Rex Igneous was an Archdragon of the Earth who lived deep beneath the mountain of Umber Tor and only emerged aboveground once every 100 years.[4] He was killed by Avizandum after Aaravos resurrected the latter as a restless spirit.[5]
Appearance[]
Rex Igneous was a colossal and muscular Earth Dragon of unknown kind who towered over ordinary dragons and was at least eight times the size of a human. His brown skin was partially covered with dark brown, jagged rock armor around his head and shoulders, his spine, his chest area, as well as his tail. Golden gems shone through this at selective spots, including the tips of his wings and tail, which appeared to glow occasionally. Two sharp, golden-tipped horns pointed forward from the sides of his head, while rock plates decorated his broad and and prominent chin. Two large, wyvern-like wings were located on the backside of his arms with membranes that appeared in a similar color of his general scales, while their joints featured dark brown armor with golden veins stretching across them. He was equipped with yellow-colored sharp claws on his feet and a set of sharp teeth in his jaws, with the map that leads to Aaravos's prison being carved into one of these teeth. His eyes, which were yellow in color and had slim pupils, appeared tiny compared to the rest of his body.[6]
As Rex Igneous was rarely spotted above the ground, the details of his appearance remain widely speculated by those who have not seen him, and he was once before interpreted by Callum as a gray-scaled dragon.[4]
Personality[]
Rex Igneous was an imposing and frightening dragon who was long to hold a grudge. He held a centuries-long enmity towards his former friend and longstanding rival, the late Dragon King, Avizandum. He was a somewhat arrogant and petty individual, which was supported by his mocking of Avizandum. However, he was not without a sense of kindness and respect, having shown deference and respect to the late king to his son Azymondias upon being informed of Avizandum's death.[1]
Rex Igneous was very apathetic and was something of an enigma, which made him next to impossible to negotiate with. This part of Rex's personality stemmed from centuries of repetitively receiving meaningless gifts that had little to no use for him, which made him long for things that could surprise him. This in turn revealed his fondness of extraordinary food that he had never tasted before such as Barius's brown sludge tarts.[4] It was these kinds of surprises that he can experience for himself instead of worthless materialistic "trinkets" that would appease him into hearing whatever his visitors had to say.
However, even though Rex Igneous is obliged to grant audiences to those who bring him exceptional tributes, he would not disclose sensitive information that would endanger the world, as proven when he refused to answer the location of Aaravos's prison due to the Startouch Elf Archmage's tremendous powers and status as the most dangerous being in all of Xadia. It was only after Rex learned about Claudia's intentions that he decided to help Team Zym indirectly.[1]
Rex Igneous was quickly convinced to help fight against Aaravos after Ethari offered him Moonberry Surprise, remarking on his how his sweet tooth was his one weakness.[2] Rex fought Aaravos valiantly until he was forced to battle the resurrected Avizandum. His attempts of convincing Avizandum to remember who he was showed that he still cared for his fallen friend and rival. However, Rex Igneous's pleas fell on deaf ears, which gave Avizandum the opening to kill him.[5]

Earth Primal Connection[]
As an Archdragon of the Earth, Rex Igneous drew power from the Earth and was at his strongest deep underground or in the heart of a forest. He could unleash a massive cloud of volcanic ash with burning lava from his mouth, and the scales on his underside glowed yellow when he performed this ability. His volcanic ash breath attack was strong enough to clash with an undead Avizandum's lightning breath and cancel it out.[5] He could also summon large geysers of lava to erupt from the ground.[6] According to Terbium, Rex's anger could cause the ground to rumble, stones to shatter, and lava to boil.[7] He could also burrow through the earth to travel to certain destinations and could cause tremors and earthquakes in doing so.[5]
Magic Resistance[]
Rex Igneous was capable of breaking free from Claudia's immobilizing spell when he slowly overwhelmed her with his great strength.[5]
Physical Attributes[]
Due to his immense stature, Rex Igneous possessed a tremendous level of strength. He could shake the ground with every step of his feet, send smaller creatures flying with a swat of his head, legs, and tail, as well as ram through the Great Gates of Umber Tor without any difficulties.[6] Despite his immense stature, Rex Igneous seemed to have a low tolerance for pain since he flinched when Zym bit and electrocuted him,[1] as well as when Rayla stabbed him with one of her butterfly blades.[6] He was also capable of battling a titanic Aaravos, knocking him to the ground easily and might have killed him had a resurrected Avizandum not interfered. Rex was additionally able to fight the undead Avizandum to a standstill without tiring, only losing and being killed by his former friend due to Zubeia's arrival briefly distracting him.[5]
Temperature Resistance[]
Rex Igneous was able to submerge himself in a pool of boiling water without being scalded.[1]
Trivia[]
- "Rex Igneous" is derived from the Latin words "Rex" and "Igneus", meaning "Fiery King". Igneous, apart from fiery, can also mean formed or produced by great heat, and with regards to geology, it can refer to a type of rock formed by lava or magma. Granite would be an example of such an igneous rock.
- Rex Igneous was the first canonical dragon whose wings resemble those of a wyvern, as opposed to other major dragons of Xadia, whose wings are located on their backs.
- Rex Igneous first appeared as a vague sketch in Callum's Spellbook, though his final appearance ended up heavily differing from this concept. This makes him the first character to heavily deviate from the first official preview released for any character.
