History[]
Harrow was born on January 20th inside the kingdom of Katolis to King Atticus.[1] After her previous husband Damian had died, he was married to Sarai, becoming the adopted father[2] of Callum, and later fathered Prince Ezran. Over the years, he developed a strong friendship with Lord Viren and trusted him as a loyal adviser. Following the death of his father, Harrow was crowned King of Katolis and several days later had a portrait made of himself alongside Viren. Sometime before being crowned as king, he had a dream in which he was visited by Lady Justice. She told him that justice was more than fair decisions and fair consequences, that true justice was a fair system. She then laid before him her scales, sword, and blindfold and told him to choose. He chose the blindfold, a choice she agreed with, as it gives one way to test the system. He should use it to imagine he had not been born yet, and did not yet know anything about himself, such as whether he would be born rich or poor, or the color of his skin. She told him that a fair system should be fair, no matter the accident of one's birth.[3]
One day, Annika and Neha, the Queens of Duren, requested aid for their kingdom due to famine and the upcoming winter. After speaking with Viren, Harrow decided to give them shared resources of his own kingdom, knowingly starving his own people. Days later, Viren proposed a plan to Harrow, which would use the heart of a Magma Titan to create a warm climate to grow food. A party consisting of troops and the monarchs from both kingdoms set out for Xadia.[3] They eventually found the titan and, believing it to be dead, started to break it to get its heart. Not being dead, however, the creature awoke and launched an attack on the troops. After a battle, they managed to kill it and take its heart, but participants were injured and, despite Viren's suggestions to leave them to save time, Harrow took the wounded with them. Just as they were about to cross the Border, they were ambushed by the Dragon King, Avizandum, and the group got separated. Harrow managed to get to safety, but Sarai went back and saved Viren at the cost of her own life. They took the heart to Katolis and used it to grow crops. However, with a broken heart, Harrow had to tell Callum that his mother died during the quest.[4]
Years later, Viren informed Harrow that they would have a chance to avenge Sarai's death by imbuing her spear with the horn of a unicorn, her dying breath, and Harrow's blood. Harrow was initially reluctant, but his anger and hatred towards Avizandum motivated him to kill the Archdragon. Sparing no time, Harrow and Viren traveled to the Storm Spire to confront Avizandum, where the mighty dragon told the pair that it was a special day, and offered an ultimatum: leave or die. Harrow refused to turn away, reminding Avizandum that he never gave Sarai that choice. Harrow proceeded to charge at Avizandum, who was kept from attacking by Viren's magic. Just before Viren could no longer hold Avizandum, Harrow managed to launch Sarai's spear into the dragon's chest, turning him into stone and killing him. Viren deduced that the reason why Avizandum was not guarding the Border was because he was protecting his egg, due to his mate being absent. Viren told Harrow that the egg must be destroyed to keep humanity safe. Harrow refused since the egg had done nothing wrong, but Viren insisted that Avizandum's offspring would destroy the Human Kingdoms to avenge its father. After thinking deliberately, Harrow relented.[5]
First Saga[]
Four months after the death of Avizandum, Harrow awoke one morning to Viren informing him that a band of Moonshadow Elf Assassins had been spotted in Katolis the night before. Realizing that the elves were after him, Harrow made plans to send his sons to the Banther Lodge where they would be safe from harm, while questioning his actions against Avizandum and his egg.[6] Knowing that he did not have a lot of time left, Harrow wrote and gifted a letter to Callum as something to remember him by. When Viren offered to combine a two-headed Soulfang Serpent with dark magic to swap Harrow's soul with another, Harrow refused to live as a coward and chose to accept the consequences of his actions.[7] Harrow returned to his chambers with Pip by his side as he prepared to meet his fate. As Viren tried to convince Harrow again, the king realized how arrogant the High Mage had become and put him in his place. The Moonshadow Elves eventually stormed the castle and Harrow was slain by Runaan during the skirmish.[8] Through Viren's behest, Harrow's body cremated in the Valley of Graves despite Katolis's tradition of burying their monarchs after mourning for seven sunsets.[9]
After his Death[]
Following his death, a memorial was erected for Harrow in the Valley of Graves, matching that of Sarai.[10]
Puzzle House[]
Harrow is in the throne room with Atticus and a pregnant Sarai when Perran, Viren, and Claudia arrive to report the young mage's recklessness with dark magic.
Dreamer's Nightmare[]
Harrow decides to visit the town of Noct alongside Callum, Ezran, Bait, Amaya, and Gren after Otti became its new mayor. Harrow assures Amaya that their visit to Noct is merely a quick diplomatic meeting and its late mayor was a good friend of Queen Sarai. He also reveals he wants to make sure that Otti is in good hands upon inheriting his father's position. Amaya asks if it is also necessary to bring Callum and Ezran with them before Harrow answers that the trip is a good opportunity for them to learn and bond as brothers.
Half a day later, the royal party arrives at Noct and notices that its residents are weary about staying outside. Mayor Otti is surprised to find King Harrow in his town despite Amaya telling him that they confirmed their arrival a month ago. Otti replies that he sent a messenger crow telling them to not come and they should have received it two days ago. Otti demands the royal party to leave Noct and that its people are handling the problem carefully, but Harrow insists Otti to divulge what is going on since the Standing Battalion are the best soldiers in Katolis. Otti reluctantly accepts Harrow's help and decides to show them what has been plaguing Noct.
Later that night, Harrow, Amaya, and Gren learn from Otti that the citizens of Noct have been seeing odd storms coming and going since they expanded the quarry a couple of weeks ago. Some believe that elven magic is responsible for such phenomena, though no elves have been sighted since the time of Otti's great-great-grandmother. The eavesdropping Callum and Ezran accidentally stumble into the room, and Harrow has them sent to their rooms to sleep.
The next evening, Harrow plans to head out to the eastern side of Noct to see if elves are behind the sleeping phenomena. Amaya suggests sending Callum and Ezran back home, but Harrow believes that everyone will be safer together until the situation prompts him to have Amaya's best soldiers escort his sons back to the castle. Callum then asks Harrow if he can join the royal party so he can learn how to be a prince. Harrow reluctantly agrees as long as Callum and Ezran stay close together. Callum promises to keep Ezran safe.
On the next day, Harrow spect with some of Noct's citizens before a storm briefly separates Callum and Ezran. Harrow and Ezran are relieved that both of his sons are unharmed before deciding to send them back to the castle with Amaya's best soldiers. However, the invisible Dream Warden puts him and the other adults to sleep. Harrow and the other adults eventually wake up after Ezran pacified the Dream Warden. Harrow reunites with Callum and Ezran, who reveal the elf temple in the quarry. Harrow decides to have Viren investigate the temple to prevent more sleeping phenomena from occurring in Noct.
Book One - Moon[]
Echoes of Thunder[]
Harrow is woken up by Viren early one morning and, after reminding the High Mage of a previous death threat for such an awakening, is informed of the presence of elven assassins in the surrounding forest. Optimistically recollecting the success of preventing former assassination attempts while petting Pip, the king subsequently recognizes the severity of the situation after finding out that the assassins are Moonshadow Elves. Harrow determines that the best strategy to combat the elves is to attack them directly before the coming of the full moon that night.
As a preventative measure to the present danger, King Harrow decides to send Callum and Ezran to the Banther Lodge. Though he is met by opposition from his sons, Harrow tries to convince the boys of creative ways in which they can enjoy their time at the winter lodge. The king remains insistent in his decision and instructs the boys to pack for the trip.
What is Done[]
Harrow stands with Viren at a window and tells his friend that he is ready to accept his fate. Viren assures him that he and his daughter Claudia are still searching for a creative solution, which Harrow immediately unmasks as dark magic. When Harrow expresses his disdain for this kind of solution, Viren claims that he does not understand what he means and is ordered to leave the room afterward.
Later on, Harrow meets Callum inside the throne room, where he begins to try to express his feelings for his stepson. Finding it hard to say the right words, he hands Callum a letter and states that he will understand in time, wanting the seal to be broken when he has been killed. Callum begs him to try and make peace with the elves and dragons, but Harrow is unable to shake the many centuries of history, as he is responsible for many mistakes that led to this outcome. He states that what is done cannot be undone and that he will pay the price for his crimes. When Callum believes that he can do anything as a king, Harrow envies him for his innocent view of the world. After Harrow asks Callum to take care of Ezran once he is gone, the two share a long embrace, and Harrow tears up, knowing it will be their last one.
As Harrow is dressed in armor for the upcoming fight, Viren approaches him with a mysterious basket in his hand. The High Mage reminds his king that Moonshadow Elves can not be stopped and that his death will be inevitable unless they would find a way to replace him. He introduces a two-headed Soulfang Serpent, a creature capable of consuming the spirit of its prey, while this specific two-headed specimen can contain two souls at once. Viren suggests Harrow in switching his soul with a willing volunteer, fooling the Moonshadow Elves into believing he had died. Although he states that many soldiers are willing to give their lives, Harrow does not wish to die like a coward, but rather as a noble king. He claims that the use of dark magic caused nothing but trouble, leading Viren to insult him as ungrateful. Harrow questions if he should feel grateful for the death of Avizandum, the destruction of his egg and starting an unwinnable war, not understanding why it had been necessary for an innocent egg to be destroyed. Viren insists that doing so saved humanity, which is only responded to through a heavy sigh from Harrow. When Viren brings up once more that his men would be willing to die for Harrow, the king asks if Viren himself would be willing to make this sacrifice, which the High Mage has no answer for. Harrow orders him to get out.
Moonrise[]
Harrow puts on his crown before he accepts his sword from Soren, then marches out into the courtyard and up the tower to his chambers, accompanied by his loyal Crownguard. Once alone, he practices a few sword swings before Pip descends onto his shoulder and the two share a few last nuzzles.
As night falls, Harrow sits on his bed and gazes upon a picture of Sarai, when he is disturbed by Viren entering the room. Harrow questions why his adviser has returned the Soulfang Serpent to him but allows him to explain himself. Viren reminds him of their friendship and that he sees Harrow as a brother, which the king misunderstands as an attempt to use their special relationship to put himself above the opinion of others, as well as the laws of Katolis. Harrow accuses Viren of wasting the precious time he has left and orders him to address him as "Your Highness" before emphasizing that Viren is still his servant who belongs on his knees.
Harrow is not seen again after, but is later confirmed as dead when Runaan emerges on the balcony of the royal chambers and the assassin binding resembling Harrow's life falls off.
Book Two - Sky[]
Breaking the Seal[]
In a flashback narrated by Viren, Harrow is crowned the new King of Katolis days after his father's passing. He tells Sarai about how Lady Justice came to him in a dream and how she inspired him to make a difference in his kingdom. Several days later, Queens Annika and Neha of Duren arrive at Katolis to seek help after a seven-year famine threatens to destroy their kingdom. Without hesitance, Harrow agrees to share Katolis's resources with Duren. Viren advises Harrow that he made his decision too soon and that thousands of Katolians will die, but Harrow does not wish to turn his back on people in need.
As the people of Katolis share what they have with Duren, Viren suggests to Harrow that they hunt down and retrieve the heart of a Magma Titan in Xadia to perform a dark magic spell that can bring fertility to their kingdoms. Sarai disapprove the idea since the plan feels too easy and that taking the life of an innocent creature to save thousands will create a problem. Harrow remains adamant of the idea and leads an expedition to Xadia and wait for nightfall so they can enter Xadia after Avizandum, the King of the Dragons, finishes his patrol around the Border. The expedition eventually finds a Magma Titan lying on the ground and decides to cut its heart open. However, the Magma Titan reveals itself to be alive and decides to attack the humans.
Heart of a Titan[]
After Callum opens the letter, he learns that Harrow intentionally keeps his distance from Callum so that he will not replace Callum's birth father. Harrow also professes that even though Callum is his stepson, he loves and cares about him as if he is his own.
Continuing to tell the story in his letter, Harrow watches in fear as the Magma Titan towers over Sarai, almost able to attack her before the previous attacks finally cause its body to crumble. Once his group is able to harvest the heart of the creature, Harrow declares that they shall head back as fast as possible, as not to be seen by the Dragon King. Although Viren suggests the wounded to be left behind and Sarai agrees to take care of them, Harrow refuses to leave anyone on enemy grounds. Harrow helps to carry back the wounded when they almost arrive at the entrance to the Breach, yet their luck takes a turn when the shadow of the Dragon King darkens the sun. He is quickly willing to hold off the enemy when Annika and Neha volunteer to step in. He receives the queens' ring before heading back to his men to help them carry the heart. Together with the help of Viren, the queens manage to hold Avizandum off for long enough for the group to reach the entrance, when Sarai decides to turn back to retrieve Viren, as the queens had given their lives in the fight and could no longer help him. Harrow explains to Callum that the last time he had seen his mother, she told him she would see him on the other side, a meaning that grew much sadder after Avizandum eventually killed her as well.
Harrow returns to Duren and the heart allows the kingdom to flourish. However, once back in Katolis, he is forced to tell Callum about how his mother had died in battle and how life sometimes changes unexpectedly, wishing it had been him who had given his life instead.
In his letter, Harrow expresses his selfish wish for Callum and Ezran to cut the chains of the past and live a free life, which they can create in their own imagination. Finally, he elaborates on the secret he promised to share with him, a magical cube that he had stashed away inside the Banther Lodge's game room. He calls it the "Key of Aaravos", an ancient relic that once belonged to an elven Archmage called Aaravos. He hopes for Callum to be the person who discovers the powers it may unlock inside Xadia. As a special bonus, he tells Callum that Bait secretly likes belly rubs.
The Book of Destiny[]
Harrow appears inside Callum's dark magic-induced fever dream, where he is sitting on a chained throne. When Callum reaches out for the dark magic cube and is told that it is his destiny to give in to the dark arts, Harrow states that Callum is free from his past and expectations and that fate is a lie. After the dark image of himself dissolves, Callum exclaims that the experience has been horrifying and looks at Harrow, who then states that it is his dream before the throne retracts backward into nowhere.
Book Three - Sun[]
Thunderfall[]
When Viren tells Aaravos about the day Avizandum was slain, Harrow appears in a flashback dating back just months before his assassination. The king joyfully engages in a game of hide and seek with Bait and Ezran, when Viren enters the room and is quickly invited to join the next round. After Harrow sends Ezran out to play, Viren informs his friend that an opportunity to avenge Queen Sarai has come up, suggesting that they could slay Avizandum. Harrow declares him to be crazy, as the Dragon King matches the powers of a god and reminds him how many armies have fallen in battle against him. His curiosity is sparked when the mage claims to have found a powerful spell.
Viren tells Harrow how he obtained Sarai's dying breath in a jar and that Claudia managed to capture a unicorn and brought its horn. The High Mage will also need Harrow's blood in order to create the ultimate weapon of vengeance. Harrow is initially unwilling to commit such dangerous act, but the memory of how the Archdragon took Sarai from him and her sons convinced him to take revenge.
When Harrow and Viren reach the Border, they are unable to find Avizandum before realizing that he must be in his lair. The pair eventually ride for the Storm Spire where the Dragon King confronts and warns them to leave unharmed. Harrow bitterly refused since Avizandum never gave Sarai that choice and angrily charges before throwing the spear into the dragon's chest, petrifying and killing him. Harrow claims that the mission is completed, but Viren realizes that Avizandum was guarding his egg in his mate's stead and that the egg must be destroyed so it will never try to avenge its father. The proposition horrifies Harrow, but after a deliberate thinking, he reluctantly allows Viren to destroy Avizandum's egg.
Book Five - Ocean[]
Old Wounds[]
Viren comes across Harrow in his dark magic-induced fever dream, with the latter resurrecting himself after Runaan shot an arrow into his heart. Harrow apologizes to the kneeling Viren for being so cruel in their final hour together before hugging him and confessing that he always viewed the High Mage as his brother. The surprised Viren slowly returns the hug and says that he did what he had to do to show that he means something to Harrow. Harrow agrees before stating that Viren's soul is his treasure. Viren is alarmed by what Harrow just said before he was distracted by the screeching Pip. When Viren turns back to Harrow, he sees his former king wielding the relic staff. Harrow then uses the staff and a dark magic spell to capture Viren's soul.
Book Six - Stars[]
Moment of Truth[]
Harrow appears in a flashback when he considered proposing to Sarai, even though it had been one year since her first husband Damian died. Harrow does not want to complicate Sarai's life, but Viren encourages him to propose to her because life is complicated and nothing matters when it comes to love.
