more." Callum agrees that they all stay and the group, Soren included, heads outside and greets the arrival of General Amaya and the Sunfire Elf queen Janai and readies for the final battle.
The Final Battle[]
Soren interrupts a heartfelt conversation between Callum and Rayla at the peak of the Storm Spire, appearing to tell them that it is time for the battle meeting. As they walk down, Soren tells Callum that he wants to say something to him. He asks if he remembers all of the times that he called him the step-prince or made fun of him or knocked him down. Callum agrees that he does. Soren tells him he is sorry, that it was wrong. He says that he thinks it was because even though the king was his stepdad it was clear how much he loved him, which made him feel jealous and upset. He picked on Callum because he did not know any better... and also because he was smaller and weaker. Callum is not sure what to make of this, replying "Oh, thanks... I guess." Soren adds "And slower... I forgot slower." He asks if they should hug, to seal the apology. He then asks if that is a thing. Callum says that he is not sure if it is really necessary, but Soren rushes him and gives him a big hug. Rayla turns and shakes her head in amusement as Callum struggles under the hug.
As the forces for the battle assemble, Soren stands at the fore of a large group of Sunfire Elves and is joined by General Amaya and Janai. Amaya gives him a comradely bump on his armor and then they both stand in readiness behind Janai as a vanguard of shield-bearers take a position in front of them. The battle begins and when Claudia casts "Noctu Igne", he like everyone else, holds his head against a high-pitched ringing. He looks around at the carnage around him, then as the effects of the spell clear, he holds his sword forward and orders everyone to hold the line and push the opposing forces back. He charges forward and quickly downs one of the opposing soldiers, then fights some others before assisting Amaya, who is briefly injured in the battle. Both soon get on their feet and start fighting again.
The battle comes to a decisive conclusion following the arrival of the forces of Queen Aanya of Duren. Soren stands with Janai and listens as Ezran orders the group to help the wounded and free the dragons that were captured by the enemy forces during the battle. He unchains one of the dragons, saying that it feels a lot better to be on the side that is unchaining things. He smiles as the dragon nuzzles him in response. A bit later, he spots Ezran being threatened by his father Viren. Viren is about to impale Ezran with his staff, when Soren charges in, sword raised, ordering Viren to drop the staff. He tells him that it is over, but Viren just stands there. Soren tells Viren that he is a member of the Crownguard and Ezran is the true king. He will do whatever is necessary to protect Ezran's life because he knows now what the right thing to do is. He points the sword, asking if Viren hears him. Claudia shouts at him to wait. He gasps and Claudia tells him that he is making a mistake, but he stands, resolved. He gives Viren one final order to surrender, but Viren growls and moves to strike. Soren's sword slices through his heart. He gasps and falls to the ground. Claudia sobs, staring at him in shock and asks him angrily how he could do it. Soren drops his sword and falls to the ground, saying he had no choice. Ezran places his hand on Soren's shoulder, asking why Viren would try to hurt him when it was clear he could not win, that the battle was over. Claudia replies that it is not. She says it was just a distraction and Soren stares in shock as Viren's body disappears, revealing nothing but moon moths. He shouts at Claudia, demanding to know where Viren really is. She just smiles. Ezran gets a flash of Rayla fighting Viren and both he and Soren turn to look at the Storm Spire.
Later, once Viren is defeated, Soren arrives behind Ezran in the cave outside the lair of the Dragon Queen, where everyone is gathered. He then takes a position between Opeli and Corvus. He watches in delighted wonder with everyone else as the Dragon Queen Zubeia awakens and reunites with Zym.
Through the Moon[]
Soren accompanies Callum, Rayla, Ezran, and Bait in their journey to revive Phoe-Phoe at the Moon Nexus. They eventually encounter a giant spider and perceives it as one of Lujanne's illusions before realizing that they can touch it. Soren is about to draw his sword when Lujanne and Allen reveal themselves and laugh as they succeeded in pranking Team Zym. He and the rest of Team Zym then politely and anxiously decline Lujanne's offer of having grubs as illusion dinner. Soren sits next to Allen while eating dinner at dusk and joins the rest of Team Zym in performing the rebirth ritual that revives Phoe-Phoe.
The next day, Soren spars with Allen using wooden swords the latter provided when Rayla joins in. Soren manages to win the match by tripping her into a mud puddle. Rayla asks Soren if they can talk alone, and he agrees before they find a secluded spot in the forest to have their conversation. When Rayla asks if he knows what happened to the other Moonshadow Elf assassins the night King Harrow was killed, Soren says that Viren took their bodies after they died. However, Runaan was captured and Soren does not know if he is still alive. Soren then talks about killing Viren during the battle at the Storm Spire before Claudia revealed the illusion. He was relieved that he did not kill his father before starting to believe that things would have been better if he did. Rayla states that Soren is troubled that they never found Viren's body, with Soren replying that his father was always good at fooling people and he probably still is, though the worst thing is not being sure.
Soren then helps Callum, Rayla, and Allen in reconstructing the Moonhenge before collapsing out of exhaustion. Soren and Allen decide to call it a day at the end of the night. However, they soon join the rest of Team Zym in witnessing Callum and Rayla opening the portal between life and death. Soren then helps Callum and Rayla emerging safely from the Moon Nexus's lake, and is relieved that his two friends are safe and sound.
Changing of the Guard[]
Soren has been spending time with Corvus through a series of workouts and chatting about their respective pasts and futures. When Corvus reminisces about the things he missed growing up, Soren starts to list about the good things in the castle before asking him to join the Crownguard. Corvus accepts the position since he gets along well with Ezran and because Soren had not been able to talk about what happened to Viren and Claudia at the Storm Spire.
Strangers[]
During his time of being a prisoner of Viren's group, Soren struggles to escape his bindings while also reflecting on his past. When the cloth gagging his mouth begins to give him difficulties in breathing, Soren starts to remember the time when he was still a sickly boy and simultaneously refuses to believe that his father is still alive. Viren then chooses to release the cloth and gently reminds Soren about the breathing technique that they used to do together to soothe the pain. Soren then accepts the fact that Viren is not dead and decides to reject his father's help as Claudia, Terry, and the Being return with the ingredients they need to perform a dark magic spell that allows them to dig into Umber Tor. Soren is confused when Viren hesitates to perform the digging spell but swiftly thinks that his father has not changed from his old ways before his resurrection and focuses back on breathing through his nose and out through his mouth.
Deep Below[]
Soren accompanies Ezran, Bait, Azymondias, Corvus, and Pyrrah in searching for the Siren Stone inside the Arcus Vault. Soren challenges Corvus in a race to the vault, only for Corvus choosing to save his energy by riding on Pyrrah's back. Corvus chastises Soren for goofing around by wearing an elven helmet before they come across a Shadowhawk. Due to the Shadowhawk's red coloration and the blood ribbon strapped around it, Soren and Corvus deduce that the assassin was successful in killing his target. The group eventually finds the chest that houses the Siren Stone and proceed in carrying it out from the Arcus Vault.
Book Four - Earth[]
Rebirthday[]
Soren and Corvus are heading for the High Council meeting when they are greeted by Callum who has become the new High Mage of Katolis. Soren has nicknamed Callum the "Step-Mage" due to his new position but decides not to do the same for Corvus. Callum decides to catch up with Soren and Corvus after deciding to talk with the Associate Crow Lord about a special delivery from Xadia. After Soren and Corvus reached the High Council meeting, Opeli asks them if Callum is aware of the surprise they are having for him. Callum soon enters the room and Corvus nudges Soren to prevent him from giving away the surprise. Ezran and Bait eventually join in to begin the High Council meeting.
Soren watches and applauds as Barius is made an official member of the High Council and Katolis's Minister of Crusts and Jellies while stuffing several jelly tarts into his mouth. Ezran then prepares to reveal to the High Council that Katolis is about to receive special guests, prompting Soren to mimic a drum rolling sound to build up the anticipation. However, everyone is stunned to learn from Ezran that Katolis's special guests are Zubeia and Azymondias. Ezran is able to defuse the tension with the prospect of Zubeia's compassionate nature being able to change humanity's perspective on dragons. Once the meeting is adjourned, Soren whispered to Corvus about planning Callum's surprise, but when Callum begins to eavesdrop, he is quick in changing the conversation towards the new dance craze that has grown popular among Katolian children. Believing that Callum has bought his story, Soren proudly calls himself a "master bluffer".
Later in the afternoon, Soren is exercising on top of the castle walls when he is caught off-guard by Callum. Callum has grown suspicious of the whispers and secrets that he caught in the High Council meeting and asks Soren to tell him what is truly happening. Soren makes up another lie about all of the discreet discussions being Crownguard business, but this only makes Callum believe that there is a potential coup against Ezran and decides to warn his brother. Soren frantically goes after Callum and calls for Corvus's help upon seeing him. In order to distract Callum from approaching Ezran, Soren and Corvus manage to convince him to discuss the "coup" that the Crownguard is attempting to thwart in his office. By nightfall, Soren examines the Key of Aaravos after Callum starts to explain his desire of deciphering the magic mirror, only for Callum to realize that Soren and Corvus are attempting to stall him from something. When Callum sees the Associate Crow Lord closing the balcony doors of the castle's royal chambers, he believes that Ezran is in danger and flies towards the balcony with Soren and Corvus trying to catch up on foot. However, Callum learns that everyone in the castle has prepared a surprise birthday party for him. Soren bursts through the door to join the surprising, only to witness and becomes disappointed that he already missed the surprising.
Breathtaking[]
Soren is in attendance during the arrival of Zubeia, Pyrrah, and Azymondias at Katolis, with Soren gleefully waving Pyrrah welcome. When Callum is absent despite being slated to perform a magic show to welcome the dragons, Soren is called upon his place. He puts on a comedy act, but at first his puns fail to amuse anyone in the audience, including Zubeia and Zym. Sensing the mood, he excuses himself, saying he does not want his routine to "drag on," this finally eliciting great laughter from Zubeia and the rest of the audience. Soren then witnesses Callum accidentally causing the giant jelly tart that Barius prepared with his fireworks.
By sunset, Soren attends the gift ceremony in the Valley of the Graves where Ezran shall unveil a painting as a gift of hope and friendship. But when the painting is unveiled, everyone is shocked to see that it has been vandalized with Zubeia's face being torn off. Angered, Soren threatens the culprit to reveal themselves and apologize to Zubeia. However, Ezran decides to use the moment to make a speech about peace, violence, loss, and forgiveness to inspire everyone to build a better future. Corvus then takes the opportunity to play a piece of music he has written called "A Song of Love and Loss", which lasts until nightfall. The ceremony is suddenly interrupted by an urgent message from Ibis that alerts everyone about the potential return of Aaravos.
Through the Looking Glass[]
Team Zym decides to return to the Storm Spire to try to uncover the threat of Aaravos. Soren mounts Pyrrah along with Callum. Callum, however, first returns to his study in order to retrieve the magic mirror, as he has discovered it to be connected to the "Fallen Star." Soren recalls Viren's own obsession with the mirror and warns Callum to not let it corrupt him in the same way it did his father. He then picks up the mirror when Callum finds it too heavy. Later, Soren is with the group when they use the mirror to reveal Aaravos in his prison. When Aaravos briefly possesses Callum, he taunts Soren as being "the failed son, whose father wishes he had never been born."
The Great Gates[]
Soren joins the group as they hold a funeral for Ibis. Later, he inadvertently interrupts a weighted conversation between Callum and Rayla to inform them that a meeting is being held. When Zubeia concludes that someone is working to free Aaravos, Soren realizes that it must be his sister Claudia, pointing out the fact also that they found her bracelet on the floor of the cave. Rayla wonders how they can find Claudia when she has been unable to for two years and they realize that Claudia is likely seeking Aaravos's prison. They decide to seek Rex Igneous, the Archdragon of the Earth who holds a clue to the location of the prison.
The group proceeds, minus Zym, whom Zubeia forbids to come. During a break while everyone else is sleeping, Soren expresses to Zubeia his delight at this time being on the side of the good guys. She calls it kind for them to have brought along the court jester and he explains that he is actually the head of the Crownguard, comparing it to the Dragonguard. She replies that Ezran is in good hands if Soren's sword is as sharp as his wit.
The group is forced to seek a secret entrance into Umber Tor, the lair of Rex Igneous, when they find the main entrance blocked. Rayla tries to seek it alone. She asks Callum to accompany her, but Callum volunteers Soren instead, due to the currently troubled nature of his feelings regarding Rayla. As they move along, Soren comments to Rayla on how tense things are between her and Callum. She tells him that she does not to talk about it, but he explains that Callum was deeply hurt by her absence. Before they can continue their discussion further, they hear the screech of an Earth Dragon being tormented by an Earthblood Elf Drakerider named Warlon.
Soren tries to intervene, wanting to help the dragon, but Rayla stops him. He criticizes her for this, asking if she was not a Dragonguard. She tells him that the mission is paramount and that they cannot save everyone. Refusing to accept this, Soren leaps forward and knocks out Warlon using a gourd. He is then captured by the other Drakeriders and thrown into the Pit of Despair. When the others notice his absence, however, Rayla dismisses it as just him wandering around, saying that he will soon be back and reciting an epic poem about his adventures.
The Drakewood[]
In the Pit of Despair, Soren is set upon by a dragon named "Scarmaker" who has been left by the Drakeriders to seal the fate of those they toss in. As it snarls at him, he tries to plead that they could be friends if it got to know him. Meanwhile, Rayla finally realizes that Soren has not returned and is in trouble. She informs the others and is chastised by Callum for her carelessness. When Zym then appears, having decided to come despite Zubeia's admonishment, they decide to use Ezran's connection with him to search for Soren.
The group ends up meeting a friendly Earthblood Elf named N'than, who informs them of Soren having been thrown into the Pit of Despair. While they despair over this, Soren has, unbeknownst to them, escaped, having managed to tame the dragon. He took off his armor because it was scaring the dragon, then took off her chains. Not knowing that she was called "Scarmaker," he named her "Squeaky". Soren recites this story to tell the others when they reunite, only to make an unexpected discovery: his sister Claudia.
Beneath the Surface[]
Soren confronts Claudia, telling her that she needs to stop trying to release a great evil on the world. She tries to escape using dark magic wings and nearly falls to her death after snagging her bag upon a branch. Soren, however, shields her from the fall, then captures her and ties her up. Once she awakes, Soren again tries to press his case, telling Claudia that Aaravos seeks to destroy the world. He tells her that their father is dead and she does not have to follow his path. Claudia, however, feigns ignorance of Aaravos at first, before then saying that Aaravos gifted humans dark magic, something which saved Soren. Soren behinds to wonder why Claudia has not tried to escape. As he is asking her as much, the Being drops down upon him and Terry restraining him with vines, followed by Viren revealing himself to Soren's horror.
Escape from Umber Tor[]
Claudia has used a spell to put Rex Igneous and most of Team Zym to sleep, allowing her group and the captured Soren to safely enter the Archdragon's lair. Claudia stresses the need for quiet in order to find the map that Rex Igneous is supposed to possess. Hearing this, Soren starts shouting to Rex Igneous that it is time for him to wake up so that he can eat the bad humans. For his trouble, Terry extends the vines so that they restrain his mouth as well.
As Claudia's group continues to search for the map, Soren takes advantage of their distractedness by squirming over to try to wake Rayla. After several minutes of this, he finds himself bitten in the foot by Zym. At first he is confused as to why Zym would do this until he realizes that the smell of his feet is waking Rayla. After waking up, she frees him, glad he is still alive. Rayla then stabs Rex Igneous to wake him up. This succeeds, but ignites his rage, forcing everyone to flee while Rayla goes off on her own with Stella to kill the resurrected Viren.
Soren and the rest of Team Zym eventually force the Great Gates to open and successfully escape Umber Tor, only for Rex Igneous to burst through and corners them. Before Rex Igneous can kill Soren and his friends, Zubeia descends from the sky and intimidates the Archdragon of the Earth to retreat back into Umber Tor. Rayla and Stella eventually emerge from the rubble, which allows Soren and the rest of Team Zym to welcome them back with a group hug.
Book Five - Ocean[]
Domina Profundis[]
Soren accompanies Ezran, Zym, Corvus, and Zubeia in their flight to an ancient rune-beacon on the eastern coast of Xadia. Upon arriving, Soren and Corvus carry the ornate chest containing the Siren Stone to the top of the rune-beacon before Ezran uses it to summon Domina Profundis, the Archdragon of the Ocean. Domina helps Soren and the rest of Ezran's group by revealing the true nature of Aaravos's prison.
Old Wounds[]
Soren and Corvus are inside the Storm Spire watching Ezran rehearsing for the big speech he will make when he meets with the dragons of Xadia. When Ezran asks whether he should use "beseech" or "entreat" in his speech, Soren is corrected by Corvus that the word "entreat" does not involve treats. Soren believes that Ezran should not burden himself and he deserves to spend time as a regular child so he will not grow up as a weird person. Regardless, Soren cannot help himself from laughing when Ezran says the word "duty" and when Corvus says the word "deterred".
Nightmares & Revelations[]
Soren and the rest of Ezran's group are happy to learn that all of the dragons Zubeia summoned have agreed to help them in locating Claudia and Viren.
The Great Bookery[]
Soren accompanies Ezran's group in rescuing Callum, Rayla, Bait, Stella, and Amaya from the corrupted Banthers in the Great Bookery of Lux Aurea. Soren is able to catch Bait after Amaya tossed the Glow Toad to him and lets out a smile of relief knowing that she and Corvus managed to shelter themselves inside the book drop.
Archmage Akiyu[]
Soren and Bait are inside the lair of the Storm Spire as they observe Zubeia's festering wound. He then advises Zubeia to stay behind and heal while Team Zym continue on with their quest. Zubeia claims that she had suffered worse and insists that she will be fine after making a quip about Soren being a dragon doctor. Soren is concerned that Zubeia decides to cover her wound when the rest of Team Zym arrive to declare that their next mission is meeting with the Tidebound Elf Archmage Akiyu.
After arriving at the tide pools where Akiyu resides, Soren comes up with the idea of using empty large shells to sneak past the hungry Carrion Gulls before meeting a Tidebound Elf who introduces herself as "Tidebound Tina". Tina agrees to take Team Zym to Akiyu after they revealed their intention of finding Aaravos's prison. When the rest of Team Zym is walking through what is an allegedly dark corridor, Soren notices that the entrance is covered with ooze, which he soon deduces as drool. A horrified Soren realizes that his friends has been tricked into being eaten by a large sea creature. Soren struggles to pry the creature's mouth open with his sword as the rest of Team Zym realize that they are being digested. Soren is relieved that Zym used his powers to make the creature spit his friends out before Tina reveals herself as Akiyu. When Akiyu finds out about Claudia and Viren's plan to release Aaravos, she tells Team Zym that the prison is located in the Sea of the Castout and gives them an enchanted amulet. Soren also accepts the magi-kelp glow-juice shot that Akiyu offers to Ezran before she orders Team Zym to leave. Soren and his friends then wait for Zubeia to return, but becomes concerned when the Dragon Queen is unable to appear on time.
Bait & Switch[]
Upon realizing that Zubeia is unable to rendezvous with Team Zym, Soren and his friends are forced to travel to Scumport to find a ship captain who is willing to help them sail to the Sea of the Castout. Soren comments on the creepiness of the ferryman's whistling and makes a remark that no one in Team Zym is unable to "out-creep" him. When Rayla encourages Team Zym to blend in with the unsavory people of Scumport, Soren decides to pose as a handsome and rich merchant from the west named "Smort Longpocket" and he declines Callum's offer to pose as Smort's bodyguard named "Glint Zaphand". Soren also attempts to buy lavender oil from an Earthblood Elf vendor before Rayla pulls him away.
Soren accompanies Rayla, Zym, and Stella as they try to hire a captain who is willing to sail them to the Sea of the Castout. After numerous rejections, Soren runs into Villads and Berto, two old friends of Team Zym who agree to take them to the Sea of the Castout. However, Ezran refuses to leave Scumport since he plans to steal something that should not be in the possession of Finnegrin, the Tidebound Elf who rules over the island town.
Soren assumes his "Smort Longpocket" persona to persuade Finnegrin into leaving and locking his office alongside Elmer as Ezran hides behind a nearby pile of crates. As they walk through Scumport's marketplace, Callum and Villads create chaos by unleashing a swarm of Smoke Bees from the barrel they are pretending to fight over. The resulting cloud of smoke allows Soren to escape to The Ruthless before the rest of Team Zym join in sailing off to the Sea of the Castout. Soren fawns over the three baby Glow Toads that he and his friends rescued from Finnegrin before he is introduced to Villads's new first mate: the winged Skywing Elf Nyx.
Sea Legs[]
Soren is exercising on the deck of The Ruthless before he says "good morning" to Ezran and the three baby Glow Toads, with one of them growing fond of perching on his head. Soren notes that the green baby Glow Toads tends to sneeze upon seeing sunlight, which inspires Ezran to name him Sneezles.
After Callum cast "Aspiro" and accidentally knocked the blue baby Glow Toad overboard, Soren jumps into water while still wearing his armor. Upon rescuing the blue baby Glow Toad from a hungry leviathan and giving him to Zym, Soren requests his friends to tell Claudia that he said "hi" before Callum, Rayla, and Villads pull him up with a rope. Soren is taunts the leviathan for swimming away instead of eating him before Nyx informs everyone that Finnegrin is following them on Sea Legs. Callum opts to hide The Ruthless in a nearby fog bank with "Ventus Validus" while telling everyone to "hold on to their hats", which inspires Soren to name the blue baby Glow Toad Hat.
Ezran names the orange baby Glow Toad Jellybug when everyone else realizes that Finnegrin is still pursuing them. Soren and all of his friends are eventually taken captive after Finnegrin used Sea Legs to destroy The Ruthless.
Finnegrin's Wake[]
When Finnegrin asks Callum on which of his friends' hands will be cut off for stealing the baby Glow Toads, Soren offers to have one of his hands taken since his are the biggest and strongest in Team Zym. Elmer notes that a hand will take weeks to regrow before Soren corrects him that such ability does not apply to humans and elves.
Soren is able to catch Rayla after Callum rescued her from being fed to a leviathan. Soren then approaches Elmer as the latter is about to follow Finnegrin's order of beating Callum up and tells him that he does not have to do anything the Tidebound Elf after being called worthless and given insulting nicknames. However, Elmer chooses to hit Soren when Finnegrin tells him to. Elmer asks Soren why he keeps on getting up, and Soren says that he knows what Elmer is feeling due to his past experiences with Viren. When Soren tells Elmer that he does not have to be cruel like Finnegrin, Elmer is finally fed up with Tidebound Elf constantly calling him "Deadwood" and tosses him to the leviathan's mouth before freeing Team Zym from their bonds. Soren then boasts Elmer's courage to Nyx after she returned to Sea Legs.
Infantis Sanguine[]
As Team Zym uses a rowboat to enter the Sea of the Castout, Soren is worried that Claudia and Viren managed to beat them in finding Aaravos's prison due to being one step ahead. However, Ezran assures Soren and the rest of Team Zym that they will be the ones to find the prison first thanks to the knowledge Domina Profundis provided regarding its true nature.
Soren remains on the rowboat with Bait, Zym, Sneezles, Hat, and Jellybug while Callum, Rayla, Ezran, and Stella dive into the Sea of the Castout to retrieve Aaravos's prison. He happily reunites with the quartet after they succeeded in their mission.
Book Six - Stars[]
Startouched[]
Soren leads a blindfolded Opeli to a super-secret High Council meeting in a secret location while assuring her that it is Crownguard precaution. He then does the secret knock and presents himself as "Lord Breadsandwich" and Opeli as "Lady Bossyface" before Ezran tells them to enter. Not long after, Soren removes Opeli's blindfold to reveal that they are in the High Mage's office before introducing her to Sneezles, Hat, and Jellybug. When everyone debates on what must be done with Aaravos's prison, Soren suggests in forming a "Fellowship of the Pearl" that will take and throw the prison into the volcano. However, Rayla shoots Soren's idea down since destroying the prison might free Aaravos instead of killing him. Everyone eventually agrees to Ezran's decision to keep the prison hidden and protected in Katolis.
By nightfall, Soren is training in the Katolis castle's courtyard when he notices Zym howling at the moon to express how much he misses his mother Zubeia. The sympathetic Soren relates to Zym since he sometimes wonders where his mother Lissa is too. He then joins Zym in howling at the moon.
The next morning, Soren departs from Katolis with Zym, Pyrrah, and Hat so they can begin their quest of finding Zubeia.
Love, War & Mushrooms[]
Soren, Zym, Pyrrah, and Hat are flying across Xadia as he encourages Hat to relish the bracing winds of adventure and assures Zym that they will find Zubeia after picking Corvus up from the Sunfire Elf camp. Upon arriving at the Sunfire Elf camp, Soren hugs, picks up, and asks Corvus to use his skills in tracking down Zubeia.
As Soren and his group enter the Storm Spire's lair, he reveals to Corvus that the wound the corrupted Banther inflicted on Zubeia festered, and she chose to keep it a secret so Zym is not concerned about her well-being. Soren then notices Zym solemnly curling on Zubeia's spot and decides to use charades to communicate with Corvus so they would not make Zym feel so anxious. Soren states that Corvus is unfamiliar with charades since the latter never attended any of the Crownguard Bonding Barbecue Game Night Extravaganzas. He and the rest of his group soon follow Corvus to the pinnacle, where they spot an unusual stretch of flattened forest a few miles out. Everyone soon realizes that Zubeia must have crashed.
At the crash site, Soren believes that Zubeia must have flew off, but Corvus disagrees due to the lack of claw indentations on the ground and the intact tree tops. Soren soon notices the abundance of mushrooms where Zubeia crashed as it forms a trail leading deeper into the forest. Soren agrees to follow the mushroom trail before Corvus tells him and Hat to spit out the mushrooms they are eating.
When the sun sets in Xadia, Soren sings about "Camp Katolis" before he, Zym, Corvus, and Hat decide to camp under a large tree upon coming across the last mushroom. The next morning, Soren and his group discover mushrooms surrounding them, only to learn that one of the mushrooms is actually a Mushpal. Soren decides to use charades in asking the Mushpal about Zubeia's whereabouts, and the Mushpal leads them further into the forest. Corvus struggles to keep up due to his leg injury, prompting Soren to carry him on his back. They soon come across a large Mushpal named Gus that puts them to sleep with his spores.
Soren and his group eventually wake up on Fungi Lane, where they meet Mukho, the Earthblood Elf who has been caring for Zubeia and encourages them to wear mushroom caps so the Mushpals will see them as friends. Soren, Corvus, and Hat wait outside the tree hollow where Zubeia rests after Zym ate a mush-mallow to reunite with her. Soren confesses to Corvus that he is worried about Zym since Zubeia is the only family he has. Corvus decides to use charades to comfort and tell Soren that Zym has him, who is a good man with a big heart. The delighted Soren hugs Corvus, who reciprocates the gesture.
Before Soren and his group decide to depart from Fungi Lane in the afternoon, he decides to eat a mush-mallow to shrink and become Hat's hat. He then laughs as Zym tickles him with licks.
The Starscraper[]
Soren, Zym, Corvus, Pyrrah, and Hat return to Katolis where they find Ezran, Bait, Opeli, and Barius contemplating silently. Soren gives Barius some mushrooms as souvenirs and is about to explain his group's adventure before asking Ezran if something is wrong. He is then shocked to learn that his father Viren has been imprisoned in the dungeon.
Moonless Night[]
As night falls in Katolis, Soren enters Ezran's chambers to check on the young king. Ezran reveals that while he is excited about the wedding, he is anxious about leaving Katolis since Callum's group has not yet returned from the Star Scraper, Zubeia has not fully recovered from her infection, and Viren is still imprisoned in the dungeon. Soren encourages Ezran to not worry about Viren, have fun at the wedding, and give Amaya a friendly punch in the arm. Ezran promises to give Amaya both a friendly punch in the arm and a hug before embracing Soren. Soren tells Ezran good night before he exits and prepares to confront his father.
Soren silently and solemnly delivers dinner to Viren before asking him if he needs anything else. When Viren tries to confess how much he has changed after everything he experienced, Soren chooses to ignore his father's pleas and leaves.
The next morning, Soren delivers breakfast to Viren and is about to leave when Viren asks him why he kept coming back despite his position as a Crownguard. Soren claims that he simply wants to see Viren suffer, and Viren confesses that he has changed since their bitter reunion in the Drakewood. Soren listens to Viren confessing his flaws and regrets before expressing how proud he is to see his son growing into a strong person who is true to his heart. However, Soren does not believe any of Viren's words and angrily interjects as he yells and rants about not being manipulated again before slamming his fist against the bars. He eventually regains his composure before storming off.
Later on, Soren silently sits next to Viren's cell as the latter wakes up from his sleep. He listens to his father saying that he does not expect forgiveness and knows that he does not deserve any kind of redemption or mercy. Soren feels some burden lifted when Viren assures him that he is not responsible for the pain his father caused. He then leaves and whimpers as Viren tells him that he wants him to have his words in the future when he might need them.
Moment of Truth[]
Soren returns to Viren's cell and asks his father what he wants to give him after the guard informed him of such request. Viren is about to give his letter of confession to Soren, but soon realizes that in doing so, he will be shifting his burden to his son, who will need all his strength. Viren lies about the guard had misheard his words, and Soren leaves with the guards as Viren uses a candle to burn the letter.
We All Fall Down[]
Soren is playing with Hat as Opeli says she is surprised to he attended her talk on advanced fiscal exercises last week and is glad that he found it interesting. Soren then confesses that he did not find it interesting, for he misheard and thought the topic was advanced physical exercises. However, their meeting is interrupted when Sol Regem attacks Katolis. Soren helps some wounded people getting into safety and rushes to the castle walls before a falling brick to his head causes him to black out temporarily. He regains consciousness when Hat wakes him up and commands the soldiers to stand down and focus on evacuating the people since Sol Regem is too powerful and the castle is merely a building. Soren then gives Hat to Opeli so he can retrieve the relic staff and rush to the dungeon.
Upon entering the dungeon, Soren rushes into Viren's cell and frees his father before asking him to use dark magic to perform the "Hearts of Cinder" spell to protect the people from Sol Regem's fire. Viren is reluctant since he gave up dark magic and that the dark magic version of "Hearts of Cinder" requires a human heart. However, Soren convinces his father to cast the spell to prevent more lives from being lost and offers to use his heart for the spell. Viren refuses and decides to carve his own heart to spare his son.
Sol Regem continues his rampage as Soren rushes to help a man who is trapped beneath large debris. Soren then witnesses Viren casting the spell from the royal chambers' balcony as Sol Regem's flames engulf his body. However, the spell works, granting Soren and the people of Katolis temporary immunity to the blaze. Soren leads the people to safety and briefly casts a wistful glance at Viren while the castle crumbles. He then hangs his head and walks away solemnly, knowing that his father had given his life to protect his kingdom.
