Death Alive is the fifty-fifth episode of The Dragon Prince. It is the first chapter of the seventh book, "Dark".

Atop the Star Scraper, Kosmo receives an ominous prophecy about the fate of Xadia. As Callum returns to a devastated Katolis, Aaravos hatches a new plot.

Plot[]

Kosmo is having a vision about an Eternal Night in the Starlooms as the curious Astrid wakes him up from his trance. Astrid grows worried when Kosmo reveals that Aaravos has been freed from his prison and that no one else is aware of it.

At the Valley of the Graves, Aaravos proudly proclaims to Claudia and Terry that all the dragons and elves are too blinded by their self-righteousness to learn about his liberation, and that when they stand high, they will fall hard.

Ethari is crafting weapons in his workshop in the Silvergrove when he is informed that Runaan's metal lotus is floating on the lotus pool's surface. The heartbroken Ethari dismisses the floating lotus with the assumption of its enchantment weakening after two years, believing that Runaan has truly died.

At the Moon Nexus, Runaan insists that he must return to Ethari, but Rayla, Lujanne, and Allen encourage him to be patient and to rest since he has been trapped inside an enchanted coin for two years and is not in the best condition to travel. Rayla then leaves Runaan's room to find Callum pacing anxiously, and she tells the latter to return to Katolis without her. Callum reveals that he is also worried about being separated from Rayla again. The two kiss as Rayla promises Callum that she and Stella will catch up with him and Sneezles as soon as Runaan recovers. Callum then casts "Manus. Pluma. Volantus." and starts flying to Katolis alongside Sneezles.

Terry attempts to convince Aaravos that the latter can go on his way since Claudia have fulfilled her promise of freeing him. Aaravos states that while he owes Terry nothing, he owes Claudia his eternal gratitude before removing the corrupted Sun Primal Stone from the Sun staff and embedding it into the relic staff. Claudia asks Aaravos if he can bring Viren back again like last time. Aaravos explains that the last time Viren was resurrected, they preserved his body in a "nebula chrysalis", and that it is too late to do it again. But then Aaravos reveals that when certain individuals die with great trauma and with unfinished business, their spirits can become caught in the In-Between, a plane between life and death. Aaravos tells Claudia that it is possible that her father is currently in the In-Between. Terry calls Aaravos out for getting Claudia's hopes up shortly after her father just died, but Aaravos says that he is merely answering her question. Terry then tries to persuade Claudia that Viren was a changed man who found peace and his truth when he chose to renounce dark magic, and that they must grieve and let him pass on. However, Claudia wants to make sure if her father is caught in the In-Between as Aaravos gives her the relic staff.

Callum and Sneezles arrive in the burning ruins of Katolis, and the horrified Callum cries as he finds the castle completely destroyed. They soon reunite with Soren, who is saddened of his inability to protect Katolis and Viren, who gave his life to save everyone. Soren immediately breaks down into tears as Callum hugs him.

Aaravos explains to Claudia and Terry that the In-Between can be entered through the Moon Nexus. And that while there are ways to create a portal in, getting a lost spirit out is a more complicated process that requires a Moon Primal Stone, which can be created through an exceedingly rare ingredient found only in the Garden of Innocence, a place where unicorns once roamed. Claudia realizes that she has been to the Garden of Innocence before as a child by using a magical map that she kept in the Puzzle House, the former home of Viren's old mentor, Kpp'Ar. Aaravos agrees to join Claudia in finding the map so they can begin their quest of inverting the Moon Nexus.

Callum, Soren, and Sneezles are sitting in the ruins of the castle when Zym, Ezran, Bait, Aanya, Corvus, Embertail, and Aegis arrive. Callum hugs Ezran while Soren hugs Corvus as they all reunite.

Astrid and Kosmo are at the Star Scraper's Rotunda as they alert the Elder about Aaravos's return. When Astrid asks the Elder to help Team Zym, the latter refuses since the heavens are willing to reveal their secrets to the Celestial Elves in exchange for a sacred promise not to interfere with the affairs of the world. In response, the infuriated Astrid storms off, declaring that she had never made such a promise.

Team Zym sit silently at the ruins of the castle before Soren retrieves the burned throne of Katolis and tries to stay positive. Ezran has a vision of his parents, Harrow and Sarai, at the throne room, and decides to sit on the burned throne. Aanya then asks the group about who is responsible for the destruction of Katolis. Soren says that Katolis was burned down by a gigantic golden dragon, and Callum immediately deduces the attacker as Sol Regem, an Archdragon of the Sun and the former King of the Dragons who was blinded by rage, bitterness, and hatred for humans. Ezran angrily declares that they must find and destroy Sol Regem as he walks down from his throne. Soren says that the Archdragon had been sighted landing in the Valley of the Graves before advising the angered Ezran to not rush into danger. Corvus offers to head for the Valley of the Graves, prompting Ezran to command Callum to go as well. Callum and Corvus then mount Embertail and Aegis as they fly off to the Valley of the Graves. Aanya consoles the grieving Ezran by lending her support as he leads his kingdom back to safety and hope. Ezran thanks Aanya before returning to his throne.

Aaravos tells Claudia and Terry that he must shrink and take a more inconspicuous form to become inconspicuous and to prevent an Archdragon from biting and sending him back to the heavens. He then disguises himself as an island before standing in front of Claudia and Terry. Aaravos believes that his normal Startouch Elf form is too dazzling and gives different comments on his alternative elven disguises: Skywing Elf for having fabulous feathers, Moonshadow Elf for being so dark and brooding, Tidebound Elf for having a certain nautical panache, Sunfire Elf for being always hot, and Earthblood Elf for Claudia's relationship with Terry.

Runaan attempts to leave the Moon Nexus when Rayla and Stella arrives with a bowl of grubs. Runaan reminds Rayla that he promised to return to Ethari and will not keep him waiting one minute longer. Rayla agrees and tells Runaan to at least eat something before they can begin their journey before handing him the grub bowl. Rayla offers to have Lujanne use an illusion spell to disguise the grubs into his favorite food, but Runaan chooses to eat the grubs as they are. Rayla then tells Runaan that she promised to meet with Callum in Katolis. Runaan is about to disagree but decides to give in and continue eating the grubs.

The sun sets on the Valley of the Graves as Callum and Corvus discover Sol Regem's skeleton, confirming that he has died. Corvus then notices the new island in the valley, but Callum believes that the island has always been there. They then see a man with a staff trapped under one of Sol Regem's bones and help him up, unaware that he is actually a disguised Aaravos. Aaravos thanks Callum before claiming that he came to see the Archdragon who killed his daughter Leola. Callum offers his condolences and desire to help, and Aaravos politely refuses before offering Callum an apple. Noticing that Callum never mentioned his name, Corvus pulls the young mage away before questioning the disguised Aaravos. Aaravos says that everyone knows Callum's name due to his status as the High Mage of Katolis. Corvus tells Aaravos to keep the apple, prompting Aaravos to leave and drop the apple, which starts to rot.

Callum and Corvus return to Ezran and report Sol Regem's death. Ezran announces that they will camp in the ruins for the night before journeying to the Banther Lodge the next day to start rebuilding their lives.

Later in the evening, Rayla, Stella, and Runaan arrive at Katolis. Rayla and Stella reunite with the rest of Team Zym before Ezran furiously recognizes Runaan as the elf who killed his father. Callum and Rayla attempt to calm Ezran down, though Runaan confesses that he indeed killed Harrow. Ezran then commands Soren to arrest Runaan.

At the Star Scraper's Zenith, Astrid is standing on the Star Scraper's Zenith as Kosmo catches up with her. She sarcastically asks him if he already knows of her intention since he knows everything, but he corrects that it is not how being Timeblind works. Astrid reveals to Kosmo that she is leaving to make a difference and help Team Zym before removing her blindfold. The intense sunlight nearly overwhelms her, though Kosmo helps her back on her feet. Astrid is about to fly off when Kosmo decides to tell her everything he saw.
