History[]
Hat was born at an unknown point in Xadia before he, Sneezles, and Jellybug were captured by Finnegrin and kept in Scumport to become leviathan bait.[1]
Second Saga[]
Hat, Sneezles, and Jellybug were rescued by Team Zym following Ezran's failed negotiation with Finnegrin.[1] During the journey to the Sea of the Castout, Hat briefly fell overboard and was rescued by Soren and Zym from being eaten by a hungry leviathan. Hat eventually earned his name due to his fondness for perching on Soren's head.[2] Hat, Sneezles, and Jellybug were recaptured by Finnegrin on Sea Legs following the destruction of The Ruthless, but were freed after Elmer chose to turn against and kill his former master.[3] Hat, Sneezles, and Jellybug then accompanied Team Zym in acquiring Aaravos's prison from the Sea of the Castout.[4]
After securing Aaravos's prison, Hat, Sneezles, and Jellybug joined Team Zym in traveling to Katolis, where they were introduced to Opeli and Barius.[5] Hat then joined Zym, Soren, Corvus, and Pyrrah in the search for Zubeia before finding her being under the care and protection of the Earthblood Elf Mukho and the Mushpals of Fungi Lane.[6] Hat, Zym, Soren, Corvus, and Pyrrah eventually returned to Katolis after Ezran had imprisoned Viren in the dungeon.[7][8] During Sol Regem's attack on Katolis, Soren rushed to the dungeon to free Viren after he handed Hat to Opeli, who carried him out of the castle.[9]
Book Five - Ocean[]
Bait & Switch[]
Hat, Sneezles, and Jellybug are kept by Finnegrin in his office at Scumport, and the Tidebound Elf attempts to trade them for Bait with Ezran when the young king tries to find transportation to the Sea of the Castout. The three baby Glow Toads are later rescued by Team Zym before taking off in The Ruthless with Villads, Berto, and Nyx.
Sea Legs[]
Hat, Sneezles, and Jellybug wake Ezran up in his cabin on The Ruthless as the young king realizes that he has not named them yet. Hat quickly perches on Soren's head until he falls overboard after Callum cast "Aspiro" on the sails of The Ruthless. Hat's presence in the water attracts a hungry leviathan, but he is swiftly rescued by Soren and Zym. Upon being pursued by Finnegrin's ship Sea Legs, Callum tells everyone to "hold on to their hats", which inspires Soren in giving Hat his name. Hat stays with Team Zym until they are all captured by Finnegrin on Sea Legs.
Finnegrin's Wake[]
Hat, Sneezles, and Jellybug are kept in a cage inside Finnegrin's cabin before Elmer's change of heart allows him to regain his freedom.
Infantis Sanguine[]
Hat, Sneezles, and Jellybug remain on the rowboat with Bait, Zym, and Soren, while Callum, Rayla, Ezran, and Stella dive into the Sea of the Castout to retrieve Aaravos's prison. Hat, Sneezles, and Jellybug are snuggling with Bait after Callum and his group completed their mission.
Book Six - Stars[]
Startouched[]
Hat, Sneezles, and Jellybug are sleeping alongside Bait as Soren introduces them to Opeli before Team Zym and the High Council agree to hide and protect Aaravos's prison in Katolis.
On the next day, Hat departs from Katolis with Zym, Soren, and Pyrrah to pick Corvus up from the Sunfire Elf camp so they can begin their quest of finding Zubeia, who had gone missing for some time.
Love, War & Mushrooms[]
Hat clings onto Soren's head as they, Zym, and Pyrrah fly towards the Sunfire Elf camp. Hat then perches on Zym's head as they, Soren, and Pyrrah pick Corvus up before heading for the Storm Spire. Hat perches on Soren's head as they and their group trace Zubeia's movements from the Storm Spire to the nearby forest, where they find a mysterious trail of mushrooms. Corvus also tells Hat and Soren to spit out the strange mushrooms they are eating.
Hat bumps Soren's fist as the latter sings about "Camp Katolis" and they alongside Zym and Corvus make camp under a large tree after discovering the last mushroom. The next morning, Hat and his group discover mushrooms surrounding them, only to learn that one of the mushrooms is actually a Mushpal. Hat perches on Zym's head as the Mushpal leads them further into the forest. They soon come across a large Mushpal named Gus that puts them to sleep with his spores.
Hat and his group eventually wake up on Fungi Lane, where they meet Mukho, the Earthblood Elf who has been caring for Zubeia and encourages them to wear mushroom caps so the Mushpals will see them as friends. Hat, Soren, and Corvus wait outside the tree hollow where Zubeia rests after Zym ate mush-mallow to reunite with her.
Before Hat and his group return to Katolis, Soren eats a mush-mallow and perches on Hat's head to become Hat's hat.
The Starscraper[]
Hat, Zym, Soren, Corvus, and Pyrrah return to Katolis before they learn about Ezran imprisoning Viren in the dungeon.
Moonless Night[]
Hat and Zym are resting in the royal chambers as Ezran and Soren discuss Amaya and Janai's wedding before moving on to Viren's presence in Katolis.
We All Fall Down[]
Hat plays with Soren as the latter confesses to Opeli that he did not find her talk on advanced fiscal exercises interesting, for he misheard her saying that the topic was "advanced physical exercises", to her annoyance. However, the meeting is interrupted when Sol Regem attacks Katolis, and Soren keeps Hat beneath his armor to protect him. Hat wakes Soren up shortly after a brick hit the latter's head and caused him to black out temporarily. Soren decides to free Viren from the dungeon and promises Opeli to take care of Hat. Opeli then carries Hat out of the castle as Sol Regem continues his rampage.
