Myths are stories told throughout Xadia, which relate to one of the six Primal Sources. Each book in the novelization of The Dragon Prince features an intro chapter retelling an in-world myth, which serves the purpose of setting up the book's theme.[1]

Myths[]

Moon[]

Once there was a tribe who worshiped the Great Moon, a beautiful silver disc in the sky, but one day had to discover that it had been stolen. As a result, a war party traveled to the village of a neighboring tribe, whom they mistrusted, where the village's leader corrected the disc to be a silver leaf instead of a silver disc. Neither of the leaders trusted each other and declared war, costing the lives of many people. During a night in which the moon had entirely vanished and left everyone frightened, a child spoke up. It stated that everyone lived under the same moon, and finally the tribes ceased fighting, causing the moon to smile.[2][3]

Sky[]

The curious granddaughter of a famous inventor wished to ascend to the skies on wings made from wax. These wings once before had melted upon flying too close to the sun, resulting in her uncle's inevitable death. Despite the warnings of her family, she sought out the old invention of her grandfather, knowing the wax would not be strong enough to hold onto the feathers attached to them if exposed to the heat of the sun. Warned over and over again, the girl ignored the risk and improved the invention through her own hands. She soon after soared the sky using the makeshift wings, realizing that she could do anything she set her mind to.[4]

Trivia[]

  • The "Sky" chapter of Book Two: Sky (Novel) is inspired by the Greek Mythology legend of Icarus, in which the son of master craftsman Daedalus uses wings constructed from feathers and wax to ascend to the sky. Like in the novel, Icarus meets his death when flying too close to the sun causes the wax in his wings to melt.
