Shadowhawks are magical artifacts used to send messages of life or death to specific recipients over long distances.
Information[]
Shadowhawks are arrows with a bird-shaped arrowheads that transform into smoky, illuminated hawks upon being sent to their recipient. A recipient may be assigned by speaking their name in Ancient Draconic, such as Queen Zubeia when instructing the hawk to depart with the words "Regina Draconis" ("Dragon Queen").[1] Shadowhawks can carry different meanings, signified by their color. A black arrow is intended to carry a message of death, while a white arrow carries a message of life. In any case, some form of a physical message has to be attached to the arrow to serve its purpose, such as Runaan's blood ribbon,[1] or Ethari's written note.[2] They can be shortened and extended at their centerpiece for easier transport.[1]
A black Shadowhawk is engraved with red runes, that do not change color before turning into a black bird with its beak, head plume, wings, tail, and talons appearing dyed in red.[1][3] A white Shadowhawk is engraved with silver runes instead, which illuminate in a bright blue before it reforms into a white bird with blue features.[2] Upon being struck with a weapon, their hawk forms dissolve into dust and return to their original arrow forms.[4]
Shadowhawks are crafted by Moonshadow Elves, namely Ethari, the Silvergrove's smith.[2]
History[]
A black Shadowhawk was carried by Runaan on his mission to assassinate King Harrow and Prince Ezran together with Rayla and the rest of their comrades. After successfully slaying Harrow, the arrow was equipped with Runaan's assassin's binding and was sent to the Dragon Queen, Zubeia, to inform her that their mission of avenging the death of her mate, King Avizandum, had succeeded.[1] The arrow was then stored inside the Arcus Vault, where it was eventually found and smashed by an angered Ezran.[5]
A few weeks later, a second Shadowhawk, this time carrying a message of life to the Dragon Queen, was later crafted by Ethari and sent to the Storm Spire to inform Zubeia that her son, Prince Azymondias, had not been killed after all.[2] Before this message could reach its intended destination, however, it was intercepted by the Skywing Elf Nyx, who disposed of the message so she could collect a reward for returning the Dragon Prince to his mother.[4]
Two years after the battle at the Storm Spire, Callum sent a Shadowhawk from the Silvergrove to Ezran to reveal his plan of recruiting Zubeia, Rex Igneous, Domina Profundis, Amaya, Janai, and Akiyu for the imminent battle against Aaravos.[6]
Trivia[]
- In their bird forms, Shadowhawks closely resemble Xadian Songbirds such as Pip. Notable exceptions to this resemblance are a longer tail and shorter head plumes that stand upright.[3]
- Runaan's Shadowhawk carried his blood ribbon around its left talon.[3]
