History[]
Rex Igneous was born in Xadia at an unknown point several centuries before the birth of Azymondias and became an Archdragon by mastering the arcanum of the Earth over the years. Over centuries, he would bury beneath the mountain of Umber Tor where his lair is located, and emerged once every 100 years,[1] with Terbium and Chert guarding its Great Gates.[2] Rex Igneous became friends with Avizandum and Zubeia, the Archdragons of the Sky, though their friendship soured into rivalry due to disagreements regarding how to treat the war between Xadia and humanity.[3]
Following the mysterious death of the Dragon Queen Luna Tenebris, Rex Igneous joined the fight of the Archdragons eligible to succeed her as the new monarch of Xadia, facing both Domina Profundis and Avizandum in battle. As violence threatened to escalate between the dragons, Rex Igneous and the other Archdragons placed their trust for the decision in Queen Aditi, the leader of the Sunfire Elves who intended to peacefully determine who the next monarch should be. However, Queen Aditi mysteriously vanished before the decision was finalized. Rex Igneous later helped in imprisoning Aaravos after a young human girl revealed his treachery, and had a map as a clue to the location of the Startouch Elf's prison carved into one of his teeth.[4][3][5]
Rex was willing to grant audiences to visitors who ventured into his lair and offered him worthy gifts, but he grew bored of the tradition after centuries of receiving the same types of treasures, weapons, and relics that had little to no use for him, which made him long for something new and surprising.[3]
Second Saga[]
Team Zym visited Rex Igneous in his lair to seek an audience with him to discuss the location of Aaravos's prison. Once he faced them, he was offered multiple artifacts as a sacrifice, though found himself bored by the offer of more weapons and metals in a lair filled with them. After consuming one of Ezran's brown sludge tarts, Rex Igneous agreed to answer Team Zym's questions, though ended up refusing assistance with locating Aaravos's prison due to the risk it posed. After being informed that Zubeia had sent them, he entered a long rant about his former rival Avizandum, mocking him until bitten by Azymondias, then learned that Avizandum had been killed. When speaking his condolences, he finally gave away that he possessed a map, however, was forcefully put to sleep by Claudia using a sleeping after she and her group entered his lair.[3] Upon discovering that the map to Aaravos's prison was carved into one of Rex Igneous's teeth, Terry used his "goofy goo" to copy the map before Rayla used her blade to stab and awaken Rex Igneous. The enraged Rex Igneous started to attack everyone on sight and decided to kill Team Zym after cornering them at the Great Gates, only to retreat after Zubeia threatened to unleash her full power on him.[5]
Rex Igneous remained inside Umber Tor until Ethari used a Moonberry Surprise to persuade him to join the fight against Aaravos.[6] He then burrowed his way to Lux Aurea, where he confronted Aaravos and Claudia until he was forced to battle the resurrected Avizandum. Rex attempted to convince Avizandum to remember who he was, only for Avizandum to kill him shortly after Zubeia arrived at Lux Aurea.[7] After Aaravos was defeated, Team Zym created a monument in the Valley of the Graves to honor Rex Igneous's courage and sacrifice.[8]
All Storms End[]
Rex Igneous appears in Zubeia's nightmare as he taunts her for still grieving Avizandum's death. Rex also tells Zubeia that all storms end and asks her what lies at the heart of a storm before she wakes up.
Book Four - Earth[]
Through the Looking Glass[]
Rex Igneous appears in a flashback told by Zubeia when he fought Avizandum and Domina Profundis to become the new King of the Dragons after Luna Tenebris died without a suitable heir. The fighting between the Archdragons stopped when Queen Aditi of the Sunfire Elves stepped in to guide them towards a righteous path. However, Aditi mysteriously vanished before she could finalize her decision.
Rex Igneous[]
Rayla accidentally awakens Rex Igneous from his slumber shortly after Team Zym entered his lair. The young Earthblood Elf N'than addresses the Archdragon of the Earth with his titles before Team Zym grant their offerings for him: Rayla's twin butterfly blades, Callum's Sky staff, and Ezran's crown. However, Rex Igneous is unsatisfied by these gifts, for he simply calls them "two knives, a stick, and a hat" due to the vast hoards of treasures he has gained over the centuries, and the fact that he has grown bored of tributes and guests. Rex Igneous then decides to chase and kill Team Zym for fun, but Ezran realizes that they need to give Rex something highly meaningful and surprising, so he offers the Archdragon one of Barius's brown sludge tarts. After Rex Igneous consumed the tart, he is astonished by its many qualities and approves it as a worthy gift for a question. When Ezran asks about the location of Aaravos's prison, Rex laughs at the idea of revealing the whereabouts of the most dangerous being in all of Xadia to a group of children since it would risk endangering the entire world. Rex Igneous is about to bid Team Zym farewell when they reveal that they were sent by Zubeia, which make Rex wonder why she would not just call on her beloved and all-powerful mate Avizandum to save Xadia. Rex then goes on about how Avizandum is too busy fighting and destroying human armies at the Border, which provokes the disguised Azymondias into attacking out of anger and exposing his true identity.
Rex Igneous finds it amusing that Avizandum would send his own son to confront him, believing that the King of the Dragons has become a coward. However, his gratification fades into disbelief when Team Zym informs him that Avizandum died. Rex then expresses his grief and condolences to Zym since he was the greatest rival and friend of the dragonling's father. Rex Igneous also tells Team Zym that it was a human who saw through Aaravos's schemes and that she bears a great resemblance to Ezran. Ezran then asks Rex Igneous again about the location of Aaravos's prison, but the Archdragon tells him that he does not know.
Team Zym is confused since Zubeia tells them that Rex Igneous is entrusted with the knowledge of where Aaravos is imprisoned. However, Callum realizes they have been given a riddle and deduces that Rex possesses the map that points out the location of Aaravos's prison. Rex compliments Callum for being very clever, only for Claudia to interrupt the moment of triumph by casting a sleeping spell on everyone except for Zym who manages to hide beneath a pile of coins.
Escape from Umber Tor[]
As Rex Igneous is asleep, Claudia and Terry are able to find the map of Aaravos's prison being carved into one of the Archdragon's teeth. Claudia and Terry's extraction of the map is interrupted when Rayla uses one of her blades to wake Rex Igneous up by stabbing his front left foot. The pain successfully awakens and enrages Rex Igneous, forcing Claudia's group to retreat. However, Rex's anger causes him to see everyone as an enemy and starts to breathe volcanic ash onto Ezran. However, Callum manages to cast "Aspiro" to shield Ezran before Soren comes to the rescue. Rex Igneous proceeds to chase Team Zym out of Umber Tor and corners them at the Great Gates. Just as he is about to kill them, Zubeia flies in and stares Rex down. Rex Igneous lets out a loud roar and summons geysers of lava to intimidate Zubeia, but Zubeia stands her ground and responds with a louder, thunderous roar that is reinforced with a lightning storm. Knowing that he will not stand a chance in a fight with Zubeia, Rex chooses to retreat back into Umber Tor after throwing down the blade that Rayla used to stab and awaken him from his sleep.
Book Five - Ocean[]
Archmage Akiyu[]
Rex Igneous appears in a flashback when Akiyu tells Team Zym about her role in imprisoning Aaravos.
Book Seven - Dark[]
The Titan and the King[]
Rex Igneous is resting inside Umber Tor while Terbium and Chert are removing boulders from the Great Gates. He then peers out the gates and listens to Terbium and Chert attempting to discourage Ethari from seeking audience with him. Rex decides to burst through the gates when Ethari talks about bringing a delicious treat that never left the Silvergrove. The Archdragon remarks how his sweet tooth for pastry, his deepest vulnerability, has spread throughout Xadia. When Rex Igneous asks what Ethari is requesting, the Moonshadow Elf encourages him to try the Moonberry Surprise first.
Dying Light[]
Rex Igneous burrows his way to Lux Aurea before bursting from the Earth to briefly knock Aaravos off his feet. He then charges towards the Startouch Elf, only for Claudia to cast an immobilizing spell that prevents the Archdragon from attacking. As Aaravos prepares to create an Eternal Night, Claudia's hold on Rex gradually weakens, allowing him to swat her away with his tail before lunging at Aaravos. Rex Igneous knocks Aaravos's staff away from his grip and attempts to bite Aaravos. A gathering storm of black lightning distracts Rex long enough to allow Aaravos to break free before revealing that he has a gift for the Archdragon of the Earth: the resurrected Avizandum. Rex Igneous is appalled to see that his former friend and rival had been reduced into Aaravos's puppet. Rex taunts Avizandum for not talking back and spews a cloud of volcanic ash, only for Avizandum to counter it with black lightning. As the two Archdragons trade blows and grapple with each other, Rex Igneous attempts to make Avizandum remember about being the mightiest Archdragons and the King of Xadia. Zubeia then arrives and attempts to stop the fighting, which allows Avizandum to sink his teeth into the distracted Rex. The Archdragon of the Earth roars in pain and bleeds molten lava before his body petrifies and crumbles into ash and dust.References[]
