Magic Spells can be cast by mages. The act of casting a spell is done by harnessing the energy of a Primal Source, notably through a direct connection with the Primal Source via its arcanum or by the energy being provided by holding a Primal Stone or crushing a magic gem. Another option is to siphon the primal energy out of the body of a magical creature. That energy can then be directed to act in certain way, often through the use of spoken incantations or runes of light fingered or drawn with staffs in midair. Primal spells are typically cast through Ancient Draconic incantations and runes, whereas dark magic spells are often cast through incantations in which the mage speaks backward.

Notably, when casting a primal spell, the rune follows the mage and moves with them.[1]

To cast primal spells, a mage requires a certain amount of primal energy. The energy of each of the six Primal Sources is stronger or weaker depending on how readily available the Primal is in the surrounding area; for example, Earth magic does not work well out at sea, and Moon magic is at its most powerful on the night of the full moon. If they have a Primal Stone or magic gem, then they can access the full power of that Primal Source regardless of external circumstances. But if not, then their magic is at the mercy of the world around them; for example, some Sky magic spells can only be cast during a storm or at least require a strong breeze.[2][3] Additionally, the runes must be drawn precisely by hand, or at least by a magic staff, and the magic itself is sometimes tied to the physical ability of the user, just like "Aspiro" requires a mage to blow air from their lungs, and "Manus. Pluma. Volantus." requires a mage to use their arms to fly.

Moon Magic[]

Creatura Ficta

A spell that creates an illusionary creature that appears lifelike and has a mind on its own, based on a nearby physical object.[4] It translates to "fictional creature".

Curso Perpendiculum

A spell that allows an individual to run on a wall at a 90° degree angle for a short distance. It translates to "running straight".[4]

Fit Invisibilia

A spell cast by Phase Moon Dragons and Moon mages which causes them to fade from sight after using bright moonlight to shimmer.[5] The etymology of the spell derives from the Latin "Fit" and "Invisibilia", which directly translates to "becoming invisible".

Ghosting

"Ghosts" are Moonshadow Elves who are effectively banished by their community for dishonorable actions. The spell prevents the caster from being able to see or hear the person who was "ghosted", and the caster appears faceless to the "ghosted" person. However, "ghosts" can still be seen through reflections. The spell is also extended to any other beings who enter the Silvergrove with a "ghosted" Moonshadow Elf, these other beings would also not be seen or heard by the caster and would also see the caster as faceless. Being ghosted is a unanimous community decision that has to be discussed by all members of the Silvergrove and is not taken lightly.[6] Ghosting is not a mass spell, it only effects the caster specifically, so if any member of the community does not perform the spell, then they would still be able to perceive the ghosted person normally. Ghosting can also be temporarily interrupted when an elf touches hands with those that have been "ghosted", though the requirements are currently unknown.[7]

Historia Viventem

This spell allows a mage to create a realistic, shimmering blue illusion that replays events that happened in the past, though only past events that happened in the area where the spell is cast. The illusion shows structures as they once were, objects that were once there, as well as the people who were there and the actions they carried out. The illusion also recreates sounds and repeats spoken words. The caster can choose the point in history they wish to see; Lujanne used this this spell to show Callum the ancient Moon magic rituals of Moonshadow Elves from thousands of years ago, before the split of Xadia,[8] and Callum used it to see Rayla's parents on the day the egg of Azymondias was stolen months earlier. It can be cast using a Moon Opal.[9] The etymology of the spell derives from the Latin "Historia", meaning "history", and "Viventem", meaning "living being". Therefore, the incantation could best be read as "living history".

Illusions

Illusion magic can be exhibited by experienced Moon mages. They are capable of creating illusions; from giant monsters[10] to duplicates of themselves and others. These illusions can also be cast to create disguises for a Moon mage, such as when Lujanne disguised herself as a human.[11] Lujanne was also able to make an illusion appear solid by applying the illusion onto a physical object.[12]

Liga Et Annecto

A spell that is cast to activate Ethari's Wingalings, a device serving to alert him of potentially perilous situations that the user of his Wingaling's counterpart find themselves in.[13] The etymology of the spell derives from the Latin "Liga", "Et", and "Annecto", which directly translates to "bind and connect".

Lumen Saltans

A spell that causes moonbeam lights to shimmer, pop and dance from a mage's hand. It translates to "dancing light".[4]

Lumen Terebramus Acuto

A spell that is cast to enchant gems with the light of the moon during the night of the Harvest Moon, and the gems are used to embed an enchantment into the core of an arrow. The etymology of the spell derives from the Latin "Lumen", "Terebra", and "Acutus", roughly translating to "I pierce with light".[13]

Manifestum Corpus

A spell cast by Phase Moon Dragons to manifest their bodies.[5] The etymology of the spell derives from the Latin "Manifestum" and "Corpus", which directly translate to "clear/obvious body".

Manifestum Incorpus

A spell that turns an object incorporeal for a short time. It does not work on people. It translates to "clear/obvious body".[4]

Mors Aperta

Before its destruction by ancient Moonshadow Elves, the Moonhenge was once used by the said elves to open a portal to a world between life and death in the Moon Nexus's lake, allowing living people to visit the otherworldly realm. This ritual involves performing a dance and speaking the Ancient Draconic incantation.[12] The etymology of the spell derives from the Latin "Mors", meaning "death", and "Aperta", which means "to open" or "to unlock". Therefore, the incantation could be read as "open/unlock death".

Mystica Canis

A spell that disguises an individual as an illusion of choice. It was cast by Rayla to turn Azymondias into a dog to fool Rex Igneous. It translates to "magic dog".[14]

Mystica-Arbora

A spell that allows elves to conceal themselves, their allies, and other nearby objects, such as their camping gear, from unwanted onlookers by disguising them as trees and other natural objects. This cloaking spell was cast by Runaan who crushed a Moon Opal as its power source.[15] The etymology of the spell derives from the Latin "Mystica", meaning "mystic" or "magic" and "Arbora", meaning "tree". Therefore, the incantation could best be read as "magic-tree", most likely because it disguises the caster and their allies as trees.

Partum Mysterium

A spell cast by Phase Moon Dragons and mages which weaves illusion by harnessing moonlight.[5] The etymology of the spell derives from the Latin "Partum" and "Mysterium", which directly translates to "giving birth to mystery".

Arcanum Antiquis

A spell that whispers a secret into the air and can only be read by other Sky mages. It translates to "ancient secret".[4]

Arcanum Recolligo

A spell that allows someone to search the air for a secret whispered by another Sky mage.[4] The etymology of the spell derives from the Latin "Arcanum" and "Recolligo", which translates to "collect/recover secret".

Aspiro

This spell allows a mage to unleash a strong breath of wind in front of them, pushing people or objects backward. The power of the whirlwind can be controlled by the caster; Claudia used the spell to turn the pages of a book,[18] while Callum used it to temporarily hold off an avalanche,[19] and later as a shield against the volcanic ash breath attack of the Archdragon Rex Igneous.[20] When using the spell, the caster is able to change its direction.[21] The etymology of the spell derives from the Latin "Aspiro", meaning "I breathe/to blow upon" and can be read as "I breathe wind".

Aspiro Frigis

This spell is a variant of "Aspiro" and allows a mage to generate an extremely powerful blast of ice, strong enough to temporarily freeze an enormous entity.[22] The ice explodes forward from where the mage casts it, encasing anything in its way in ice. The etymology of the spell derives from the Latin "Aspiro" (explained above) and "Frigis", which could come from the Latin "Frigus", meaning "cold". Therefore, the incantation could best be read as "I breathe cold wind".

A variant of this spell was cast by Ibis to freeze a target by touching it and cause it to be brittle enough to break apart.[23]

Eritque Arcus Ignus

A spell that causes colorful crystal balls to float and explode into fireworks of multiple shades. It translates to "There shall be a fiery bow".[23]

A spell that allows the user to conjure a devastating lightning bolt. It translates to "deadly lightning".[23]

Fulminis

This spell allows a mage to generate powerful electricity, which can be used as a light source[25] or to unleash bolts of lightning at enemies. The lightning collects in the casters hand and is released when they speak the incantation. However, if the mage only knows the rune and not the incantation, a bolt of lightning will be stuck to their hand. The only way of ending the spell without the incantation is to either toss away the Primal Stone or discharge the electricity in a conductive source like water.[26] The etymology of the spell is derived from the Latin "Fulminis", which could come from the Latin word "Fulmen", meaning "lightning". A variant of this spell was cast by Aaravos to attack multiple targets in one blow.

Lapis Caeli

This spell allows a mage to "vacuum" currents of wind into their mouth, drawing the wind away from a specific target. It was cast by Callum to remove the wind from the sails of an enemy ship.[27] It roughly translates to "sky stone".

Levare Ventum

This spell summons a current of wind strong enough to lift someone into the air. Callum used it to save Rayla from falling into the sea and lift her back onto the ship.[24] It translates to "wind lift".

Manus. Pluma. Volantus.

A advanced spell that can only be cast by a few highly skilled Sky mages. It allows the caster to transform their arms into a pair of bird-like wings, which are referred to as "mage wings"[28] by elves, and use them to fly. This spell uses three different runes, whereas most spells only use a single rune, and unlike other spells, the runes need to be physically printed on each of the mage's arms instead of being drawn in midair. It translates to "Hands. Feathers. Fly.".[9]

A variation of the spell turns only one arm into a wing, suggesting that casters can use their free arm for combat if needed. However, the runes, the incantation, or the extent to which a mage can do this has yet to be revealed.[29]

Nebula Invito

A spell that summons a cloud of dense, gray fog. It translates to "call fog".[4]

It translates to "circle of wind".[33]

Ventus Spiralis

A spell that allows the caster and those around them to breathe in areas with thin air. When cast, the recipient is briefly surrounded by spiraling gust of wind.[34] The name of the spell is derived from the Latin "Ventus" meaning "wind" and either "Spīra" or "Spīrō" (another form of the word being "Spīrātis"), meaning "spiral" or "breathe" respectively. Depending on which word the spell was based on, it could be translated as "spiraling wind" or "we breathe [the] wind".

Deep Magic[]

Infantis Sanguine

A spell that allows a mage to permanently resurrect the dead. However, in the only known instance when this spell would have been used, Viren, the deceased individual, had already been revived temporarily with a dark magic spell, and this spell was simply meant to make the revival permanent. One of the spell's necessary ingredients is the blood of the deceased's child. While it strongly implies that the deceased's biological child is the required sacrifice, a creature bonded to them through a blood ritual also counts. It roughly translates to "blood of a child".[39]

Dark Magic[]

Aaravos's Blood Ritual[]

This ritual was a dark magic process involving Aaravos and Viren, serving the purpose of transporting the elf's caterpillar familiar from inside Aaravos's prison to the outside world, to Viren. First, both Aaravos and Viren gathered a purple cloth, a knife, a spool of golden thread and a sewing needle, a mortar and pestle, a rock, and a chalice containing water. Next, both of them sewed a particular rune into the purple cloth with the golden thread. The rune was unfamiliar to Viren, who himself is a powerful and well-studied mage. Aaravos then drew a glowing purple rune in the air, which transformed into a ball of purple light that he pushed towards his mirror.

The orb of light disappeared when it hit the mirror, while the golden runes sowed into the two purple cloths glow. Aaravos levitated the rock into the air and the cloth encased it, then his cloth unraveled to reveal the rock had broken in half and become a geode, filled with blue crystals. Viren then covered his rock with the cloth and broke the rock in half with the pestle, forming two geode halves. Aaravos and Viren then ground the crystals in the geode and poured the powdered crystals into the water-filled chalices.

The mixture released a purple vapor that flowed into the air. Both of them drunk the potion, which according to Viren, was apparently "surprisingly not terrible".[41] Next, both Aaravos and Viren cut their palm with the knife and bled into their empty mortars. As soon as their blood fell into the mortars, purple flames burned for a second before a swirling red and purple light filled Aaravos's mortar. Aaravos then took a dark purple caterpillar-like creature out of his mouth and it crawled into his mortar. When the creature entered Aaravos's bowl, the red light faded, but at the same time, Viren's mortar glowed red and the creature appeared, lying at the bottom of his mortar.[42]

Trivia[]

  • Ancient Draconic is composed of real-world Latin.
  • Dark magic incantations are composed of specific sentences spoken in reverse.
  • If a mage is attacked before completing a spell, it will be canceled out.[38]
    • Or in other cases, if two mages cast a rune spell at the same time, the faster individual who act first will cause the other mage's spell to miss or be redirected.[24]
  • Some spells are an exception and do not require a rune to be drawn. They instead make use Primal Stones or magic gems. For example, the cast of "Mystica-Arbora" only requires a Moon Opal as a catalyst.
  • Like in the case of Aaravos, Archmages have a high-level mastery of magic and are therefore capable of casting spells without an audible incantation.
  • An unused spell concept was imagining Claudia to form tendrils from her arm during the battle at the Storm Spire, which would have drawn in the dragons attacking Viren's forces.[28]
  • If a dark mage transforms their body, but is injured while in the form, the injury will reflect over once they transformed back, such as when Claudia lost her left leg from the knee down because Rayla severed the equivalent of that when the former had her legs tranformed into Purple Pentapus tentacles.[39]
