The episode opens at a forest clearing at night. Rayla sits on a rock while the princes sleep nearby. She tries loosening the silver band on her left wrist, then bites it, and tries yanking it free.
Rayla Unbind yourself! Unbind... thyself. Unbindo!
Throwing her head back, Rayla glances aside and notices Bait watching her.
Rayla Don't judge me. So what, I'm talking to my ribbon-thing? How is that any worse than talking to a... whatever it is you are?
Bait turns pink. Rayla narrows her eyes and glares at the Glow Toad, who stares back. Bait sticks his tongue out and licks his eye. Rayla turns away with a disgusted expression, sitting with her back to Ezran and Callum. She looks at the castle looming in the distance and shifts her remorseful gaze to the sleeping brothers for a moment, then turns away and hangs her head.
Scene Change
Viren leads a funeral procession across the castle bridge. Four soldiers carry a shrouded casket with several roses laid atop of it. Priestesses clad in red and white cloaks walk beside the casket with ornate torches. A distant view shows a torch lit winding path, leading out of the castle and through the neighboring town. In the town, the citizens line the streets as the procession goes by. Their heads bow with sorrowful expressions. An impassive Viren leads the slow march with a priestess wearing a silver circlet walking behind him, she frowns at the mage.
Opeli A funeral so soon is madness. It is tradition to mourn fallen kings for seven sunsets. You're not even given him one.
Viren I understand your concern, Opeli, but in a time of war, we must move forward.
Light from numerous torches pierces the dense fog as people make their way down the winding path. Entering a desolate canyon, the head of the procession passes between two colossal statues of knights. Bringing up the rear with Claudia, Soren struggles to keep his eyes open.
Soren [Yawns]
Claudia [Whispers] Hey, keep your head up.
Soren Ugh, sorry. [He stretches] Long night.
Claudia [Pulls out a flask and pours a drink into its cap] Drink this. I call it "hot brown morning potion."
Soren studies the steaming liquid, sniffs it, then takes a long gulp. He shakes his head energetically.
Soren [Laughs] That's good!
Statues of regal men and women line the tall cliff faces around them. Up ahead, the casket bearers approach a stone altar, a short bell tower, and a few statues behind it. The townspeople watch the soldiers set the casket down on the altar. Opeli stands by while Viren faces the crowd.
Viren Today we woke to a devastating truth. Our king has been taken from us.
The crowd gasps.
Viren Slain by the forces of Xadia, vile Moonshadow Elves.
A boy closes his eyes and hugs his mother.
Viren To me, he was more than a king. In his final hours, Harrow called me... his brother.
Opeli Wait.
Viren glances toward Opeli.
Opeli Where are the princes? They need to be here.
Viren [He turns to the crowd] The princes... are dead.
The crowd exclaims.
Viren We cannot let Xadia's cruelty go unanswered. We must move forward with strength. Light the pyre.
Opeli [She looks at the shrouded casket] No.
Opeli swings her torch, blowing its flame out, each standing by a Bridger. The four kther priestesses extinguish their torches as well.
Viren [Sighs] Claudia.
Claudia steps forward, holding a small glass jar with a spider in it. She uncorks the jar, freeing the black spider with a fiery red abdomen. It scurries under her palm and she crushes it with her fist. Orange and yellow goo bursts through her fingers.
Claudia [Chanting] Semalf gnippiks gnipael. (Leaping skipping flames.)
The goo turns into flames. Claudia's eyes glow purple and then turn black. She shoots for the fiery comet that lands in abrasure and sets it ablaze. The fire then leaps into the three other braziers before swirling into the air above the altar and crashing down on the casket. The villagers stare wide eyed at the roaring fire. They gasp.
Viren When a ruler of Katolis dies, we mourn for seven days. But we are at war. Today, we must mourn sevenfold... for tonight, there will be a coronation.
Glowing embers float up the thick black clouds of smoke, rising from the burning casket. The clouds turn dark blue and lightning flashes through them.
Scene Change
Callum peers into the Primal Stone in his hand while sketching it in his book. Rayla walks up.
Rayla Callum. Callum. Hey! That's your name, right? Callum? Clem? Or was it Camel?
Callum Uh, it's Callum. I guess I was just distracted trying to draw this... prima-ball.
Rayla Primal Stone.
Callum Right. It holds the pure essence of a primal spirit inside.
Rayla [Sighs] Primal Source?
Callum Right.
Rayla You do know what the Six Primal Sources are?
Callum Uh, if I say yes, are you gonna make me name them?
Rayla Ugh. [She holds out her hand and Callum gives her the book] All the magic in the world comes from the Primal Sources. They're the original and purest forms of magical energy. The Sun, the Moon, the Stars, the Earth, the Ocean, and... [Taps the stone]
Callum The Sky.
Rayla Yes. To cast a spell, a mage needs Primal Energy. So that wind breath spell you just did? You'd usually need a storm or at least a strong breeze. But with that stone, you have all the power of the Sky, any time.
Callum Wow.
Rayla Primal Stones are incredibly rare. They've been sought after by the most powerful arch-mages in history. And now, somehow you have one.
Callum studies Rayla's sketched runes of the Primal Sources.
Callum Wait... I've seen these before. At the Banther Lodge. There was this little cube thing and it had these exact symbols on it.
Rayla Uh, neat.
Callum What if it's magic? We have to go get it.
Rayla Wait, what? We have real problems to worry about. Ending the war. Taking the dragon egg to Xadia. Remember?
Callum Xadia's to the east, right? So is the lodge. It's on the way.
Rayla Oh, great. I'm sure it won't be calling with humans. Humans that are looking for you and want to kill me! Yay!
Callum No, it's the winter lodge. It's been empty for months. Trust me.
Rayla looks away.
Callum [Sighs] Look... Rayla. [Lowers his head] Princes are supposed to be good at things. Uh, sword fighting, leadership... riding horses. But I've always been kind of bad at it, well, everything. So, when I tried that spell, I was sure I'd end up on fire or covered in spiders.. but it worked.
Rayla's expression softens.
Callum And then you called me a mage, and that felt... right. I... I just have this feeling that cube thing could help me.
Ezran sits up and rubs his eyes.
Ezran Callum? [Yawns] I had a weird dream.
Callum It wasn't a dream, Ez. All of that was real.
Ezran Are you sure? There was this giant pink hippopotamus and I pulled its ear off. Because it was made of taffy.
Callum Uh... no. That... that was a dream. I thought you meant the elves, the smoke wolves, the dragon egg. That was all real.
Ezran Then I tried to thank the hippo for the taffy, but he couldn't hear me, because I was eating his ears.
Rayla Hey, sad prince. [Callum turns to her. She sighs] Let's go get your cube.
Callum Really?
Rayla Yes. Just please, no more detours, all right? Or heartfelt speeches.
Ezran shoulders his bag and lifts the dragon egg.
Fades to credits.
