History[]
At an unknown point, Elmer came to live in Scumport and became the bodyguard of Finnegrin who gave him the moniker "Deadwood".[1]
Second Saga[]
Elmer was guarding the door to Finnegrin's office when Team Zym came to ask the Tidebound Elf for a ship to the Sea of the Castout.[2] Elmer joined the crew of Sea Legs in pursuing and capturing Team Zym after they stole the baby Glow Toads that were in Finnegrin's possession.[3] Elmer followed through with Finnegrin's orders of torturing and beating Callum before Soren told him to not be a mindless brute who would blindly obey his cruel boss. This inspired Elmer to turn against Finnegrin before feeding him to a leviathan and releasing Team Zym from their bonds.[4]
Elmer was among the crowd that celebrated the construction of the city of Evrkynd.[5]
Chasing Shadows - Part Two[]
Elmer is watching a fight between the Sunfire Elf Darys and the Skywing Elf Feathers in the Leviathan's Bones. After Darys defeated Feathers, he challenges Finnegrin to face him for the next round. However, Finnegrin chooses Elmer to fight on his behalf and the latter effortlessly beats Darys into a bloody pulp.
Book Five - Ocean[]
Bait & Switch[]
Elmer is guarding the door to Finnegrin's office when he tells Callum, Ezran, and Bait that no one sees his boss unannounced despite their insistence. However, Elmer then allows Ezran and Bait to enter when he realizes the Glow Toad's value and reveals the combination of keys required to open the door. He then tells Callum that they are not friends.
Later on, Elmer informs Finnegrin that a wealthy merchant intends to do important business in Scumport, and that merchant turns out to be Soren disguising himself as "Smort Longpocket". Elmer accompanies Finnegrin and Soren to the marketplace before they realize that someone is intending to break into the office. When Finnegrin learns that his keys have been stolen, Elmer knocks the door down before they discover that Team Zym had stolen the three baby Glow Toads that were being kept in the office.
Sea Legs[]
Elmer is aboard Sea Legs as he, Finnegrin, and the rest of the ship's crew pursue The Ruthless. The Ruthless is eventually destroyed after a lengthy chase, and Finnegrin orders Elmer and the rest of his crew to bring Callum to his cabin and to imprison the rest of Team Zym in the brig.
Finnegrin's Wake[]
Elmer obeys Finnegrin in torturing Callum with a pair of Sea Anemones after the latter refused to perform dark magic. Elmer then holds Rayla down when she tried to save Callum before he is surprised by Team Zym's willingness to lose a hand and when an infuriated Callum punches Finnegrin in the face after the latter tortured Rayla with "Venus Frigoris". Elmer then brings Callum back to Finnegrin's cabin as the Tidebound Elf prepares a new plan.
Elmer and Finnegrin are about to feed Rayla to a leviathan that they lured in when Callum frees himself from his bonds and rescues her. After Callum forged a connection with the Ocean arcanum, Finnegrin commands Elmer in beating the mage up. Soren then approaches Elmer and tells him that he does not have to do anything that Finnegrin says after being called worthless and given insulting nicknames. However, Elmer chooses to hit Soren when Finnegrin tells him to. Elmer asks Soren why he keeps on getting up, and Soren says that he knows what Elmer is feeling due to his past experiences with Viren. When Soren tells Elmer that he does not have to be cruel like Finnegrin, Elmer is finally fed up with Tidebound Elf constantly calling him "Deadwood" and lifts his former boss off the deck of Sea Legs. Upon revealing his true name, Elmer tosses Finnegrin to the leviathan's mouth. Elmer then helps in freeing Team Zym from their bonds and smiles proudly when Soren boasts his courage to Nyx.
