Finnegrin's Wake is the forty-fourth episode of The Dragon Prince. It is the eighth chapter of the fifth book, "Ocean".
Held captive aboard the Sea Legs, Callum and his crew must dig deep to win their freedom. Janai faces her brother once again.
Plot[]
Sea Legs is sailing through the ocean when Finnegrin enters his cabin where Callum is chained while Bait, Zym, Stella, Sneezles, Hat, and Jellybug are locked in cages. Finnegrin tells Callum that Nyx was able to bargain for her freedom after she gave him something he wanted and that he can guarantee the mage's freedom if he is willing to reveal a specific dark magic spell. When Callum refuses, Finnegrin orders Elmer to torture the human with a pair of Sea Anemones.
At the Sunfire Elf camp, Corvus is using a crutch when he reports to Amaya, Gren, and Kazi that no one was able to find a trace of Janai's abductor. Amaya and Gren encourage Corvus to rest and heal since Janai's strength will allow her to survive the ordeal. The meeting is interrupted when they heard a commotion outside of the royal tent, and Amaya is angered to learn that Pharos is involved in Janai's abduction.
The bruised and battered Callum assures the worried Bait that he is alive when Finnegrin returns. Finnegrin manages to make Callum disclose about the time when he used dark magic to transform some chains into snakes so that he could rescue his friends. Finnegrin reveals his desire to learn the spell Harrow used to slay Avizandum so that he can use it to kill Domina Profundis.
Pharos presents Karim's ultimatum to Amaya, Gren, and the Six Horns: Janai will be safely returned to the camp if Miyana delivers the Sun Seed to him. Amaya and Gren refuse since Janai values the Sun Seed, the future of her people, more than her own life. Pharos adds that Karim will have Janai killed if Amaya continues to make her choice clear.
Callum is shocked that Finnegrin wants to kill the Archdragon of the Ocean before he asks the Tidebound Elf why he wants her dead. Finnegrin reveals that Sea Legs had a sister, another Giant Hermit Crab named Shelley, who was his ship for more than 40 years that helped him take down leviathans and krakens across Xadia's seas. When Domina Profundis learned about Finnegrin's exploits, she responded by killing Shelley. Although Domina spared Finnegrin, she vowed to drown him herself if she ever sees him a mile offshore again. Finnegrin believes that Domina Profundis's existence prevents him from claiming his freedom, but Callum scoffs at the idea since the Tidebound Elf only wants to control the entire ocean. Offended, Finnegrin decides to take Callum to the ship's deck where he can prove his point to the captured Team Zym. Finnegrin explains to Team Zym that thieves traditionally have one of their hands cut off as punishment for stealing. He then gives Callum the choice to take one of his friends' hands or watch all of them lose their hands. Ezran, Rayla, Soren, and Villads offer to have their hands taken to spare Callum from choosing, which baffles Finnegrin in return. As Callum explains that friends are willing to risk life and limb for one another, Finnegrin chooses to tempt him into freeing Team Zym with an embalmed snake's rattle that he can use to transform the chains into snakes.
Karim and Kim'dael are waiting near a rock formation when he spots who he believes to be Miyana delivering the Sun Seed on horseback. Kim'dael vanishes just before the rider reveals herself to be a disguised Amaya delivering a tied up Pharos. Amaya evades the fireballs Karim conjured with "Missilem Ignem" and succeeds in hitting his face with her mask and her fist. Kim'dael then brings Janai out to prevent Amaya from killing Karim.
Finnegrin asks Callum if dirtying himself with dark magic is something he will not do despite his willingness to rescue his friends. Rayla encourages Callum to not practice dark magic again right as she frees herself from her chains using the splinter she covertly bit off from Elmer. But before Rayla can attack Finnegrin, he freezes her blood with "Venus Frigoris", causing her to writhe in pain as Callum rushes to her side. The enraged Callum proceeds to punch Finnegrin in the face, which shocks Elmer and the rest of the crew. Finnegrin responds by ordering Elmer to knock Callum out.
Back in Finnegrin's cabin, Callum wakes up to find Finnegrin planning to feed Rayla to a leviathan with a caged Bait as the lure. Filled with desperation, Callum reveals the ingredients required for the dark magic spell that is possesses the power to kill an Archdragon. However, Finnegrin replies that the deal is no longer on the table and exits the cabin with Bait.
Kim'dael tells Karim to release her from the Mercy Debt if he wants her to kill Janai. Despite Janai telling Karim not to, he says the words required to free Kim'dael, only for nothing to happen at all. Janai laughs since only the monarch of Lux Aurea possesses the power to release Kim'dael as Pharos quietly frees himself from his bonds. Karim decides to kill Janai so that he will become the Sunfire King, only for Amaya to scar his left eye with Janai's sword. Knowing that she will never be freed from the Mercy Debt if both Janai and Karim are killed in the skirmish, Kim'dael agrees to spare the Sunfire Queen and promises to meet her again. Kim'dael kisses Janai's cheek and departs on her own free will. Amaya and Janai reunite with an embrace before Pharos casts "Finales Funkeln" so that he and Karim can escape on horseback.
Rain falls on Sea Legs when Finnegrin successfully uses Bait to lure in a leviathan before he orders his crew to lower Rayla to the water. Callum somehow is able to break free from his chains before he casts both "Ferrum Venti" and "Levare Ventum" to lift Rayla back to the ship. Finnegrin then casts "Venus Frigoris" to prevent Callum from performing "Fulminis" properly. As Callum's experience his blood freezing, he connects with the Ocean arcanum after accepting there are things that can never be controlled. Callum frees himself with "Terminus ad Glacium" and calls Finnegrin's insecurity out before the latter orders Elmer to beat Callum up again. Soren then approaches Elmer and tells him that he does not have to do anything that Finnegrin says after being called worthless and given insulting nicknames. However, Elmer chooses to hit Soren when Finnegrin tells him to. Elmer asks Soren why he keeps on getting up, and Soren says that he knows what Elmer is feeling due to his past experiences with Viren. When Soren tells Elmer that he does not have to be cruel like Finnegrin, Elmer is finally fed up with Tidebound Elf constantly calling him "Deadwood" and lifts his former boss off the deck of Sea Legs. Upon revealing his true name, Elmer tosses Finnegrin to the leviathan's mouth and frees Team Zym from their bonds. Villads frees Berto from his hat as he assumes command of Sea Legs as Nyx returns to the ship. Rayla and Villads call Nyx out for deserting Team Zym, but the Skywing Elf explains that she always had Team Zym's best interests at heart all along and fooled Finnegrin into taking Sea Legs to the Sea of the Castout after she made a claim about hunting for a treasure there.
Rayla then walks to Callum and teases him for connecting with two Primal Sources before becoming concerned due to his somber expression. Callum assures Rayla that he is doing well and silently returns her hug, keeping the truth about using dark magic to transform his chains into snakes to himself.
