The Magic Mirror, also known as Avizandum's Looking Glass, is an ancient artifact and one of the puzzle pieces given to the Archdragons of Xadia[1] to keep the Startouch Elf Archmage Aaravos contained in his prison.[2] Between all Archdragons, Avizandum was chosen to look after the looking glass. Aaravos eventually shattered the looking glass after meeting Team Zym through it.[1]
Information[]
The looking glass is one of the many artifacts given to the Archdragons to contain the Startouch Elf Aaravos inside his prison. The mirror is enchanted, magically linked to an identical mirror inside Aaravos's prison. When no light reflects off the mirror's surface, it becomes as clear as a window, allowing one to view through its counterpart and glimpse into the prison. Thus, despite not knowing the prison's location, Avizandum was able to keep watch over Aaravos and make sure that he remained trapped and helpless.[3][1] The other mirror works the same way; in total darkness, it allows Aaravos to view through its counterpart to the outside world.[2] No form of dark magic revealing spells shows any effect on the mirror.[4][5]
It appears as an ordinary mirror with a flourished, decorative frame made of gold engraved with Ancient Draconic runes around its reflective center. When translated, these runes spell out "In Darkness, Gaze Upon a Fallen Star".[6]
History[]
300 years before the birth of Azymondias, the magic mirror was created as a part of many puzzle pieces shared between the Archdragons of Xadia to conceal the whereabouts of the prison of the Startouch Elf Archmage Aaravos,[1] who was considered a significant threat to Xadia.[5] This feat required some collaboration between Archdragons and elves.[7] For centuries it was kept inside the Storm Spire, the home of the reigning Dragon King and Queen, Avizandum and Zubeia. Of all the treasures and artifacts housed in the Storm Spire, the mirror is the one they kept closest to where they slept.[4]
On the day Avizandum was slain at the hands of Viren and Harrow,[8] Viren removed the mirror from the dragon lair alongside the egg of the Dragon Prince, assuming it to be of great power, given that the Dragon King and Queen watched over it more closely than any of their other possessions, though he did not actually know what it is or what it does.[4] From this day on, it was kept in his office and later in his secret chambers, concealed by a piece of cloth. Occasionally, Viren would try to reveal the nature of the mirror, using as many as eight reveal spells to try and figure out what is so special about it, all without success.[5] Just when he was about to give up, he absorbed and extinguished the flames he had cast, thus eliminating all light within the room. The mirror revealed Aaravos in his prison, and the two were later able to make contact.[3]
The mirror was left abandoned inside Viren's chambers following his demise,[9] where it was eventually discovered by Callum.[10] From then on, Callum kept the mirror in his office[11] before he deciphered the runes inscribed on the frame through the help of the Tome of Translation.[6] After it was taken back to the Storm Spire and looked into once more, its glass surface was shattered by Aaravos from the other side.[1]
Trivia[]
- The magic mirror's broken shards are used as an illustration for the "Reflections" short stories.
