Changing of the Guard is a side story published through the official website of The Dragon Prince. It revolves around Soren and Corvus as they chat about life, lunges, and what happens next. It is part of a short story series called "Reflections".[1]
Summary[]

Soren challenges Corvus to a race to the rampart as part of a series of challenges he had proposed to Corvus over several weeks. These challenges included but are not limited to: pushups, sparring, races, weightlifting, and even King Ezran's "Belly Full of Jelly" tart-eating contest, though usually go without any explanation as to what the challenge looks like. Despite growing a little tired of participating in these challenges, Corvus follows Soren up to the tower to the castle walls, where he receives comments about his lack of speed, despite having trained for endurance. Up on the walls, Soren voices how it is his favorite place in the castle, a statement he made often.

When Soren begins to do lunges, Corvus realizes that he has noticed his inability to sit still if something is bothering him. Excited, Soren compliments the colors of autumn and how naturally seemed to plan how well the colors went with those of Katolis, causing Corvus to remember the forests he grew up in and how much he loves the season himself. This reminds Soren that Corvus grew up in the forest and offers to show him an interesting tree, though Corvus interrupts by saying that he remembers how often he slept under the trees despite the bed provided to him by Amaya. Soren asks if Corvus likes the castle, though the latter admits that he has not quite yet grown used to it. When Soren lists all of the reasons as to why he should like the castle, he is asked if something is on his mind, and he eventually reveals that he would like for Corvus to join the Crownguard. He insists on how much Ezran likes Corvus and would be happy for him to join, unable to admit that it would matter to him as well. Corvus realizes then that Soren was still hurting from what had happened at the Storm Spire,[2] and that he never asked him how he felt about the fate of Viren or Claudia. Knowing it will cheer him up, Corvus agrees to join the Crownguard and Soren promises him a set of custom armor.
Trivia[]
- The story, alongside "Through the Moon", shows that Soren has temporarily shaved the beard he had grown during "Book Three: Sun", seemingly having decided at a later point to regrow the prominent beard he sports in "Book Four: Earth".
