Sarai was the Queen of Katolis, the largest of the five Human Kingdoms, until her death. She was the wife of King Harrow, the older sister of Amaya, the mother of Callum and Ezran, as well as the daughter-in-law of King Atticus. She was killed by Avizandum, the King of the Dragons, during an attempt to rescue Viren.[2]

Appearance[]

Sarai had long brown hair often tied into a bun with bangs on the side. She had brown eyes, a light complexion, and a mole below her left eye.

Sarai generally wore royal robes with red, gold, light gray, and maroon accents. She also wore a coronet of Katolis on her head, which resembles the two uneven towers of the kingdom. In battle, she was dressed in full silver armor and a black cape.

Personality[]

Sarai is described by Amaya as a compassionate and patient person with a sweet tooth and an iron fist.[3] Before her death, Sarai was depicted as a loving wife to Harrow, and a kind and gentle mother to Callum and Ezran. She was also very compassionate towards her younger sister, Amaya. Although she cared deeply for her people as queen, Sarai had a firm moral compass, as she warned Harrow of the immoral practice of dark magic and believed that the lives of magical creatures were just as valuable as the lives of humans. This showed again when her spear was heading for Avizandum's chest during the attack on the dragon, when Sarai's dying breath contained in the weapon cried out "Nooo!", as she did not want her death to be avenged with the Dragon King's, knowing it would bring consequences.[4] Nevertheless, she was incredibly loyal to Harrow and his decisions as king.

The fallen warrior queen of Katolis, Sarai was a deadly force on the battlefield and a compassionate mother to Prince Callum and Ezran. It wasn't easy for her to adjust to royal life at first, but she was determined to become a queen that the citizens of Katolis — and her sons — could be proud of. She now lies immortalized in the Valley of Graves, and the kingdom will forever remember her heroic sacrifice.

—Official Description[5]

Skills and Abilities[]

Combatant[]

Sarai had trained her entire life to become an adept warrior, which was proven when she defeated Harrow during a sparring session.[6] She was also the one that delivered the final blow to the Magma Titan, a remarkable feat that allowed the expedition to harvest the creature's heart according to plan.[2]

Horse Riding[]

Sarai was a skilled horseback rider.[7]

Communication[]

Sarai was able to understand and use sign language to communicate with her deaf sister Amaya, which brought them closer together. She was also not afraid to speak her mind on difficult matters, whilst maintaining an unwavering loyalty to her country and loved ones. They are shown to joke around a lot, as when Amaya signed playful comments about Harrow to her sister.[6]

Craftsmanship[]

Sarai was skilled in making mosaic plates, put together from pottery fragments and sealed together with golden lacquer. She kept three of these crafted plates close to where she slept.[8]

Trivia[]

  • The name "Sarai" stems from Hebrew origin and is the name of Abraham's wife in the Bible. It means "princess".[9]
  • Sarai and her younger sister, Amaya, are of Asian equivalent Katolian heritage.[10]
  • Although Sarai does not appear in flashbacks until the second season, Callum sketches her in "The Dagger and the Wolf" and can be briefly seen on Harrow's picture frame in "Moonrise".
  • According to Opeli, Sarai and Amaya trained Katolis's army to become the best and fiercest military force in the five Human Kingdoms.[11]
  • Sarai liked her children, her husband's corny jokes, sweets, and her little sister Amaya. She disliked anyone eating the last jelly tart, anyone telling her she couldn't do something, and boring dreams.[7]
  • Due to Sarai's frequent jelly tart consumption, her breath smelled like persimmon jelly tarts.[7]
  • Sarai's statue captures the last moment Viren shared with her before the fatal attack of Avizandum, showing her outstretched hand, signaling for him to mount her horse, which would lead him to safety.[2]
  • Despite becoming queen, Sarai was at her most comfortable in her armor.[12]

Her Birthday[]

  • Sarai's birthday was almost more a celebration of sweets than a celebration of her birth, but she wouldn't have it any other way. Every year, when the first snow of the season dusted the rooftops like powdered sugar, the kingdom's ovens would roar to life as the honeyed scent of baked goods drifted out into the streets.
    • For breakfast, pancakes with chocolate chips and stuffed toast with candied berries. For lunch, sweet pastries and fluffy muffins. For dinner, pies with fresh strawberries from Duren's last harvest. And of course, a never-ending supply of Barius's famous jelly tarts to fill the gaps between meals.
    • To this day, Katolis makes an abundance of sweets to honor the late queen. Her family spends some time at her memorial, lighting candles and enjoying a special batch of jelly tarts together. They are always sure to leave at least one (or two, or three) at the base of her statue. Poppy seed with honey — her favorite.[13]
