Magic gems are rare crystalline minerals that contain magical energy of one of the six Primal Sources and are brittle enough to be crushed with bare hands. Like Primal Stones, they can provide primal energy to the person holding it, allowing them to perform spells, even if the Primal Source itself is not readily available. However, unlike Primal Stones, which automatically give the holder primal energy and can be used for an unlimited number of times, utilizing the energy in a magic gem requires the user to crush the gem in their hand in order to release the primal energy, so a magic gem is limited to only a single use. They serve as valuable tools used by non-mages to make up for their lack of spell knowledge.[1]
The Moon[]
The gems connected to Moon magic are known as Moon Opals.[2] They can be used to replicate an event of the past as an illusion through the cast of "Historia Viventem".[3] A Moon Opal was used by Runaan to cast "Mystica-Arbora", a spell of disguising individuals as natural objects such as trees and rocks.[4] Another Moon Opal was used by Rayla to cast "Mystica Canis", a spell of disguising an individual as a dog.[5]
Another gem of the Moon is known as the moonstone, which can be used to create an illusion around certain individuals or objects. Lujanne put one on Ava's collar, to continually maintain an illusion of the fourth leg that Ava lost.[6]
The Sky[]
The gems connected to Sky magic are known as Sky Sapphires.[2]
The Sun[]
The gems connected to Sun magic are known as Fire Rubies.[2] They may be crushed to create fireballs[7] and explosive weapons. After the Mage Wars were over, Fire Rubies in the Human Kingdoms could only be found in a secret cave in Duren.[8]
Another gem of the Sun is known as the sunstone.[9]
The Earth[]
The gems connected to Earth magic are known as Stoneheart Emeralds.[2]
Another gem of the Earth is used by Earthblood Elves of the Drakewood for their bolas that allow them to capture and tame dragons as mounts. These gems appear yellow in color and can briefly light up bright enough to temporarily blind an opponent.[10]
The Ocean[]
The gems connected to Ocean magic are known as Aquamarines.[2] A notable Aquamarine is the Siren Stone, which acts as the singular key of an ancient rune-beacon on the eastern coast of Xadia that is used to summon Domina Profundis.[11][12]
The Stars[]
The gems connected to Star magic are known as Quasar Diamonds. They are made of pure stardust and can be used to cast dark magic spells.[13] Of all the magic gems, Quasar Diamonds are known to be the rarest of them all. There is currently only one Quasar Diamond known to exist in the whole world. There used to be three;[2] two of them were embedded into the Corona of the Heavens, while the third was embedded in the relic staff. One of the two from the Corona was used to free Runaan's spirit from one of Viren's enchanted coins and restore his body. The one from the staff was used to free Aaravos from his prison.[13][14]
Tuning Crystals[]
Tuning crystals are gems that create resonating tone frequencies, resulting in harmonic photo-emissions upon being tapped. They are used to guide travelers through the Crystal Labyrinth of Umber Tor.[2] Their Primal Source is currently unknown.

Trivia[]
- According to Rayla, just holding a Moon Opal made her feel more connected to the Moon, though she still had to actually crush the gem in order to cast a spell.[5]
- Claudia, when told she would need "six simple components" to cast "Amor Stella Vitae", one of them being a Quasar Diamond, she stated that was "more like five simple components and one impossibly rare miracle gem."[13]
