The Moon Nexus is a beautiful lake, located high atop the Cursed Caldera in the kingdom of Katolis. It is the nexus and the main power source of magical creatures connected to the Moon.
History[]
Thousands of years ago, when Xadia was one land, the ancient ancestors of Moonshadow Elves performed fantastic rituals at a nearby shrine called the Moonhenge. Legends say that they could use the power of the Moon Nexus to open a portal to another plane of existence, a shimmering world beyond life and death, by casting the ritual spell "Mors Aperta" and performing a ritual dance.[1] The nexus was also regularly visited by tourists, scholars, and mages alike, who were able to stay at the moon dorms.[2]
After Xadia was split in two, the Moon Nexus was left in the Human Kingdoms on the western side of the continent. Due to this development, the ancient Moon druids destroyed the Moonhenge themselves, believing it was safer to disable this sacred magical place entirely, rather than let it fall into the hands of evil humans. As an additional safety measure, the elves appointed a guardian to protect the Moon Nexus and its powers from human greed.[3][4]
After peace was reestablished between Xadia and the Human Kingdoms following the battle at the Storm Spire,[5] Rayla, Callum, Ezran, Bait, and Soren traveled to the Moon Nexus to witness Phoe-Phoe's rebirth alongside Lujanne and Allen before they restored the broken Moonhenge, allowing them to access the portal once again.[1]
Two years after the Moon Nexus's portal was reopened, Callum and Rayla used its power to free Runaan, Tiadrin, and Lain from Viren's enchanted coins. However, Rayla chose to free only Runaan because they only had two Quasar Diamonds and because Rayla's parents chose to pass on peacefully.[6]
Information[]
At the Moon Nexus, the light of the full moon reflects perfectly on the lake's surface. It is at this location that the magic of the Moon Primal is at its strongest. A rare kind of blue roses, usually found in the East of Xadia, has survived at the Moon Nexus, drawing on the concentrated power of the Moon arcanum.[2]
The Moon Nexus is protected by the "monsters" of the Cursed Caldera; illusions specifically created by the Moonshadow Elf mage Lujanne to protect the Moon Nexus by scaring people away.[7] Besides being the nexus of the Moonshadow Elves, a portal to a realm between life and death can be opened in the lake's water by performing a certain spell and ritual dance at the nearby Moonhenge shrine, but it will only work if the shrine is in good enough condition. When someone enters the portal, their body floats back up to the water's surface while their soul goes on a journey to the other side. The body must not be pulled from the water while the soul is away, or it will become an empty soulless husk. The soul must return to its body before sunrise, or it will be trapped on the other side forever. While on the other side, a person may be pulled to the souls of the dead they had a connection to, whether they were enemies or loved ones. If the body starts to drown, it cannot be rescued, as the rescuer might get trapped between life and death, although the feather of a Moon Phoenix can serve as a tether to the living world, but the rescuer must not let go of it or they will get trapped as well.[1]
Moon Phoenixes, such as Phoe-Phoe, draw their power from the Moon Nexus and find it more difficult to fly the further they get from it.[8] Upon dying, a Moon Phoenix can leave a "ghost feather" behind, which can be used in a revival ritual at the nexus on the night of the new moon.[1]
Geography[]
The Moon Nexus is located within territory of the Human Kingdoms southwest of the Border and east of Katolis. The nexus's lake lies within a crater on top of the Cursed Caldera.[3]
Trivia[]
- The architectural designs of the Moon Nexus's buildings served as inspiration for the buildings of the Silvergrove. Moon symbolism and motifs are heavily featured in all of the Moonshadow Elf decor.[2]
- The Moon Nexus is currently the only nexus known to be located on the human side of the continent.
