History[]

Gren was born inside Katolis on January 17th. At some point, he joined his kingdom's military and eventually rose to the rank of commander and second-in-command in the kingdom's Standing Battalion. During this time he had become a close friend, confidant and sign language interpreter for General Amaya.[1]

First Saga[]

Gren were among the soldiers who accompanied Amaya to the Banther Lodge to check on Callum and Ezran and translated her speech throughout their conflict with Rayla inside the building. After Rayla was able to let the soldiers take Callum and Ezran away, Amaya and Gren sent Corvus to follow them from the safe distance. Gren and Amaya eventually rode as fast as the could to stop Viren from being crowned as the new King of Katolis.[1] Gren acted as Amaya's translator when she confronted Viren about potentially taking over the throne after Harrow's death before he was ordered to remain in the castle to keep a close eye on the High Mage. However, Viren was able to trick Gren and had him chained in the dungeon.[2] Gren remained as Viren's prisoner after the latter used dark magic to imprison Runaan inside an enchanted coin.[3]

Gren eventually grew a stubble due to his inability to shave during imprisonment.[4] He was also able to remain positive, much to Viren's exasperation.[5]

Shortly after Viren was arrested for treason, the guards of the castle were able to locate and free Gren, which allowed him to journey to the Border and reunite with Amaya. Gren followed through with Amaya's plan in destroying The Breach with explosives to prevent from Sunfire Elves initiating an invasion. When Janai cut the cable off, Gren watched as Amaya successfully detonating the explosives by herself and allowed herself to be captured by the Sunfire Elves.[6] Gren would later join Ezran's loyalists in protecting the Storm Spire and reunited with Amaya before witnessing Azymondias reunite with Zubeia.[7]

Second Saga[]

Gren accompanied Amaya and Janai in helping the Sunfire Elves settle in their new camp after the fall of Lux Aurea. He helped Janai in arranging a traditional Sunfire Elf marriage proposal ceremony and witnessed Amaya accepting the proposal.[8] Gren would later officially congratulate the couple in the royal tent and translated Amaya's sense of humor to her future brother-in-law Karim.[9] Gren was having a laugh with Marcos one night when they were alerted by the dispute between Lucia and Yonnis, which resulted in Yonnis burning Lucia's hands after she extinguished his Soul Candle.[10] Gren explained the incident to Amaya in the following day and informed Lucia that Janai would be the one to decide her fate.[11] Gren translated Amaya's disagreement about the Sunfire Elves holding the "Tribunal of the Six Horns" that would result in Lucia's execution if she was found guilty, but he nevertheless attended to interpret Amaya's defense. Gren witnessed Janai ultimately sparing Lucia from death so that the architect could make amends by building a shrine where Soul Candles could burn without threatening the camp.[12]

Gren greeted and led Callum, Rayla, Bait, and Stella when they arrived at the Sunfire Elf camp to inform their plan of finding a way to defeat Aaravos inside the Great Bookery of Lux Aurea.[13] Gren joined Amaya and Kazi in accompanying the group to the Great Bookery, and he helped in translating Amaya's words of advice to Rayla. Gren and Kazi were able to return to the Sunfire Elf camp on the Shadowpaw.[14] After Kim'dael abducted Janai, Gren and Kazi informed the returning Amaya and Corvus of the situation[15] before Pharos arrived at the camp to deliver Karim's ultimatum.[16] Although Amaya was able to rescue Janai, the dejected Gren, Corvus, and Kazi were forced to notify them that Miyana had defected to Karim's side.[17]

Book One - Moon[]

Bloodthirsty[]

Gren first appears when he arrives at the Banther Lodge together with his general Amaya, where he signs in her stead, seeing as she is deaf. Not long after talking to Callum and Ezran for a while, he notices that Amaya acts strange and signs to her, asking what is wrong and notices the open window. Gren enters the Banther Lodge with Amaya after she kicks in the door and translates for her while Callum tries to indirectly warn Rayla about the human troops that have just arrived by shouting. He later hands Amaya a letter. Upon realizing that Rayla is inside the house, Amaya knocks her out and ties her up, where Gren once again translates both parts of the conversation. When the fight moves outside, he stands behind Amaya and the other soldiers and continues to translate for everyone until Team Zym manages to flee. After sending Corvus to follow Team Zym from a distance, Amaya and Gren ride to the castle to stop Viren's coronation.

An Empty Throne[]

Gren signs for Amaya inside the throne room, where she confronts Viren about his failure in protecting King Harrow from being assassinated and accuses him of hoping for this outcome, as it creates opportunity for him to take over the kingdom. When Amaya later visits the memorial statue of Sarai, Gren carefully watches Viren and translates for Amaya when she tells Viren that she has discovered a load of "bull droppings", as he translates for the sake of censoring the actual word. While he translates Amaya's intention to change the leader of the search group to retrieve Callum and Ezran, he realizes that his friend has assigned him the leadership, which he joyfully repeats to himself seeing as he needs a moment to process the honor he has received.

At sundown, he has gathered together with his general and comrades, where he is warned by Amaya to be wary of Viren, as he will stab him in the back, and Gren promises to be careful. After hearing that Amaya trusts him to find the boys, he hugs her before seeing her off. As soon as she is gone, Gren is informed by Viren that he will no longer be in charge of the mission and naively agrees to meet with him and Soren at night to discuss the disagreement. He is thrown into the dungeon where he is chained and gets to express his concerns about Viren's decision, but it does not really change anything, seeing as he is chained already.

Cursed Caldera[]

After offering Runaan some Xadian oranges, Viren passes Gren, who states that he would love to try a piece of fruit, but is ignored. Later, Gren is whistling inside the dungeon, when he hears a chilling scream from Runaan in the other room. Suspicious, he tries to spy what is happening behind the door and widens his eyes in shock upon seeing Viren step outside, whose appearance is now heavy altered, with marks stretching across his eyes after the use of dark magic.

Book Two - Sky[]

Half Moon Lies[]

As Viren enters the dungeon, Gren jovially greets him with a "good morning" before changing it to a "good whatever-time-it-is" due to his inability to tell the current part of the day. Viren simply ignores Gren as he returns to Runaan's old cell that currently houses the magic mirror.

Fire and Fury[]

When Viren enters the dungeon to return to the magic mirror, Gren cheerfully welcomes him back. Upon being asked how he could stay so cheerful in his dire circumstances of being chained, Gren informs Viren that he rather views himself as chained up rather than chained down, then gives him a thumbs up. Viren claims to admire his tenacity.

Book Three - Sun[]

Sol Regem[]

After finally being rescued from the dungeon, Gren rejoins the Standing Battalion at the Border and shares an affectionate hug with Amaya, then mirrors her when signaling the battalion's salute. Amaya playfully questions his new beard and Gren signs that the two of them have a lot to catch up on before being interrupted by Lieutenant Fen, who wants to know where their reinforcements are. He responds that the reinforcements are not coming, as Viren has been arrested for treason to the kingdom while signing the same to Amaya. He then translates for Amaya, who does not want to simply abandon their post but to destroy the Breach instead to prevent a potential attack by the Sunfire Elves.

Once inside the Breach, Gren is with his group when they are installing explosives to destroy the path that connects their territory with Xadia and translates for Amaya when she signs that all preparations are done. When it's time to detonate, he gives the order for his general, before realizing that the rope has been cut by Janai. Amaya volunteers to detonate the barrels manually, to which Gren responds that she would not survive it. As she rides off, he is asked by Fen what she had signed and he translates that she said the rest would survive even if she would not. He then watches Amaya charge into battle with Janai and rushes to her aid when he realizes the Breach would explode while she is still inside, but fails to reach her as the explosion blocks his way.

The Final Battle[]

Gren accompanies the armies of Duren and Ezran's loyalists in aiding the defenders of the Storm Spire against Viren's forces. As soon as the battle is over, Gren reunites with Amaya once again and embraces her tightly, then wipes building tears from his eyes. He translates when Amaya expresses her concern for Viren still being found missing. After Viren is defeated, Gren joins everyone inside the Storm Spire, where he bows to his new king, Ezran, before joining everyone to watch Zubeia awaken from her deep slumber.

Book Four - Earth[]

Rebirthday[]

Gren and Amaya help Janai in building a camp for the Sunfire Elves after the fall of Lux Aurea. One day, Janai brings Gren and Amaya on horseback to a forest not far from the camp for a "secret mission" that Amaya does not know about. Gren translates Amaya's concern on Janai being discreet, but Janai assures them that they will understand soon. They eventually dismount their horses and Gren accompanies Janai to have a look around, leaving Amaya alone.

When Gren and Janai return to Amaya with flowers, they are surprised to see that the general has incapacitated three Sunfire Elves who are in fact flame ribbon dancers who perform in a traditional Sunfire Elf marriage proposal ceremony. Gren watches as Amaya happily accepts Janai's proposal and compliments Janai's signing before correcting her that she asked Amaya to "wrestle her" instead of to "marry her".

Fallen Stars[]

Gren enters the royal tent to congratulate and hug both Amaya and Janai for their engagement as "the world's most formidable couple" before translating Amaya's teasing on Janai's younger brother Karim. Gren then walk to the other side of the tent to chat with Amaya as they watch Janai leaving with Karim.

Through the Looking Glass[]

Gren is having a laugh with Marcos in the Sunfire Elf camp when they are alerted by the dispute between Lucia and Yonnis.

The Great Gates[]

Gren is calming down some of the soldiers during the morning after the dispute between Lucia and Yonnis when Amaya arrives and hugs him before asking if he is hurt. Gren tells Amaya that he is fine although Lucia's hands were accidentally burned by Yonnis's fire after she extinguished his Soul Candle.

Later in the evening, Gren translates Amaya's words to Lucia about having guards in her new bedroom as a precaution and that some of the camp's residents are upset due to her action. Gren also orders Lucia to not return to her tent so that she will remain safe before informing her that Janai will be the one to decide her fate.

The Drakewood[]

Gren translates Amaya's incredulity to Janai and Karim about Lucia facing justice for putting out a candle and that she is the one who ended up getting burned. Karim tells them that Lucia profaned a sacred rite and is infuriated when Gren translates Amaya's comparison of the incident with a birthday celebration. Karim pressures Janai into calling a "Tribunal of the Six Horns" to determine Lucia's fate and reveals to Gren and Amaya that Lucia will be executed if she is found guilty.

During the Tribunal of the Six Horns, Gren translates Amaya's plea to the Six Horns about Lucia's callousness and carelessness while also asking for a compassionate justice since no one gains anything if they throw away the chance to learn and grow. The Six Horns declare Lucia as guilty, but Janai ultimate pardons Lucia and allows her to make amends by building a shrine where Soul Candles can burn without threatening the camp.

Book Five - Ocean[]

Nightmares & Revelations[]

Gren greets Callum, Rayla, Bait, and Stella when they arrive at the Sunfire Elf camp on their Shadowpaw. Gren takes the group to the royal tent while explaining that the humans and the elves in the camp are getting along despite some disagreements. Gren is then surprised that Callum's group are oblivious to Amaya's engagement with Janai, but he decides to let them find out on their own. Shortly after entering the royal tent, Gren catches Callum's staff when the mage hugs and congratulates Amaya for her and Janai's upcoming wedding. Gren then listens to Callum and Rayla elaborating their plan of going into the Great Bookery of Lux Aurea to research for a way to defeat Aaravos before Janai forbids them due to the corrupted creatures that are infesting the fallen city.

Gren and Amaya are able to catch Callum's group in their attempt of sneaking out from the camp. Gren and Amaya call Callum out for being a bad liar before they reveal their intention of accompanying the group to Lux Aurea alongside Kazi. After Janai gave the group her blessing and her Sunforge sword to Amaya, Gren rides with Kazi on his horse.

The Great Bookery[]

Gren and the rest of Callum's group ride through Lux Aurea's desolate streets before they arrive at the Great Bookery. While Callum, Kazi, Bait, and Stella search for a possible method of killing Startouch Elves, Gren translates the words of advice that Amaya is giving to Rayla. Gren smiles when Rayla thanks Amaya with a hug.

Soon after, everyone realize that the sun is setting and Gren chooses to ride back to the Sunfire Elf camp with Kazi on the Shadowpaw. Amaya and Rayla stay behind to fetch Callum who is still reading inside the Great Bookery.

Sea Legs[]

Gren and Kazi are tending to the soldiers who survived Kim'dael's attack before they reunite with Amaya and Corvus who succeeded in surviving the Great Bookery. After sharing a hug with Amaya, Gren and Kazi inform her and Corvus that Janai had been abducted.

Finnegrin's Wake[]

Gren is inside the royal tent when Corvus reports to him, Amaya, and Kazi that no one in the entire camp was able to find a single trace of Janai's abductor. Gren and Amaya tell Corvus to rest and heal when they heard a commotion outside of the tent, which turns out to be the other Sunfire Elves branding Pharos as a traitor.

Pharos presents Karim's ultimatum to have Miyana personally deliver the Sun Seed in exchange for Janai's freedom. Gren and Amaya encourage the Six Horns to refuse the trade, which leads to Amaya disguising herself as Miyana to deliver a tied up Pharos back to Karim.

Infantis Sanguine[]

Gren is surveying the map of the Sunfire Elf camp with Corvus and Kazi inside the royal tent when the guards announce Amaya and Janai's return. Amaya and Janai are confused by the despondent looks that Gren, Corvus, and Kazi are giving them. When Janai asks if there is something wrong, Corvus reveals to everyone that Miyana had betrayed Janai and defected to Karim's side.
