History[]

Runaan was born inside Xadia on May 17th. He is a seasoned Moonshadow Elf assassin who resides in the Silvergrove. In his youth, he was close friends with Tiadrin and Lain, who helped him court his eventual husband Ethari. By the time the egg of the Dragon Prince was rediscovered, he had twenty years more combat training than Rayla, whom he had taken under his wing and mentored, as well as raising her alongside his husband in place of her parents when they had been chosen to join the Dragonguard. Although Runaan and Rayla initially butt heads about becoming assassins, they managed to find a common ground after working together to drive the Bloodmoon Huntress away.[1] Runaan was successful in training Rayla to master the butterfly blades that Ethari had crafted for her.[2] On one of Ethari's birthdays, Runaan helped Rayla gather several gifts his husband liked, including his favorite flower, the lunabloom.[3] Sometimes, Runaan would tell Rayla stories about fearless sailors battling huge sea monsters.[4] At some point in his life, he managed to tame a Moonstrider as his mount.[1] He also learned about how the magic mirror was created to make sure that Aaravos could not escape his magical prison.[5]

Following the death of the Dragon King Avizandum and the destruction of the Dragon Prince's egg, Runaan, Rayla, and a four other Moonshadow Elf assassins were sent to Katolis by Zubeia, the Dragon Queen, to kill King Harrow and his biological son, Prince Ezran, to seek revenge for their fallen king and prince. Before parting for the mission, Runaan said his loving goodbyes to Ethari and received his metal lotus, which would signal whether his mission had succeeded or failed.[6]

First Saga[]

Runaan entered Katolis alongside Rayla and the other Moonshadow Elf assassins during a stormy night when Marcos, a member of the Crownguard, spotted them and retreated to the castle. In response, Runaan sent Rayla to hunt and kill Marcos to prevent any witnesses. After the sun rose, Rayla arrived at the camp that her fellow assassins set up with her blades bloodied, and Runaan commended her for her success. Runaan led the other assassins in a ritual that would bind them into their oaths of avenging the Dragon King and Prince by taking the lives of King Harrow and Prince Ezran. Not long after, Runaan realized that the humans knew about their presence in Katolis and berated Rayla for lying and dooming their mission.[7] Knowing that Rayla was not ready to become a true assassin, Runaan ordered her to stay in the camp and to leave if he and the other Moonshadow Elves could not make it out alive.[8] As the moon reached its peak, Rayla, Callum, and Ezran confronted Runaan on the castle walls to call of the mission before showing him that the egg of the Dragon Prince was never destroyed. Despite Rayla's pleas for peace, Runaan was still fixated on his mission of killing Harrow to avenge Avizandum's death and was forced to fight Rayla. Runaan then realized that Rayla was merely stalling him and abandoned the fight to find Harrow. After a fierce battle inside the castle, Runaan was able to kill Harrow despite the wounds he sustained. He managed to send a Shadowhawk to Zubeia to prove his success before he was taken captive by Viren, Soren, and Claudia.[9]

Viren kept Runaan imprisoned in one of the dungeon's cells, and allowed Runaan to go hungry due to the elf's refusal to eat anything.[10] With his patience thinning, Viren offered Runaan his freedom in exchange for certain information. Runaan was adamant on choosing to die over accepting bribes and was horrified when Viren revealed his enchanted coins. As Viren decided to ask about the magic mirror, Runaan informed the mage that he succeeded in finding something worse than death before rejecting to elaborate more. Viren decided that Runaan was no longer useful for him and performed a dark magic spell to trap the Moonshadow Elf's soul inside one of his coins.[5]

Second Saga[]

Claudia eventually came into possession of the coins that contained the souls of Runaan, Tiadrin, and Lain. When Rayla held Claudia's Earthblood Elf boyfriend Terry hostage during their escape from Umber Tor, Claudia used Tiadrin, Lain, and Runaan as leverage. Although Rayla refused the exchange, Claudia forced her into letting Terry go by tossing the coins into lava. Rayla's pet Cuddlemonkey Stella was able to retrieve the coins before they were revealed to be illusions, much to Rayla's anguish. However, Terry called Claudia out on her cruelty, which in turn convinced her to reunite Tiadrin, Lain, and Runaan with Rayla.[11]

Rayla continued to keep the coins in her possession[12] before she revealed them to Callum, who immediately agreed to help her in freeing her family.[13]

Rayla brought the coins in her journey to the Star Scraper[14] and the Moon Nexus[15] before journeying to the plane between life and death to save her family. Runaan's restless spirit started to attack Rayla before she calmed him down by reminding him of his true identity, of Ethari, and of her being his daughter. Runaan agreed to return with Rayla, allowing Callum to use one of the Quasar Diamonds to free him from his coin.[16]

Bloodmoon Huntress[]

Runaan, Ethari, and Rayla bid farewell to both Tiadrin and Lain as they depart for the Storm Spire to join the Dragonguard and fulfill their duties. Despite Runaan's attempts to comfort Rayla and explain the situation, the young Moonshadow Elf is still unhappy about her parents leaving her behind. Runaan and Ethari then throw a welcome party at their home to cheer Rayla up and be a family with her. However, Rayla is still upset while claiming that her parents are her only family and chooses to go to her new bedroom instead with Runaan pointing out the location. Despite the unpleasant moment, Runaan assures Ethari that Rayla will adjust to her new home since she has no other choice.

During breakfast the next morning, Runaan is exhausted from last night and chooses to not reveal why he is wearing hand bandages to Rayla before leaving and preparing for his work. Later in the afternoon, Ethari kisses Runaan goodbye and when Rayla asks him about where he is going with his bag of blades, Runaan continues to remain discreet and tells Rayla to not bring any Adoraburr inside the house. By nighttime, Runaan departs from the house again before advising Rayla to not wait up for him. However, Rayla decides to sneak out and follow Runaan from a safe distance through the Moonshadow Forest. Upon reaching a certain area in the forest, Runaan enters his Moonshadow Form and starts training several young Moonshadow Elves on how to master their respective Moonshadow Forms once they understand balance of life and death and become full-fledged assassins. However, Runaan's training is interrupted when Rayla accidentally gives her hiding spot away, with Runaan almost firing his arrow at her. Relieved yet exasperated, Runaan immediately orders Rayla to return home at once.

Back home, Runaan has a meeting with Ethari and Rayla, with Ethari scolding Runaan for almost shooting her. As Ethari begins to explains Rayla about the purpose of assassins, Runaan simply clarifies that he kills his victims instead of judging them. Runaan elaborates to Rayla that assassinating is his duty to protect their people, just like how protecting the egg of the Dragon Prince is the duty of her parents. He says that some must make certain sacrifices so that no one else has to. This statement prompts Rayla argue to Runaan and Ethari that she would never follow her parents' footsteps by abandoning her family. When Runaan speaks to Rayla about being too young to understand such complications, Rayla becomes angered even more and storms off to bed.

While Runaan, Ethari, and Rayla are shopping together in the market during the next day, Ethari has grown fed up by Runaan and Rayla's disagreements. He decides to have prepare for the Harvest Moon at home alone and manages to convince Runaan in taking Rayla to the assassin training with him. Runaan trains his students in perfecting their defensive maneuvers and tells Rayla to stay out from underfoot. Rayla is impressed by how easily Runaan is able to knock his students to the ground. The night after, Runaan is drinking tea on the dining table as Ethari checks on him. As Ethari asks Runaan if something is bothering him, Runaan wonders if things would turn out different if he had not chosen to become an assassin. Ethari assures him that he would still love Runaan no matter what as the couple embrace with Rayla secretly watching them.

On the day of the Harvest Moon, Runaan and Ethari are informed by Rayla that the Bloodmoon Huntress has taken a family of Skywing Elves captive, with the young boy Suroh waiting just outside of the Silvergrove. However, Suroh's encounter with the Bloodmoon Huntress caused him to distrust Moonshadow Elves and is not around when Runaan and Ethari arrive at the location where he is supposed to be at. This prompts Runaan and Ethari to dismiss Rayla's story, which forces Rayla to rescue Suroh's family herself. However, when Rayla's Wingaling goes off during Runaan's training, Runaan and Ethari realize that Rayla was telling the truth and rescue Rayla from drowning in a river. Runaan and Ethari apologize to Rayla for not believing her before and agree to help her in rescuing Suroh's family.

Runaan enters the mausoleum to confront the Bloodmoon Huntress by himself. When the Bloodmoon Huntress offer Runaan to give his blood in exchange for the others to walk free, Runaan refuses and attacks her in his Moonshadow Form while Rayla and Ethari free Suroh and his family. With the help of the illusion that Ethari created, Runaan is able to wound and weaken the Bloodmoon Huntress, forcing her to retreat. Runaan was slightly wounded during the fight, but he assures Ethari that he will be alright before helping Rayla in destroying the enchanted altar of the Bloodmoon Huntress.

Later that evening, Runaan finds Rayla sitting outside of their home, with Rayla understanding what it means to be an assassin and asks Runaan to train her. Runaan agrees to start Rayla's training at dawn as she gives him and Ethari another chance to be her family.

Lunabloom[]

Runaan comforts Rayla who is upset that she is unable to find a lunabloom as a present for Ethari's birthday. Runaan then tells Rayla that there are other things Ethari would love to have as gifts before he takes her to the edge of the Moonshadow Forest. Runaan explains to Rayla that they can collect Sun's Tears that can be used to make a healing salve that Ethari needs to cure injuries. After acquiring several Sun's Tears, Runaan and Rayla collect some sanguicots and a star plum in the forest. Rayla aspires to be as brave as Runaan before he tells her that the easiest people to be brave for are the ones she loved. As the two elves return to the Silvergrove, Rayla and Runaan discover a lunabloom and several other flower buds that are ready to bloom. Runaan reminisces about the night when he and Ethari promised their hearts to each other before he enlightens Rayla that Ethari will love to be surprised with a field of lunablooms for his birthday.

Book One - Moon[]

Echoes of Thunder[]

As Runaan, Rayla, and the other Moonshadow Elf assassins enter Katolis during a stormy night, they notice Marcos spotting them before retreating to the castle. Runaan then sends Rayla to kill Marcos so that their presence will not be exposed. During the next morning, Runaan meditates at the camp as the other assassins pitch their tents. When Rayla returns from her patrol, he sees her her butterfly blades bloodied and commends her, not knowing that the "blood" was actually berry juice and Rayla had not killed anyone, including the Katolian scout who would later alerted their presence to King Harrow and Lord Viren. Afterwards, Runaan carries out a ritual, which binds the assassins and himself by oath with indestructible binding to kill King Harrow and Prince Ezran to avenge the deaths of the Dragon King and his unhatched egg. After the ritual is done, Rayla asks Runaan what they would do if the humans know that they were coming, which Runaan assures her not to worry as they have the element of surprise on their side. As the assassins prepare their weapons, Crownguard knights led by Soren approach their camp. In response, Runaan to crushes the magical pendant in his hand to cast an illusion spell to hide them. After the humans leave, Runaan, now knowing that Rayla lied to him, berates her for not killing the scout and says that her actions killed them all.

What is Done[]

On the day of the mission, Runaan tells Rayla that, despite her talents, she is no longer allowed to participate as both a punishment for her actions and the fact that her hesitation to kill is a liability. Waving off her pleas and the difficulty of having one less assassin on the team, Runaan tells her to wait for them or go back home if they are not back by sunrise.

Moonrise[]

On the castle walls, Rayla looked for Runaan, hoping to convince him to call off the mission as it is revealed that the Dragon Prince's egg was unharmed and was in fact stolen by Viren. He appears, angered at her defying him, finding her story to be impossible and believing her to be foolish for trusting Callum and Ezran. Despite seeing the egg for himself, Runaan states that they are still obligated to kill Harrow and Ezran due to the ritual, and that the humans still need to pay for killing the Dragon King. Rayla, unwilling to let the princes be killed, fights Runaan with the full moon empowering the both of them. He then realizes that Rayla was stalling him and abandons their fight, joining the other assassins in storming the king's tower. There, they were able to kill King Harrow, thus avenging the Dragon King's death. After the assault, Runaan, injured, missing a horn, and the last assassin alive, trudges to the balcony of the tower and shoots a black Shadowhawk arrow with one of his fallen blood ribbons to signal their success to the Dragon Queen. He is then taken prisoner at Claudia's behest.

Viren says to Runaan that he will free him if he gives him information on a magical artifact, to which he is denied. Viren, remembering that Moonshadow Elves do not fear death by philosophy, promises Runaan that he will find something that could give him a fate worse than death. When Viren shows Runaan two enchanted coins, Runaan is shocked and calls the mage a monster. Later on, Viren returns and brings the magic mirror that was stolen from the Storm Spire. The two share a gentle kiss, before Runaan lets his lotus float into the lotus pool.
