Sky Dragons are one of the six classes of dragons found in Xadia. They possess a connection to the magical energy of the Sky.

They make use of various elements of the Sky, including movements of the wind, storms, and clouds. While the Archdragons of this Primal Source are the most powerful of their kind, any Sky Dragon is underestimated at one's own great peril.

They are said to often have an overall free-spirited and playful nature - but do not be fooled. Sky Dragons play a prominent role in Xadian politics and have earned their influence through the all-encompassing power of their Primal Source.[1]

Breezewisp Dragons[]

Breezewisp Dragons are light, wispy, and tiny, with a paper-thin serpent-like body. They are known to ride the breeze, though it is unclear if they let the breeze carry them randomly in whimsical flights or if they create the breeze themselves.[1] Not much else is known about these dragons.

Cloud Wyverns[]

Cloud Wyverns are shimmering, pure white, two-winged dragons with a semi-solid body that resembles clouds. Two long horns grow from their heads, and they carry two membrane wings on their back. Unlike regular wyverns, they appear to have four legs. Not much larger than a regular human or elf, these dragons prefer to stay inside the clouds and only occasionally dart in and out when it rains. Old stories say that when a storm is scentless and the air seems cleaner somehow, it is because there are Cloud Wyverns dancing above.[1]

Dustfury Dragons[]

Dustfury Dragons are four-winged dragons that are highly territorial and enjoy causing chaos. They are most often spotted scavenging failing crop fields for the last of the livestock.[1]

Horizon-Mawed Dragons[]

Horizon-Mawed Dragons are able to adapt the color of their scales to match the sky above them, leaving their true appearance a mystery and making them very difficult to document in any way. However, they are suspected to be large and winged, due to the size of their opened maws and blinking eyes that sometimes become visible.[1]

Hurricane's Eye Dragons[]

Hurricane's Eye Dragons are big and lanky, though elegant. They can be found silently drifting along the upper clouds of tropical storms, using them to hunt the churning seas below. Scholars disagree on whether these dragons find said storms or create the storms themselves.[1]

Lightningspear Dragons[]

Lightningspear Dragons are fast and ruthless dragons who hunt far outside the visual range of most creatures; they silently dive-bomb their unsuspecting prey, stun them with an electrical burst, then snatch them and carry them off before the prey even knows what happened.[1]

Storm Dragons[]

Storm Dragons are rare, enormous, and powerful four-legged dragons that carry two large wings on their backs, while thick manes grow from their heads down to their backs, with an additional tuft sprouting from the end of their tail. Their head is crowned by multiple horns, and their feet are equipped with sharp claws. In some cases, the inner side of their wings are marked by a pattern resembling lightning. Their appearance is meant to evoke clouds against a vast blue sky.[2] Additionally, Storm Dragons are shown to exhibit sexual dimorphism. The females of this subspecies have longer necks and thinner bodies in proportion to the males, while the manes of the males can grow beards.[3]

Storm Dragons can control and harness the powers of storms, allowing them to perform abilities such as channeling lightning through their bodies or firing lightning bolts from their mouths. The casting is often accompanied by a blue glow in their eyes. These abilities are developed as early as their dragonling stage. Their bodies are also resistant to lightning to some extent,[4][5] and they can endure high altitudes without being negatively affected by the thin air.[6] Through the cast of "Vocare Nimbum", they can create storms at their demand.[7] They can also pull natural storms to where they wish for them to go, even all the way to the other side of the continent.[8]

Storm Dragons are said to only lay an egg once every 1000 years.[9] They build their nest out of moss and flowers for their eggs.[2] The incubation time between their eggs varies heavily. In the case of Azymondias, the incubation lasted for several years.[10]

Storm Dragons are omnivorous creatures that can eat other animals[11] and plants.[12]

Storm-Maned Dragons[]

Storm-Maned Dragons are white-maned dragons that summon storms as they fly, attempting to stay hidden in them at all times. Some say every storm has a Storm-Maned Dragon inside it, but Skywing Elves are not so sure. These dragons are known to be one of the most powerful creatures to possess ice magic, when they shake their hides at a great altitude, dangerous mixes of sleet and snow fall from their scales in vast sheets.[1]

Thunder Dragons[]

Thunder Dragons are massive blue brutes. It is said they appear to roar for several seconds before a terrible booming pummels the ground so hard, it shakes out subterranean creatures from their burrows. The deadly nature of this sound-based weapon makes them a haunting adversary, known for causing far greater devastation than their opponents expect.[1]

Tornado Dragons[]

Tornado Dragons are known to often inhabit open plains where other dragons might feel exposed. They summon whirlwinds in an attempt to lift heavy prey up into the sky. Their gray scales are used to camouflage with the debris in the whirlwinds.[1]

Whispering Specter Dragons[]

Whispering Specter Dragons are only seven feet tall at most, appearing as semi-solid, bird-like creatures with four legs and tendrils sprouting from their back. These quiet dragons are sometimes heard before they are seen, due to their wings making the unusual sound of a person whispering gibberish. They can take the form of air for a brief moment allowing them to pass through poorly insulated walls and heavy foliage without a sound. They are possibly the source of many ghost stories throughout Xadia.[1]

Windweaver Dragons[]

Windweaver Dragons have blue feathers, in contrast to most dragons that have scales. When these feathers are shed, they can be collected to make cloaks.[13]

Notable Sky Dragons[]

Trivia[]

  • According to Lujanne, Sky Dragons can only hatch from their eggs in the eye of a storm. It can be a storm that occurs naturally or a storm that is artificially invoked, such as by shattering a Sky Primal Stone to release the storm contained inside it.[14]
  • On a very windy day, Skywing Elves warn their children to be careful because the Sky Dragons are sneezing.[1]
