The Key of Aaravos is an ancient, cube-like artifact of great magical power, engraved with the runes of all six Primal Sources. It originally belonged to the Startouch Elf Aaravos. It is currently in the possession of Callum.

Information[]

The Key of Aaravos is a cube-shaped ancient artifact that depicts the symbols of all six Primal Sources on each of its six sides. When in the proximity of magical creatures, flora, or selective other exposure to something that possesses the power of a Primal Source, the symbol for that Primal Source glows in the color associated with the source. It appears to only react with one glow at a time and only to the source that is closest to it.[1]

Each time Callum rolls the cube, no matter where on the continent he is, it leaves marks on the dirt pointing towards the same place, in the direction of the Sea of the Castout, almost as if it is being pulled towards something.[2][3]

Aaravos had a book with a square indentation in the front cover that the Key could be plugged into. It is currently unknown what the book is or what is written in it, but when Aaravos put the Key in with the Earth Primal symbol facing out, the book's cover became covered in rocks, mushrooms, and leaves.[4]

History[]

The Key of Aaravos originally belonged to Aaravos, a Startouch Elf and an Archmage of all six Primal Sources, before his imprisonment at the hands of the Archdragons and elves of Xadia.[5] It eventually came into the possession of the Orphan Queen, a female ancestor of Atticus, Harrow, and Ezran. It was passed down in their family for generations.[6]

King Harrow eventually kept the key in a box of keys inside the Banther Lodge, where Prince Callum retrieved it.[7] In Harrow's letter to Callum, the king tasked his stepson to claim the cube and revealed the myth centering around said key as a means to unlock something of great power in all of Xadia.[8] Throughout Team Zym's journey, the cube reacted to the six individual Primal Sources with its glow.[1]

For two years, the key has remained in the care of Callum, who briefly considered destroying it out of the belief and fear that it may assist Aaravos in taking him on a path of darkness.[9]

After securing Aaravos's prison in Katolis, Callum was on the castle walls and still has the key in his possession. But when the cube's Star rune glowed, Callum initially believed it was reacting to Aaravos. He was then relieved that it was only Stella. While traveling to the Star Scraper, Callum studied the markings it placed on the ground, comparing it to his drawn map.[3]

Trivia[]

  • The Sky rune is on the opposite side of the cube from the Star rune, the Earth rune is opposite of the Moon rune, and the Sun rune is opposite of the Ocean rune.
    • Rayla noted that she had never felt farther from the Moon than she did inside an underground cavern, where Earth Magic is stronger.[10]
    • The protagonist of the series, Callum, is a Sky mage, while the antagonist, Aaravos, is a Star mage.
    • The Sun is capable of fire-based magic, while the Ocean is capable of water-based magic.
