History[]
Berto was born inside the Human Kingdoms at an unknown point. He was eventually adopted by the human sailor Villads and became his first mate on The Ruthless.[1]
First Saga[]
In their journey to Xadia, Team Zym hired Villads and Berto to help them cross a vast lake. During their voyage, Berto would occasionally humor Team Zym with his macabre sense of humor.[1] After one full day of sailing,[2] Team Zym eventually saw the shoreline in the distance just as they noticed Pyrrah's shadow flying overhead.[3]
Second Saga[]
Two years after the battle at the Storm Spire, Berto accompanied Villads in expanding their trade across Xadia. The pair eventually met the winged Skywing Elf Nyx at Scumport who joined them on The Ruthless,[4] although she and Villads tend to bicker on who was the real captain of the ship.[5] Berto reunited with Team Zym when they visited Scumport and agreed to help them sail to the Sea of the Castout to prevent the liberation of Aaravos after he helped them in rescuing three baby Glow Toads from Finnegrin.[4] After The Ruthless got shipwrecked during their escape from Sea Legs, Berto got captured alongside the rest of Team Zym.[5] Berto was hidden underneath Villads's hat until Soren convinced Elmer to turn against Finnegrin. Once Berto regained his freedom, he witnessed Villads becoming the new captain of Sea Legs just as the ship entered the Sea of the Castout.[6]
Berto was among the crowd that celebrated the construction of the city of Evrkynd.[7]
Book Two - Sky[]
Voyage of the Ruthless[]
Berto is perched on Villads's right shoulder when they introduce themselves to Team Zym and when they are sailing through the lake on the The Ruthless. When Villads's hat is thrown overboard, Berto swoops in to retrieve it. He also tells Villads to wake up when he falls into his narcolepsy.
As a storm begins to rage above The Ruthless, Berto jokes that it is Callum's chance to die and learn how to drown. He then tells Villads to drop the sail and to steer the ship from a cluster of rocks before docking the ship on a nearby island. Villads and Berto then go below deck and wait for the weather to subside.
Breaking the Seal[]
Berto remains by Villads's side when he proclaims to Team Zym that he manages to smell the faint and distant scent of land that will grow stronger after a full day of sailing.
Heart of a Titan[]
Berto flies around the The Ruthless as Callum reads the letter Harrow has given him. He briefly perches on the steering wheel until Villads swings down from the mast before listening to the heart-to-heart talk with Rayla. When Villads falls to his narcolepsy again, Berto promises to tell him the compliment from Rayla. Berto perches on the steering wheel again when land is in sight as the Fire Dragon Pyrrah soars through the clouds.
The Book of Destiny[]
Berto and Villads appear to Callum inside a dark magic-induced fever dream. Berto flies above and around the ship while confessing that he has questions about Callum temporarily becoming the sail of the ship. Berto then grows to a gigantic size and carries Villads out from the dream.
Book Five - Ocean[]
Bait & Switch[]
Berto and Villads reunite with Team Zym at Scumport. Berto jokes to Team Zym about Villads expanding his trade in Xadia for "mostly legal" business before helping them in sailing to the Sea of the Castout. They are also joined by Villads's new first mate: the winged Skywing Elf Nyx.
Sea Legs[]
As The Ruthless sails to the Sea of the Castout, Callum inadvertently sends Berto flying when he demonstrates his ability to cast "Aspiro" to Nyx. Later on, Team Zym realizes that they are being pursued by Finnegrin and his ship, Sea Legs. Berto does his best helping Villads in navigating The Ruthless, but the sight of Sea Legs revealing itself as a Giant Hermit Crab paralyzes him with fear. Without Berto's aid, Villads unintentionally wrecks The Ruthless onto a large rock, allowing Finnegrin and his crew to capture Team Zym.
Finnegrin's Wake[]
Berto hides underneath Villads's hat as Finnegrin holds Team Zym captive. It is only after Elmer turned against and killed Finnegrin that Villads allows Berto to regain his freedom. Berto then helps Villads in pointing his finger at Nyx after she returned to Sea Legs in the wake of Finnegrin's death.
Book Seven - Dark[]
Nova[]
Berto is among the crowd that witnesses the announcement of Evrkynd, a city where people of all races can live in harmony. When Amaya and Gren reveal that everyone is in charge of the city, Berto jokingly squawks about it being a bad idea.References[]
