Escape from Umber Tor is the thirty-sixth episode of The Dragon Prince. It is the ninth and final chapter of the fourth book, "Earth". The story is succeeded by multiple side stories, such as "Lost Child".
Dark spells, dirty tricks, and a very unusual map ignite a fiery confrontation in Rex Igneous's lair. Janai squares off against her brother.
Plot[]
As Rex Igneous and Team Zym slumbers, Claudia, Terry, and Viren move quietly to find the map the mighty dragon is supposed to possess. In an attempt to wake everyone, Soren shouts loudly, though is muffled by one of Terry's vines in response. When Claudia passes Callum and is asked whether he is a friend, she claims that this is no longer the case. Meanwhile, her father tries to keep the Being from being too noisy as he tries to alarm everyone to the fact that Azymondias had managed to hide away in a pile of gold. While Soren scoots closer to Rayla and tries to wake her, Claudia uses "Lux Revelare" to reveal the map to be kept in Rex Igneous's mouth.
Inside Janai's tent, Kazi approaches her and Amaya to deliver Karim's invitation to the forbidden Royal Blood Duel. At the same time, outside in the settlement, Karim meets with Miyana who prepares herself for her duty of arresting the loser of the duel. Miyana warns him of her concerns, seeing as Janai is an experienced warrior who could defeat him, as well as the potential lack of support by the other Six Horns. This, however, falls on deaf ears. Janai eventually arrives in the arena, where Karim reminds her that she could step aside and live a happy life with Amaya. When she refuses and reminds him that their great-grandmother, Queen Aditi, had abandoned this grotesque tradition, however, Karim puts aside any negotiations and prepares for battle.
After some more minutes of scooting closer toward Rayla, Soren finds himself bitten in the foot by Azymondias. While he first questions the purpose of the bite, he quickly realizes that the smell of his feet is enough to wake Rayla. Once she awakes, she frees Soren, grateful to find him alive. The two move to observe Claudia and Terry, who have discovered that the map is not just kept inside Rex Igneous's mouth, but carved into one of his teeth. While Terry uses the goop from the Being to make an imprint of the map, Rayla approaches Rex Igneous and stabs him to awaken the mighty dragon from his slumber. Infuriated by the betrayal he believes to have endured, Rex Igneous enters a state of rampage, during which the rest of Team Zym awakens from their enforced slumber. While Claudia and Terry flee the scene, Ezran insists that he has to try and soothe Rex Igneous. This is when Viren notices that his relic staff was left behind, all while Rex Igneous releases an attack onto the pleading human king, which is blocked by Callum's "Aspiro". As the group escapes, Rayla makes notice of Viren and decides to follow him, this time with the full approval of Callum.
Janai and Karim enter a fierce battle, which ends with Janai keeping the upper hand and disarming her brother. Karim takes her refusal to kill him as stepping aside and tries to get the Six Horns to take down Janai, though is taken away instead. Janai reminds him once more that she will build a beautiful future for their united nations.
Going unnoticed by Viren and Claudia, Rayla follows their small group and manages to get a hold of Terry, threatening to slit his throat. In response, Claudia makes Rayla aware that she possesses the pouch of coins in which Runaan and her parents are trapped. When Rayla refuses to make a deal with her, Claudia tosses the coins into the boiling lava nearby, forcing Rayla to abandon Terry and try to catch her family. Although she fails to do so, Stella teleports the coins into her hands just in time. However, they turn out to have been an illusion, causing Rayla to burst into tears and to cry out in agony. Feeling for her, Terry calls Claudia out on her cruelty, leading to her tossing the real coins over to Rayla, who happily clutches them in her hands.
As the cave collapses, the rest of Team Zym finds themselves reaching the blocked entrance to Rex Igneous's lair. Although a path opens through the rubble, they at first do not manage to open the Great Gates, only managing to do so after Bait joins in to help them. Once outside, they think themselves save, when Rex Igneous suddenly bursts through the gates. To their luck, Zubeia descends from the sky and intimidates Rex Igneous enough to retreat into his lair. Zubeia proceeds to scold Azymondias for sneaking out, though she accepts the compromise that, without him sneaking away, she would have not been able to come to the rescue. When Callum finds one of Rayla's blades that Rex Igneous had spit out, he briefly believes her to have perished. Luckily, she turns up shortly after and the two share an overdue hug.
Finally outside the mountain, Claudia is overjoyed to have a copy of the map in her possession. However, she quickly has to realize that Viren's body has been taken over by Aaravos.
