Sea Legs is the forty-third episode of The Dragon Prince. It is the seventh chapter of the fifth book, "Ocean".

The Ruthless sails into dangerous waters, with Finnegrin in hot pursuit. Queen Janai and her guards face a deadly infiltrator seeking the Sun Seed.

Plot[]

The Ruthless resumes its voyage to the Sea of the Castout when Ezran is awakened in his cabin by the three baby Glow Toads he rescued from Finnegrin. Ezran ponders on what names should the baby Glow Toads have before he scolds Bait for being jealous. Soren is exercising on the ship's deck with Stella as Villads expresses his gratitude to have Team Zym on The Ruthless again. Nyx corrects Villads that she is the official "commodore" of The Ruthless since she won the ship fair and square in a game of Danger Dice. Rayla and Callum then reveal that they are traveling to the Sea of the Castout to stop Aaravos from escaping his prison. When Soren greets Ezran and the baby Glow Toads, they decide to name the green individual Sneezles due to the sneeze he makes upon seeing sunlight.

At the outskirts of the Sunfire Elf camp, three guards are having a conversation about breakfast when Kim'dael manages to sneak past them. When the guards discover the Moonshadow Elf's shoeprints, they are alerted to her presence.

When Nyx asks on how a "junior assassin", a "baby mage", and the rest of their "traveling circus" are planning to stop Aaravos, Callum retorts by saying that he is one the few human primal mages in the history of Xadia. Nyx remains unconvinced, which motivates Callum to cast "Aspiro" on the sails. However, the strength of the wind causes The Ruthless to move faster than expected and the blue baby Glow Toad to fall overboard. After Villads steered The Ruthless back, a leviathan catches the baby Glow Toad's scent and begins to create a whirlpool to pull its potential prey under.

Janai is sitting inside the royal tent alone as she waits for Amaya to return from Lux Aurea. Miyana then enters the tent to report that Amaya had not returned and that multiple guards are claiming that a ghost is currently infiltrating the camp. Janai silently realizes that Karim had sent Kim'dael and asks Miyana if she can be trusted. Miyana proclaims that Janai can trust her with anything, which prompts the Sunfire Queen to give the general an important task.

Callum and Nyx are about to rescue the baby Glow Toad when Soren decides to jump in first while still wearing his armor. Zym manages to carry the baby Glow Toad back to The Ruthless as Soren requests his friends to tell Claudia that he said "hi". Fortunately, Callum, Rayla, and Villads are able to pull Soren up with a rope as the leviathan swims away. Nyx then alerts everyone that Finnegrin is following them on Sea Legs and is alarmed that Ezran stole the baby Glow Toads from him since the Tidebound Elf is known for his vengeful personality. Villads informs Team Zym that Finnegrin would flip a coin to determine fates of his captured enemies: If heads, he would drown them in the icy depths. If tails, then they wish it had been heads. Rayla suggests in hiding The Ruthless in a nearby fog bank, but Nyx is against the idea since Sea Legs is the fastest ship in all of Xadia. Callum supports Rayla's idea and casts "Ventus Validus" to swiftly hide The Ruthless in the fog while telling everyone to "hold on to their hats". Inspired by Callum's words, Soren decides to name the blue baby Glow Toad who is holding onto his head Hat.

Kim'dael stealthily sneaks into the location of the Sun Seed before she is surrounded by numerous soldiers. The Bloodmoon Huntress discards her cloak and ingests a drop of blood from her vial to enhance her powers for the ensuing skirmish.

The Ruthless continues to hide in the fog bank as Soren jokes about fog being a "ground cloud" just like how a river is a "fast lake", much to Callum's exasperation. Ezran laughs at Soren's humor and names the orange baby Glow Toad Jellybug after he ate all of the jelly from the packed tarts. Nyx then notifies everyone that despite their best efforts, Sea Legs manages to locate them in the fog bank.

The surviving soldiers bar themselves in while hearing the sound of Kim'dael massacring their remaining comrades. Kim'dael's enhanced powers grant her the ability to teleport to the other side of the door and she extinguishes the lantern on the ceiling before she resumes her slaughter. Kim'dael then drags one Sunfire Elf to the garden of the Sun Seed where she is confronted by Janai.

Callum decides to cast "Lapis Caeli" to absorb and remove the wind from the sails of Sea Legs, which renders him exhausted and unable to perform more magic. However, Finnegrin orders his crew to drop all of the sails and allows Sea Legs to continue the pursuit. Nyx loses all hope since The Ruthless is trapped between Sea Legs and a bunch of jagged rocks called Garlath's Teeth. Villads decides to steer The Ruthless through Garlath's Teeth and Rayla agrees with the suggestion.

Janai and Kim'dael engage in a fierce duel, and the latter is able to use her powers to outmaneuver the Sunfire Queen. It is when Janai enters her heat-being mode that she gains the upper hand. When Janai is about to deliver the killing blow, she is distracted when Sunfire Elf that Kim'dael dragged with her pleads for help. The opening allows Kim'dael to overpower Janai before she learns that the Sun Seed had been replaced by a lantern. Janai warns Kim'dael that she cannot reveal the true location of the Sun Seed if she dies, which prompts the Bloodmoon Huntress to take her as a hostage.

Villads bravely steers The Ruthless through Garlaath's Teeth with Berto as his eyes, and they seemingly escaped Finnegrin after sailing over a shipwreck. Finnegrin uses the situation to reveal Sea Legs as a Giant Hermit Crab that effortlessly towers over everything around it. The sight of Sea Legs crawling towards Team Zym paralyzes Berto with fear, and Villads unintentionally wrecks The Ruthless onto a large rock.

Gren and Kazi are tending to the soldiers who survived Kim'dael's attack before they reunite with Amaya and Corvus who succeeded in surviving the Great Bookery. Kazi helps the limping Corvus stand on his feet before they and Gren inform Amaya that Janai had been abducted. The news almost causes Amaya to collapse with shock.

Finnegrin and his crew capture and bring Team Zym to the deck of Sea Legs as Nyx offers her condolences to Villads about The Ruthless being destroyed. When Finnegrin's coin lands on tails, he orders Elmer and the rest of the crew to bring Callum to his cabin and to imprison the rest of Team Zym in the brig.

Trivia[]

  • The guards' conversation about an egg on a muffin combined with a sausage is the recipe for the Sausage Egg McMuffin from McDonald's.
    • The human guard who suggests the recipe is the same one whom Rayla incapacitated in "What is Done".
  • Kim'dael's massacre greatly resembles the Darth Vader hallway scene from "Rogue One".
