The Celestial Elves

The Celestial Elves are an ancient sect of Skywing Elves at the Star Scraper who commune and seek enlightenment with the Star Primal. They were the guardians of the Nova Blade and the Corona of the Heavens.[1]

Information[]

From the moment they are born, every Celestial Elf wears a blindfold, so that no light from the Sun or the Moon can enter their eyes. They only remove their blindfolds on a clear moonless night, so the only light they ever see is pure starlight. When they gaze upon the heavens at that moment, some might unlock the ultimate connection to the cosmos, achieving enlightenment and becoming "Timeblind". The Timeblind sees the past, present, and future fluidly, as one.[1] According to Kosmo, seeing the future is not really a prophecy, but a reality that has not come to pass yet.[2]

The Celestial Elves are observers and it is against their culture to interfere with the affairs of the world. According to the Elder, the heavens are willing to reveal their secrets in exchange for a sacred promise not to interfere.[2]

The Celestial Elves tend to use bells to announce news and arrivals and celebrate certain moments.[1][3]

The Celestial Elves have a practice called the "Star-Truth ritual", which requires all of one's strength and courage. When someone uses dark magic, it creates a dark hole in their spirit, a corrupted emptiness. The Star-Truth ritual is a means to purge the darkness and fill that hole with light. The individual must first be bitten by a Starweaver Spider, to receive an injection of its venom. Drinking the venom would work just as well, and for fairly obvious reasons is arguably a more pleasant experience. The venom is harmless, but it makes the recipients' spirit more vulnerable and receptive to the power of the Stars. The individual undergoing the ritual must then fly up as high as they possibly can, to get a close to the stars as possible. They wear a blindfold as they fly up, because they are not supposed to be looking outward toward the cosmos but inward towards their very being. The goal is to find their "inner star", which is a deep truth that shines so bright, it eliminates the darkness within them. Once the ritual has been done, the individual must never use dark magic again, or else it will corrupt and overwhelm them.[4]

History[]

The Celestial Elves were formed at the Star Scraper before or after Luna Tenebris became the new Queen of the Dragons.[1]

After the death of Luna Tenebris, the Ice Behemoth she kept as a pet, Esmeray, began to wander the frozen north. She missed Luna most on moonless nights, which resulted in her creating terrible blizzards near the Star Scraper. Because of this, the Celestial Elves were unable to remove their blindfolds and see the starlight, and none of them could become Timeblind. After 300 years, the Elder, the current leader of the Celestial Elves, was the only living member who had ever seen the stars, back when he was a child.[1][3]

It was prophesied that one day, the Chosen Two, a human mage and an elven warrior, would come to pierce the heart of the beast and melt away the threat.[1] Callum and Rayla turned out to be the Chosen Two, even though the duo feigned being them to obtain the Corona of the Heavens and the Nova Blade to defeat Aaravos.[3] However, the Celestial Elves gave the Nova Blade to the Orphan Queen centuries ago[1] in attempt to defeat Aaravos.[5]

After Esmeray was pacified, the Celestial Elves experienced starlight for the first time in 300 years. During this time, Kosmo became Timeblind and saw the "Star" of his sister Astrid, Rayla, and Callum. However, he passed out upon seeing Callum, as the human had used dark magic in the past.[3]

Even though Callum and Rayla failed to find a way to kill Aaravos, they did succeed in bringing the prison to the other side of the world, to the middle of a treacherous frozen wasteland, to the top of a tower above the clouds, guarded by a sect of elite Skywing Elves with the power to see the future. They decided the best course of action would be to leave the prison there and have the Celestial Elves watch over it. Kosmo had a vision of a possible future in which he revealed that the prison was actually the fake candy decoy Barius made. After seeing the consequences of this path and receiving some advice from Astrid, Kosmo ended the vision and hid the truth from Callum so the young mage's spirit would not fall into despair. Kosmo and Astrid then led Callum in the Star-Truth ritual to neutralize the dark magic he used in the past.[4] The Celestial Elves then ate the decoy prison after Callum and Rayla left the Star Scraper.[6]

Trivia[]

  • When Kosmo became Timeblind, he described reality as "Worlds one and myriad. All of us nothing, and all of us infinite."[3]
  • In the series, Kosmo's Timeblindness vision was depicted with everyone and everything in monochrome, except for Kosmo himself.[4]
    • Notably, becoming enlightened did not make Kosmo any wiser. In his vision, he saw himself making a mistake that made Callum lose all confidence. According to Astrid, "you may be enlightened now, but you're still my dumb brother." He only learned from experience after the vision was complete.[4]
    • After coming out of his vision, Kosmo still remembered his sister's words of wisdom, even though she never said them in the subsequent alternate reality he created by taking a different path.[4]
