The episode opens with a distant view of Katolis castle during sunset, then shows Harrow picking up his crown and placing it on his head as he readies for battle. Afterward, Harrow marches down a hallway accompanied by four Crownguard soldiers, until they stop in front of Soren waiting at a door. Soren presents Harrow with his sword, which the king glances at for a moment, then puts it away into its sheath. Under the full protection of his Crownguard, Harrow proceeds toward the tower where his chambers are located. There, soldiers equipped with crossbows prepare their defense on the balcony of the chambers while Pip curiously watches them, then flies away. The sun sets while the guards keep their watch. While Harrow practices a few swings with his sword, Pip lands on his shoulder.
Watch your tongue. But, yes, he is hardheaded. Usually about the right things, but about this... [Sighs and places the basket containing the two-headed Soulfang Serpent onto his desk] I don't know. [Places his hands onto the desk and frowns]
[Looks up at the portrait] I was. We posed for this a few days after King Harrow's coronation. He insisted I stand next to him for the painting, because he knew I would stand by him through anything.
So far, yes. [Closes his eyes] I have to stand by him through this, too. [Glances at the hissing snake basket] I need to be the man he once thought I was. [Picks up the basket]
Viren exists the room and Claudia turns her attention back towards the portrait. Seconds later, she notices Harrow's sealed letter rolling up to her feet and examines it throughoutly. Claudia begins to grow suspicious and approaches the painting of the girl holding a sheep where the secret corridor is located. While examining the painting, she notices the jelly handprint Ezran had left behind, puts her finger into it, and gives it a taste.
Claudia grabs the sides of the painting and pulls the hidden passageway open. Due to the corridor being considerably dark, she snaps her fingers a couple of times to cast a cantrip that illuminates her palm. The light flickers a bit but stabilizes after she shakes her arm a few times. Equipped with a light, she proceeds on her way.
[Calmly] Ezran, don't be afraid. Walk towards me, and if she moves even an inch...
Claudia draws the rune for "Fulminis", while Ezran and Callum look at her in fear, and Rayla readies her blades once more. Claudia targets Rayla as lightning sparks from her right hand.
Callum looks at the door, then glances at the Primal Stone, seeing an opportunity while Claudia channels her spell. He tackles her and grabs her arm, interrupting her successfully.
The conjured lightning hits a nearby wall while the Primal Stone tumbles to the ground. Callum pulls Claudia's arm into a chained cuff, locking her in place.
Claudia pulls at her chain a few times, then scans the room for an escape tool. When she spots a Shadowlife Candle within her reach, she hurries over to it and lights it with her fingertips. She then pulls out a container containing the ash of wolves from the shelf below and sprinkles the ashes into the flame, causing the it to turn purple. Holding the candle in front of her, she summons Smoky Seekers while her eyes light up.
Srekees ykoms niaga esir, nellaf fo hsa. (Ash of fallen, rise again smoky seekers.)[Blows on the candle.]
The candles's flame bursts into two Smoky Seekers, black and purple shadow wolves, that sprint down the corridor after their targets while growling and snarling. After the spell is finished, Claudias eye's fade to black and the wolves howl as they close in on Callum. Callum speeds up and catches up with the group.
As the wolves approach, Rayla attempts to slice her opponents, though fails to hit them properly due to their vapor-like bodies shifting in and out. The smoke causes her to cough, allowing for a wolf to re-form and bite her right arm, leaving a sizzling bite mark. Rayla inititates another attack but retreats upon realizing that she remains unable to attack her targets.
I can't stop them. They're just smoke. My swords pass right through.
With the group now cornered, the wolves approach slowly. While Rayla tries to stop them from moving any closer, Callum remembers the Primal Stone in his hand and examines it. The lightning inside the stone crackles and pops, while the seekers continue to growl at them. Callum uses his photogenic memory to recall the rune of "Aspiro" cast by Claudia in the library. A flashback replays her cast.
The wolves dash at the group while Callum glances at the Primal Stone once more. He redraws the rune from memory right as the Smoky Seekers leap toward Rayla.
Callum conjures up a magical vortex that forces the wolves back into the corridor, where the spell fades. After Rayla had shielded herself from the wind with her arm, she turns around and walks back toward the others.
Night has fully arrived at the balcony where the Crownsguard is watching out for the enemy. Viren makes his way up the stairs in the tower to the king's chambers, carrying the serpent basket. The Crownguard stationed at the stairs make way for him to go up where he meets Soren in front of Harrow's chambers, who is holding an apple and dagger.
I am prepared to do anything to protect the king. Anything. I hope you will understand.
Soren gets lost in thought.
Scene Change
Bait sits on top of the dragon egg and illuminates the dark way while croaking, still carried by Ezran after the successful escape. Callum and Rayla continue to walk down the corridor, watching for any potential threats.
Right, right. that makes sense. Since we go way back. Like that one time, ten minutes ago, when you chased me through the castle trying to stab me? [Laughs] Good times. [Frowns]
Callum and Ezran continue, while Rayla stands back up for a moment to express her slight annoyance, before following them.
Scene Change
Harrow sits on his bed and gazes upon a picture of his beloved late wife Sarai, when the door opens and Viren and Soren walk in. Harrow places the picture face down on the bed and Soren closes the door behind Viren, allowing the two to talk in private.
[Sinking back into his chair with a smile] I see the problem now. [Turns angry] It's that you believe you are special, better than everyone else, above the laws of this kingdom.
[Stands up and stomps his foot] I have tolerated your arrogance for too long, maybe even encouraged it. But if today is my last day as king, you will know your place.
Rayla has made her way onto the castle walls, where a row of guards holds watch nearby. She checks on the guards on the lower ground, then scans the area for Runaan.
The egg wasn't destroyed, it was stolen. Their High Mage was going to use it for dark magic, but the human princes found it, and they're only trying to help--
Callum and Ezran run back towards the tower behind them, as Rayla and Runaan prepare for a standoff on the castle ledge. The clouds part, clearing the skies to reveal the bright full moon.
She searches the desk and shelves for anything of use, then winces at the contents of a jar, picks up an orange feathers, and spills some other ingredients, when she notices the key lying nearby.
[Blows a breath of relief] Well, fun as it would be to turn the chains into snakes, I guess I'll just use the key. [Unlocks her chain]
Scene Change
Callum, Ezran, and Bait are hurrying down the stairs of the castle tower with the dragon egg, panting. They make their way out and stop at a hay cart. Callum sticks his backpack inside the hay, then turns to help the others get inside as well.
Callum takes a step backward at the sight of Viren.
Scene Change
While guards are covering the grounds below the tower, the battle at the top continues. Runaan slashes at Rayla furiously, as Rayla walks backward, ducks, and parries on the edge of a castle tower. She manages to get a hit in, but Runaan parries back and dashes forward while taking multiple swipes at Rayla. She blocks them, but Runaan pushes forward, until the two are stuck in a deadlock.
Runaan kicks Rayla off the ledge with his leg, who slams into a wall and grunts. She barely manages to grab onto the ledge with her blades before swinging herself back onto steady ground, where she needs to dodge incoming arrows without a second to rest. Runaan splits his bow back into two blades, jumps off of the ledge, and powers himself off of a wall to charge Rayla, who parries him off to the side.
[Points a sword to Runaan] You saw the egg. There's no need for vengeance tonight.
Rayla charges at Runaan, who parries. They exchange multiple blows, both continuing to parry the attacks. A short break occurs where Rayla stands, panting and glancing towards the castle tower. Runaan looks over to a tower behind them.
The paw emits a green mist that travels into Callum's mouth and takes out a yellow light. Callums atempts to speak but nothing but air comes out of his mouth, causing him to wheeze when he tries to call out for help. Viren grabs the yellow light as his eyes turn from purple to black.
Scene Change
The courtyard remains heavily patrolled by guards looking out for any threats from every location. Rayla dashes over a rooftop, causing a guard to look over to locate the movement. She spies on some guards passing through the area and creeps up on a guard, throwing a rock to distract him. Rayla walks towards a hay cart, where a blue glow eminates. Changing back to her usual form, she breaks apart the hay to find Bait glowing brightly.
[Annoyed] You impudent little mongrel. You were spoiled and given everything... and that has left you weak and helpless. Tonight, your world is changing, and there is nothing you or anyone can--
The wind howls sharply in the distance, as one by one, the torches blow out, leaving the hallway in a cloud of darkness. The Crownguard soldiers ready their weapons.
Viren slowly walks towards the door when an arrow suddenly flies straight towards Callum. In an instant, Soren pushes him away and allows the arrow to hit his armour instead. Grunting, Soren takes the arrow out of his plate and throws it to the ground, pulling out his sword.
The guards slowly creep forward when Skor launches from out of the stairwell, knocking out two guards, and knee-ing another in the head. The other assassins pile in as Runaan shoots arrows and orders to attack. The assassins and guards struggle against each other, neither of them budging. As Viren walks behind one of the guards, they step backward, accidently hitting him, making him drop the light that came out of Callum's mouth, which then returns to its owner after crossing the battlefield. Callum coughs as he watches Callisto kick against the door to the king's chambers, atempting to break through. Soren swings back at Callisto, who dodges.
Soren manages to push Callisto back, but the Crownguard is soon overwhelmed by the other assassins trying to push their way through. Callum watches in fear, unable to help.
Callum looks back at the doors, where guards continue to fight the elves. Callum looks back and forth, before deciding with a heavy heart that he has no choice but to leave. He flees down the staircase, where he trips over the body of a fallen guard, rising up to find himself staring at another body. Despite a short shock, he continues to run down the stairs, meeting with the others once finally outside in the courtyard.
Rayla and Callum nod at each other, before the group runs towards the castle exit while guards are running in. After sneaking past the guards, they run across the castle bridge, where they glance back at the tower the king is being protected in.
[Worried] Yeah. [Looks up cheerfully] Yeah, of course.
The group runs off into the forest while the castle comes back into focus.
Scene Change
After a long battle, Runaan carries himself toward the balcony of Harrow's chambers, resting against the door where a fallen guard and elf can be seen. Runaan grunts and pants heavily for a struggling moment before heading outside. As he prepares his final arrow, his assassin's binding dyes red, turning into a blood ribbon, falling off his arm. Runaan collapses onto his knees and wraps the ribbon around a shadowhawk arrow, which he then fires.
The arrows tranforms into a blood red shadowhawk and screeches, flying towards the bright moon. As Runaan watches the shadowhawk fly off, Soren puts a sword next to his neck.
[Interrupts] No. We can find more practical uses for this one. Tie him up.
With an unfazed look on his face, Runaan is dragged away.
Scene Change
Team Zym has reached the forest near Katolis, leaving the castle in the distance. Eventually, Rayla stops to look at her right wrist, noticing that her binding has turned into a blood ribbon as well, confirming that Harrow has been slain. In that moment, Runaan's shadowhawk flies over her head, carrying his blood ribbon and the message to the Dragon Queen.
